Abstract

We report a continuous variable key distribution system that achieves a final secure key rate of 3.45 kilobits/s over a distance of 24.2 km of optical fiber. The protocol uses discrete signaling and post-selection to improve reconciliation speed and quantifies security by means of quantum state tomography. Polarization multiplexing and a frequency translation scheme permit transmission of a continuous wave local oscillator and suppression of noise from guided acoustic wave Brillouin scattering by more than 27 dB.

Security of a discretely signaled continuous variable quantum key distribution protocol for high rate systems

Zheshen Zhang, Paul L. Voss

We propose a continuous variable based quantum key distribution protocol that makes use of discretely signaled coherent light and reverse error reconciliation. We present a rigorous security proof against collective attacks with realistic lossy, noisy quantum channels, imperfect detector efficiency, and detector electronic noise. This protocol is promising for convenient, high-speed operation at link distances up to 50 km with the use of post-selection.

Long-distance discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 126.56 km of fiber with a local local oscillator

Yan Pan, Mingze Wu, Heng Wang +14 more

Discrete modulation is a practical and device-friendly solution for high-speed continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD), offering strong compatibility with existing coherent optical communication systems. However, its achievable transmission distance has remained considerably shorter than that of Gaussian-modulated protocols, limiting its practical deployment. In this work, we overcome this limitation by combining an advanced security analysis method with probabilistically shaped modulation and an efficient digital signal processing algorithm. We experimentally demonstrate a local local oscillator CV-QKD system over a 126.56 km span of single-mode fiber, achieving an asymptotic secret key rate of 171.42 kbps. This result significantly extends the reach of discrete-modulated CV-QKD and confirms its potential as a viable candidate for the commercialization and large-scale practical application of quantum key distribution technology. Discrete modulation offers a practical approach for high-speed transmission in continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) but struggles with limited transmission distances. The authors employ advanced security analysis, sophisticated signal processing algorithms, and probabilistic shaping to achieve a record 126.56 km transmission distance, supporting the commercial viability of CV-QKD systems

Four-State Modulation Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution over a 30-km Fiber and Analysis of Excess Noise

Xuyang Wang, Zengliang Bai, Shaofeng Wang +2 more

We report a fiber-based four-state discrete modulation continuous variable quantum key distribution system based on homodyne detection. A secret key rate of 1kbit/s is achieved at a transmission distance of 30.2 km. Two factors that result in the excess noises of the quantum key distribution system are analyzed. The first is the relative phase dithering between the signal and local fields, and the second is the local field leakage into the signal field due to the scattering process that depolarizes the local field. It is found that the latter has a significant impact on the excess noise, which is the main limiting factor to the long-distance secure quantum transmission. Some protocols are also given to decrease the excess noise effectively.

High-performance long-distance discrete-modulation continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Yan Feng Tian, Yu Zhang, Shuaishuai Liu +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate a high-rate discretely modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 80-km standard single-mode fiber with a 2.5 Gbaud, 16-symbol, two-ring constellation. With the help of well-designed digital signal processing algorithms, the excess noise of the system can be effectively suppressed. The achieved secret key rates are 49.02 Mbits/s, 11.86 Mbits/s, and 2.11 Mbits/s over 25-km, 50-km, and 80-km optical fiber, respectively, and achieve 67.4%, 70.0%, and 66.5% of the secret key rate performance of a Gaussian-modulated protocol. Our work shows that it is feasible to build a high-performance, long-distance continuous-variable quantum key distribution system with only a small constellation size.

Long-Distance Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution over 202.81 km of Fiber

Yichen Zhang, Ziyang Chen, Stefano Pirandola +7 more

Quantum key distribution provides secure keys resistant to code-breaking quantum computers. The continuous-variable version of quantum key distribution offers the advantages of higher secret key rates in metropolitan areas, as well as the use of standard telecom components that can operate at room temperature. However, the transmission distance of these systems (compared with discrete-variable systems) are currently limited and considered unsuitable for long-distance distribution. Herein, we report the experimental results of long distance continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 202.81 km of ultralow-loss optical fiber by suitably controlling the excess noise and employing highly efficient reconciliation procedures. This record-breaking implementation of the continuous-variable quantum key distribution doubles the previous distance record and shows the road for long-distance and large-scale secure quantum key distribution using room-temperature standard telecom components.
