Abstract

In this work we investigate the quench dynamics in the Kondo model on the Toulouse line in the presence of a local magnetic field. It is shown that this setup can be realized by either applying the local magnetic field directly or by preparing the system in a macroscopically spin-polarized initial state. In the latter case, the magnetic field results from a subtlety in applying the bosonization technique where terms that are usually referred to as finite-size corrections become important in the present non-equilibrium setting. The transient dynamics are studied by analyzing exact analytical results for the local spin dynamics. The timescale for the relaxation of the local dynamical quantities turns out to be exclusively determined by the Kondo scale. In the transient regime, one observes damped oscillations in the local correlation functions with a frequency set by the magnetic field.

Periodically driven Kondo impurity in nonequilibrium steady states

Koudai Iwahori, Norio Kawakami

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of a periodically driven anisotropic Kondo impurity model. The periodic time dependence is introduced for a local magnetic field which couples to the impurity spin and also for an in-plane exchange interaction. We obtain the exact results on the time evolution for arbitrary periodic time dependence at the special point in the parameter space known as the Toulouse limit. We first consider a specific case where the local magnetic field is periodically switched on and off. When the driving period is much shorter than the inverse of the Kondo temperature, an intriguing oscillating behavior (resonance phenomenon) emerges in the time average of the impurity spin polarization with increasing the local magnetic field intensity. By taking the high-frequency limit of the external driving, we elucidate that the system recovers the translational invariance in time and can be described by a mixture of the zero-temperature and infinite-temperature properties. In certain cases, the system is governed by either zero-temperature or infinite-temperature properties and, therefore, can be properly described by the corresponding equilibrium state.

Nonequilibrium steady state in a periodically driven Kondo model

Markus Heyl, Stefan K. Kehrein

We investigate the Kondo model with time-dependent couplings that are periodically switched on and off. On the Toulouse line we derive exact analytical results for the spin dynamics in the steady state that builds up after an infinite number of switching periods. Remarkably, the universal long-time behavior of the spin-spin correlation function remains completely unaffected by the driving. In the limit of slow driving the dynamics becomes equivalent to that of a single interaction quench. In the limit of fast driving it is shown that the steady state cannot be described by some effective equilibrium Hamiltonian due to the observation that an incautious implementation of the Trotter formula is not correct. As a consequence, the steady state in the limit of fast switching serves as an example for the emergence of new quantum states not accessible in equilibrium.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics of a Periodically-driven Impurity Spin Coupled to the Bath of Ultracold Fermions by Kondo Coupling

Koudai Iwahori, Norio Kawakami

The dynamics of the anisotropic Kondo model under the periodic driving is studied. The periodic driving we consider is the local magnetic field which couples with the impurity spin and the in-plane exchange interaction. At the special point in the parameter space (Toulouse limit), the anisotropic Kondo model can be transformed to the non-interacting resonant level model and thereby the exact results for arbitrary external fields can be obtained. It is shown that characteristic behavior of the dynamics changes with the field intensity, the field frequency, and the Kondo temperature. When the local magnetic field intensity is very large compared with the field frequency and the Kondo temperature, the time dependence of the impurity spin and the spin density of the fermionic bath shows an oscillation whose period is inversely proportional to the field intensity. We also find that another time scale, which is given by the inverse of the Kondo temperature, governs the response of the system to the external field.

Nonequilibrium magnetization dynamics of ferromagnetically coupled Kondo spins

Andreas Hackl, Matthias Vojta C, Stefan K. Kehrein

An analytical description of nonequilibrium phenomena in interacting quantum systems is rarely possible. Here we present one example where such a description can be achieved, namely, the ferromagnetic Kondo model. In equilibrium, this model is tractable via perturbative renormalization-group techniques. We employ a recently developed extension of the flow-equation method to calculate the nonequilibrium decay of the local magnetization at zero temperature. The flow equations admit analytical solutions which become exact at short and long times, in the latter case revealing that the system always retains a memory of its initial state.

Quantum quench for the biaxial spin system

Andrei A. Zvyagin

Dynamical non-equilibrium effects after a quantum quench in a quantum spin system, which permits exact analytical solution in both closed and open cases, are studied. The exact analytic results are obtained for the bi-axial paramagnet, both for the “easy axis”- and the “easy-plane”-like situations, and for the field directed along both principal axes of the system. Quantum quench of the external magnetic field produces a nonlinear response. For the closed system the average magnetic moment oscillates with time and with the final value of the external field. Such oscillations exist also for the open system, connected to the bath, in the dynamical regime. For the steady-state regime in the open case the oscillations are damped. Non-equilibrium effects yield specific hysteresis phenomena in the considered single spin system.

Dynamical correlations in the spin-half two-channel Kondo model

Anna I. Tóth, Gergely Zaránd

Dynamical correlations of various local operators are studied in the spin-half two-channel Kondo (2CK) model in the presence of channel anisotropy or external magnetic field. A conformal field theory--based scaling approach is used to predict the analytic properties of various spectral functions in the vicinity of the two-channel Kondo fixed point. These analytical results compare well with highly accurate density-matrix numerical renormalization-group results. The universal crossover functions interpolating between channel-anisotropy- or magnetic-field-induced Fermi-liquid regimes and the two-channel Kondo, non-Fermi-liquid regimes are determined numerically. The boundaries of the real 2CK scaling regime are found to be rather restricted and to depend both on the type of the perturbation and on the specific operator whose correlation function is studied. In a small magnetic field, a universal resonance is observed in the local fermion's spectral function. The dominant superconducting instability appears in the composite superconducting channel.
