Abstract

In this work we have used extensive Monte Carlo simulations and finite size scaling theory to study the phase transition in the dipolar planar rotator model (dPRM), also known as dipolar XY model. The true long-range character of the dipolar interactions was taken into account by using the Ewald summation technique. Our results for the critical exponents do not fit those from known universality classes. We observed that the specific heat is apparently non-divergent and the critical exponents are ν = 1.277(2), β = 0.2065(4) and γ = 2.218(5). The critical temperature was found to be T(c) = 1.201(1). Our results are clearly distinct from those of a recent renormalization group study from Maier and Schwabl (2004 Phys. Rev. B 70 134430) and agrees with the results from a previous study of the anisotropic Heisenberg model with dipolar interactions in a bilayer system using a cut-off in the dipolar interactions (Mól and Costa 2009 Phys. Rev. B 79 054404).

Phase transition in two-dimensional magnetic systems with dipolar interactions

L. A. S. Mόl, B. V. Costa

In this work we have used extensive Monte Carlo calculations to study the planar to paramagnetic phase transition in the two-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model with dipolar interactions (AHd) considering the true long-range character of the dipolar interactions by means of the Ewald summation. Our results are consistent with an order-disorder phase transition with unusual critical exponents in agreement with our previous results for the Planar Rotator model with dipolar interactions. Nevertheless, our results disagrees with the Renormalization Group results of Maier and Schwabl [PRB, 70, 134430 (2004)] and the results of Rapini et. al. [PRB, 75, 014425 (2007)], where the AHd was studied using a cut-off in the evaluation of the dipolar interactions. We argue that besides the long-range character of dipolar interactions their anisotropic character may have a deeper effect in the system than previously believed. Besides, our results shows that the use of a cut-off radius in the evaluation of dipolar interactions must be avoided when analyzing the critical behavior of magnetic systems, since it may lead to erroneous results.

Novel phase transition in two-dimensional xy-models with long-range interaction

P.G. Maier, Franz Schwabl

The purpose of this article is to give an overview of results concerning ordering and critical properties of two-dimensional ferromagnets including the dipolar interaction. We investigate a two-dimensional xy-model extended by the dipolar interaction.Describing our system by a nonlinear σ-model and using renormalization group methods we predict a phase transition to an ordered state. This transition is due to the long-range dipolar interaction. The ferromagnetic phase is governed by a low temperature fixed-point with infinite dipolar coupling. In the critical regime we find exponential behavior for the correlation length and the order parameter in contrast to the usual power laws. The nature of the transition shows a striking similarity to the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We show that there is a whole class of longrange xy-models leading to such non-standard behavior.Parameterizing the divergencies in terms of the correlation length we are able to calculate the critical exponents. These exponents are correct in any loop order.

Monte Carlo Studies of the Square Lattice Ising System with the Two-Dimensional Dipolar Interaction

Seizo Watarai, Keizô Yamamoto, Akira Nakanishi

Monte Carlo simulations are performed on the square lattice Ising system with both the nearest neighbor and the two-dimensional dipolar interactions in order to investigate the critical property of ferromagnetic phase transitions in this 2-dimensional system. Applying the finite size scaling theory to Monte Carlo data just near the transition point, the critical indices of this dipolar system are calculated and α=0.31±0.04, β =0.20±0.02, γ=1.08±0.20 and ν=0.72±0.10 are obtained. However, in the temperature region considerably far from the transition point, different values of α, β and γ seem to be adequate, which are rather close to those of the rigorous result of the 2-dimensional Ising model.

A Monte Carlo Study of the Dipolar Universality Class in Three Dimensions

Akira Matsumoto, Yu Nakayama, Toshiki Onagi +1 more

The dipolar universality class describes the phase transition in 3D ferromagnets with strong dipolar interactions, as first discussed by Aharony and Fisher in the 1970s. While this universality class has been studied theoretically using renormalization group methods, as well as experimentally, little is known about it from Monte Carlo simulations. In this paper, we aim to bridge this gap. We introduce a lattice model that faithfully implements the transverse constraint on the order parameter. We introduce a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm which involves a combination of local Metropolis updates preserving the constraint, and a global update of the zero mode. We perform simulations on cubic lattices up to volume $48\times 48 \times 48$. We observe a continuous phase transition between the disordered and ordered phases. We obtain estimates of the critical exponent $ν$ and the critical Binder ratio, and compare them with results from other techniques. We also study whether rotational invariance emerges at the critical point, and discuss the influence of the toroidal geometry on this question.

Critical behavior of the two-dimensionalXYmodel

Rajan Gupta, CLIVE F. BAILLIE

We present detailed Monte Carlo results for the susceptibility \ensuremath{\chi}, correlation length \ensuremath{\xi}, and specific heat ${\mathit{C}}_{\mathit{v}}$ for the XY model. The simulations are done on ${64}^{2}$, ${128}^{2}$, ${256}^{2}$, and ${512}^{2}$ lattices over the temperature range 0.98\ensuremath{\le}T\ensuremath{\le}1.43 corresponding to 270. Fits to \ensuremath{\chi} and \ensuremath{\xi} data favor a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) singularity over a second-order transition; however, unconstrained four-parameter KT fits do not confirm the predicted values \ensuremath{\nu}=0.5 and \ensuremath{\eta}=0.25. Our best estimate, ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$=0.894(5), is obtained using KT fits with \ensuremath{\nu} fixed at 0.5. The exponent \ensuremath{\eta} is calculated as a function of temperature in the spin-wave phase using Monte Carlo renormalization-group and finite-size-scaling methods. Both methods give consistent results and we find \ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\approxeq}0.235 at T=0.894. We also present results for the behavior of vortex density across the transition and exhibit how the dilute-gas approximation breaks down.

Universal finite-size scaling analysis of Ising models with long-range interactions at the upper critical dimensionality: Isotropic case

Daniel Grüneberg, Alfred Hucht

We investigate a two-dimensional Ising model with long-range interactions that emerge from a generalization of the magnetic dipolar interaction in spin systems with in-plane spin orientation. This interaction is, in general, anisotropic whereby in the present work we focus on the isotropic case for which the model is found to be at its upper critical dimensionality. To investigate the critical behavior the temperature and field dependence of several quantities are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. On the basis of the Privman-Fisher hypothesis and results of the renormalization group the numerical data are analyzed in the framework of a finite-size scaling analysis and compared to finite-size scaling functions derived from a Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson model in zero mode (mean-field) approximation. The obtained excellent agreement suggests that at least in the present case the concept of universal finite-size scaling functions can be extended to the upper critical dimensionality.
