Abstract

From consideration of the order-parameter distribution, we propose an observable which makes a clear distinction between true and quasi-long-range orders in the two-dimensional generalized q-state clock model. Measuring this quantity by Monte Carlo simulations for q=8, we construct a phase diagram and identify critical properties across the phase-separation lines among the true long-range order, quasi-long-range order, and disorder. Our result supports the theoretical prediction that there appears a discontinuous order-disorder transition as soon as the two phase-separation lines merge.

Phases and phase transitions of the disordered quantum clock model

We study the phases and phase transitions of a disordered one-dimensional quantum $q$-state clock Hamiltonian using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Making contact with earlier results, we confirm that the clean, translational invariant version of the model, for $q=6$, hosts an intermediate emergent quasi-long-range ordered (QLRO) phase between the symmetry-broken true long-range ordered (TLRO) phase and the disordered (paramagnetic) phase. With increasing disorder strength, the quasi-long-range ordered phase shrinks and finally vanishes at a multicritical point, beyond which there is a direct transition from the TLRO phase to the paramagnetic phase. After establishing the phase diagram, we characterize the critical behaviors of the various quantum phase transitions in the model. We find that weak disorder is an irrelevant perturbation of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions that separate the QLRO phase from the TLRO and paramagnetic phases. For stronger disorder, some of the critical exponents become disorder-dependent already before the system reaches the multicritical point. We also show that beyond the multicritical point, the direct transition from the TLRO phase to the paramagnetic phase is governed by an infinite-randomness critical point in line with strong-disorder renormalization group predictions. While our numerical results are for $q=6$, we expect the qualitative features of the behavior to hold for all $q>4$.

Mô đun xoắn trong mô hình q-state clock

We study the phase transition properties of the two-dimentional q-state clock model by an extensive Monte Carlo simulation. Several independent physical quantities, including the specific heat, the magnetization and the helicity modulus had been calculated for q > 5. The specific heat and the magnetization shows the behavior of two distinct phase transitions, including the higher phase transition, T2, between the disordered phase and the quasi-long-range ordered phase and the lower phase transition, T1, between the quasi-long-range ordered phase and the quasi-long-range ordered phase. The helicity modulus not only show that T2 is the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition but also has signature of phase transition around T1.

Two-Dimensional J 1 − J 2 Clock Model: Enhanced Symmetries, Emergent Orders, and Landau-Incompatible Transitions

Pulloor Kuttanikkad Vishnu, Abhishodh Prakash, Rajesh Narayanan +1 more

We present a comprehensive study on the frustrated J_{1}-J_{2} classical q-state clock model with even q>4 on a two-dimensional square lattice, revealing a rich ensemble of phases driven by competing interactions. In the unfrustrated regime (J_{1}>2J_{2}), the model reproduces the standard clock model phenomenology: a low-temperature Z_{q}-broken ferromagnet, an intermediate XY-like critical quasi-long-range-ordered phase with emergent U(1) symmetry, and a high-temperature paramagnet. For J_{1}<2J_{2}, frustration stabilizes five distinct regimes: the disordered paramagnet, a stripe-ordered phase breaking Z_{q}×Z_{2} symmetry, two Z_{2}-broken nematic phases (one with and one without quasi-long-range order), and an exotic stripe phase with emergent discrete Z_{q} spin degrees of freedom prohibited in the microscopic Hamiltonian. Remarkably, this seemingly forbidden Z_{q} order emerges via a relevant operator in the infrared long-wavelength limit, rather than from an irrelevant perturbation, highlighting a nonstandard route to emergence. Using large-scale corner transfer matrix renormalization group calculations, complemented by classical Monte Carlo simulations, we map the complete phase diagram and identify Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless, Ising, first-order, and unconventional Landau-incompatible transitions between different phases. Finally, we propose an effective field-theoretic framework that encompasses these emergent orders and their interwoven transitions.

Quasi-long-range order in the 2D XY model with random phase shifts

Vincenzo Alba, Andrea Pelissetto, Ettore Vicari

We study the square-lattice XY model in the presence of random phase shifts. We consider two different disorder distributions with zero average shift and investigate the low-temperature quasi-long-range order phase which occurs for sufficiently low disorder. By means of Monte Carlo simulations we determine several universal quantities which are then compared with the analytic predictions of the random spin-wave theory. We observe a very good agreement which indicates that the universal long-distance behavior in the whole low-disorder low-temperature phase is fully described by the random spin-wave theory.

Long-Range Order in a Strictly Short-Range Quasi-2D XY Model: When Critical Fluctuations Matter

Minghui Hu, Chao Zhang, Da‐jun Zhang +3 more

The phase of spins in the quasi-two-dimensional (q2D) XY model has emerged as a topic of significant interest across multiple subfields of physics. Conventional wisdom, rooted in the Mermin-Wagner theorem and supported by existing paradigms, asserts that true long-range (LR) order is prohibited in q2D systems with continuous symmetries and short-range (SR) interactions. In this Letter, we propose a strictly SR q2D XY model defined on a plane perpendicularly intersected by a group of parallel planes, where each plane consists of XY spins coupled via nearest-neighbor interactions. Through large-scale Monte Carlo simulations complemented by finite-size scaling analysis, we establish the complete phase diagram of the setup. A LR ordered phase emerges in the q2D model when the spins on the parallel planes develop a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical phase. The LR ordered phase is anisotropic: true LR correlations develop exclusively along the direction of the intersection lines, while the perpendicular direction exhibits quasi-long-range order. Furthermore, the LR order exhibits Goldstone-mode physics. Our findings reveal a mechanism for stabilizing LR order in low-dimensional systems with continuous symmetries, thereby establishing a new platform for studying exotic superfluidity.

Critical phenomena and quantum phase transition in long range Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains

Nicolas Laflorencie, Ian K. Affleck, Mona Berciu

Antiferromagnetic Hamiltonians with short range, non-frustrating interactions are well known to exhibit long range magnetic order in dimensions d ≥2 but exhibit only quasi-long-range order, with power-law decay of correlations, in d = 1 (for half-integer spin). On the other hand, non-frustrating long range interactions can induce long range order in d = 1. We study Hamiltonians in which the long range interactions have an adjustable amplitude λ, as well as an adjustable power law 1/| x | α , using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo and analytic methods: spin-wave, large N non-linear σ model, and renormalization group methods. We map out the phase diagram in the λ–α plane and study the nature of the critical line separating the phases with long range and quasi-long-range order. We find that this corresponds to a novel line of critical points with continuously varying critical exponents and a dynamical exponent, z <1.
