Nonequilibrium Dynamics of a Periodically-driven Impurity Spin Coupled to the Bath of Ultracold Fermions by Kondo Coupling

Abstract

The dynamics of the anisotropic Kondo model under the periodic driving is studied. The periodic driving we consider is the local magnetic field which couples with the impurity spin and the in-plane exchange interaction. At the special point in the parameter space (Toulouse limit), the anisotropic Kondo model can be transformed to the non-interacting resonant level model and thereby the exact results for arbitrary external fields can be obtained. It is shown that characteristic behavior of the dynamics changes with the field intensity, the field frequency, and the Kondo temperature. When the local magnetic field intensity is very large compared with the field frequency and the Kondo temperature, the time dependence of the impurity spin and the spin density of the fermionic bath shows an oscillation whose period is inversely proportional to the field intensity. We also find that another time scale, which is given by the inverse of the Kondo temperature, governs the response of the system to the external field.

Periodically driven Kondo impurity in nonequilibrium steady states

Koudai Iwahori, Norio Kawakami

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of a periodically driven anisotropic Kondo impurity model. The periodic time dependence is introduced for a local magnetic field which couples to the impurity spin and also for an in-plane exchange interaction. We obtain the exact results on the time evolution for arbitrary periodic time dependence at the special point in the parameter space known as the Toulouse limit. We first consider a specific case where the local magnetic field is periodically switched on and off. When the driving period is much shorter than the inverse of the Kondo temperature, an intriguing oscillating behavior (resonance phenomenon) emerges in the time average of the impurity spin polarization with increasing the local magnetic field intensity. By taking the high-frequency limit of the external driving, we elucidate that the system recovers the translational invariance in time and can be described by a mixture of the zero-temperature and infinite-temperature properties. In certain cases, the system is governed by either zero-temperature or infinite-temperature properties and, therefore, can be properly described by the corresponding equilibrium state.

Nonequilibrium steady state in a periodically driven Kondo model

Markus Heyl, Stefan K. Kehrein

We investigate the Kondo model with time-dependent couplings that are periodically switched on and off. On the Toulouse line we derive exact analytical results for the spin dynamics in the steady state that builds up after an infinite number of switching periods. Remarkably, the universal long-time behavior of the spin-spin correlation function remains completely unaffected by the driving. In the limit of slow driving the dynamics becomes equivalent to that of a single interaction quench. In the limit of fast driving it is shown that the steady state cannot be described by some effective equilibrium Hamiltonian due to the observation that an incautious implementation of the Trotter formula is not correct. As a consequence, the steady state in the limit of fast switching serves as an example for the emergence of new quantum states not accessible in equilibrium.

Two-channel Kondo physics in a periodically driven single-impurity Anderson model

Martin Eckstein, Philipp Werner

We investigate a quantum dot (Anderson impurity) coupled to metallic leads, with a time-periodic voltage bias across the device. Using a time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, we show that the Floquet Hamiltonian of the model can be mapped onto a two-channel Kondo model, in which the impurity is screened by separate conduction bands corresponding to parity-even and odd superpositions of the metallic leads. By changing the frequency and amplitude of the perturbation, one can tune the system to a quantum critical point with symmetric coupling of the impurity to both channels. For the understanding of the driven state, energy absorption from the drive must be considered: Although the absorption at the impurity is balanced by the energy flow into the conduction band, locally it leads to non-thermal distribution functions which can have a detrimental effect on the Kondo physics. However, a numerical simulation demonstrates that the absorption can be systematically suppressed at a fixed value of the induced couplings by increasing the frequency, so that the time-averaged dynamics in the driven one-channel Anderson model can be used to study the critical behavior of the two-channel model.

Nonequilibrium dynamics across an impurity quantum critical point due to quantum quenches

Marco Schirò

Whether a small quantum mechanical system is able to equilibrate with its environment once an external local perturbation drives it out of thermal equilibrium is a central question which cuts across many different fields of science. Here we consider such a problem for a correlated quantum impurity coupled to a fermionic reservoir and driven out of equilibrium by local quantum quenches such as those recently realized in optical absorption experiments on single quantum dots. We argue that equilibration in this problem is deeply connected to the occurrence of the Kondo effect at low energy and that a highly nontrivial dynamical behavior may emerge whenever a local quantum critical point intrudes between a conventional Kondo screened phase and a Kondo unscreened one. We discuss this issue in the context of the Anderson impurity model coupled to a pseudogap reservoir by using a correlated time-dependent variational wave function that is able to qualitatively describe this physics

Spin precession and real-time dynamics in the Kondo model: Time-dependent numerical renormalization-group study

Frithjof B. Anders, Avraham Schiller

A detailed derivation of the recently proposed time-dependent numerical renormalization-group (TD-NRG) approach to nonequilibrium dynamics in quantum-impurity systems is presented. We demonstrate that the method is suitable for fermionic as well as bosonic baths. Comparisons with exact analytical results for the charge relaxation in the resonant-level model and for dephasing in the spin-boson model establish the accuracy of the method. The real-time dynamics of a single spin coupled to each type of bath is investigated. We use the TD-NRG to calculate the spin relaxation and spin precession of a single Kondo impurity. The short- and long-time dynamics are studied as a function of temperature in the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic regimes. The short-time dynamics agrees very well with analytical results obtained at second order in the exchange coupling $J$. In the ferromagnetic regime, the transient spin decay is described by the scaling variable $x=2{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}\ensuremath{\mid}J(T)\ensuremath{\mid}Tt$. In the antiferromagnetic regime, the long-time decay is governed for $T<{T}_{K}$ by the Kondo time scale $1∕{T}_{K}$. Here ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{F}$ is the conduction-electron density of states, ${T}_{K}$ is the Kondo temperature, and $J(T)$ is the effective exchange coupling at temperature $T$. Results for spin precession are obtained by rotating the external magnetic field from the $x$ axis to the $z$ axis.

Variational principle for quantum impurity systems in and out of equilibrium: Application to Kondo problems

Yuto Ashida, Tao Shi, Mari Carmen Bañuls +2 more

We provide a detailed formulation of the recently proposed variational approach [Y. Ashida, T. Shi, M.-C. Ba\~nuls, J. I. Cirac, and E. Demler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 026805 (2018)] to study ground-state properties and out-of-equilibrium dynamics for generic quantum spin-impurity systems. Motivated by the original ideas of Tomonaga, Lee, Low, and Pines, we construct a canonical transformation that completely decouples the impurity from the bath degrees of freedom. By combining this transformation with a Gaussian ansatz for the fermionic bath, we obtain a family of variational many-body states that can efficiently encode the strong entanglement between the impurity and fermions of the bath. We give a detailed derivation of equations of motions in the imaginary- and real-time evolutions on the variational manifold. We benchmark our approach by applying it to investigate ground-state and dynamical properties of the anisotropic Kondo model and compare results with those obtained using the matrix-product state (MPS) ansatz. We show that our approach can achieve an accuracy comparable to MPS-based methods with several orders of magnitude fewer variational parameters than the corresponding MPS ansatz. Comparisons to the Yosida ansatz and the exact solution from the Bethe ansatz are also discussed. We use our approach to investigate the two-lead Kondo model and analyze its long-time spatiotemporal behavior and the conductance behavior at finite bias and magnetic fields. The obtained results are consistent with the previous findings in the Anderson model and the exact solutions at the Toulouse point.
