Abstract

We study perfect state transfer on quantum networks represented by weighted graphs. Our focus is on graphs constructed from the join and related graph operators. Some specific results we prove include: (1) The join of a weighted two-vertex graph with any regular graph has perfect state transfer. This generalizes a result of Casaccino et al. [clms09] where the regular graph is a complete graph or a complete graph with a missing link. In contrast, the half-join of a weighted two-vertex graph with any weighted regular graph has no perfect state transfer. This implies that adding weights in a complete bipartite graph do not help in achieving perfect state transfer. (2) A Hamming graph has perfect state transfer between each pair of its vertices. This is obtained using a closure property on weighted Cartesian products of perfect state transfer graphs. Moreover, on the hypercube, we show that perfect state transfer occurs between uniform superpositions on pairs of arbitrary subcubes. This generalizes results of Bernasconi et al. [bgs08] and Moore and Russell [mr02]. Our techniques rely heavily on the spectral properties of graphs built using the join and Cartesian product operators.

Quantum pure state transfer

Hermie Monterde

Quantum spin systems carry information in the form of quantum states, and the propagation of these quantum states is described by a quantum walk. In order to construct an operational quantum computer, the task of reliably transmitting quantum states from one part of a quantum computer to another must be accomplished. Quantum walks are known to be powerful tools in achieving this task. Pure states are quantum states represented by unit complex vectors. In this thesis, we use algebraic and combinatorial techniques to develop the theory of perfect state transfer on pure states in quantum walks, with emphasis on the adjacency and Laplacian matrices as Hamiltonians of a graph representing a spin network. We prove basic results about eigenvalue supports, periodicity, and strong cospectrality on pure states. We investigate a special type of strong cospectrality called m-strong cospectrality, and show that m-strongly cospectral pure states admit desirable quantum state transfer properties. Several characterisations of perfect state transfer are also given, one for general pure states, one for m-strongly pure states, and another one for real pure states. These characterisations give rise to algebraic and analytic properties of pure states admitting perfect state transfer. Moreover, we determine all complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, cycles, and paths that admit perfect state transfer between m-strongly pure states. Constructions of infinite families of graphs admitting perfect state transfer are also given. We also characterise perfect state transfer between vertex states in joins and blowup graphs. We determine when the join operation preserves or induces perfect state transfer in the resulting graph. We also use blow-up graphs to construct new families of regular graphs with perfect state transfer. We use these two graph operations to demonstrate that graphs with perfect state transfer can be constructed from graphs that do not exhibit such a property. Finally, we investigate perfect state transfer on s-pair states – pure states that represent entanglement between two vertices. We establish combinatorial and spectral properties of s-pair states with perfect state transfer, and characterise its existence in complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, paths and distance-regular graphs. Further, we construct infinite families of graphs with s-pair state transfer.

Perfect state transfer, integral circulants, and join of graphs

Ricardo Javier Angeles-Canul, R.M. Norton, Michael Opperman +3 more

We propose new families of graphs which exhibit quantum perfect state transfer. Our constructions are based on the join operator on graphs, its circulant generalizations, and the Cartesian product of graphs. We build upon the results of Ba\v{s}i\'{c} and Petkovi\'{c} ({\em Applied Mathematics Letters} {\bf 22}(10):1609-1615, 2009) and construct new integral circulants and regular graphs with perfect state transfer. More specifically, we show that the integral circulant $\textsc{ICG}_{n}(\{2,n/2^{b}\} \cup Q)$ has perfect state transfer, where $b \in \{1,2\}$, $n$ is a multiple of $16$ and $Q$ is a subset of the odd divisors of $n$. Using the standard join of graphs, we also show a family of double-cone graphs which are non-periodic but exhibit perfect state transfer. This class of graphs is constructed by simply taking the join of the empty two-vertex graph with a specific class of regular graphs. This answers a question posed by Godsil (arxiv.org math/08062074).

Quantum state transfer on Q-graphs

Xiaoqin Zhang, Shu‐Yu Cui, Gui‐Xian Tian

We study the existence of quantum state transfer in $\mathcal{Q}$-graphs in this paper. The $\mathcal{Q}$-graph of a graph $G$, denoted by $\mathcal{Q}(G)$, is the graph derived from $G$ by plugging a new vertex to each edge of $G$ and joining two new vertices which lie on adjacent edges of $G$ by an edge. We show that, if all eigenvalues of a regular graph $G$ are integers, then its $\mathcal{Q}$-graph $\mathcal{Q}(G)$ has no perfect state transfer. In contrast, we also prove that the $\mathcal{Q}$-graph of a regular graph has pretty good state transfer under some mild conditions. Finally, applying the obtained results, we also exhibit many new families of $\mathcal{Q}$-graphs having no perfect state transfer, but admitting pretty good state transfer.

Perfect State Transfer Between Real Pure States

Chris D. Godsil, Steve Kirkland, Hermie Monterde

Abstract. Pure states correspond to one-dimensional subspaces of [Formula: see text] represented by unit vectors. In this paper, we develop the theory of perfect state transfer (PST) between real pure states with emphasis on the adjacency and Laplacian matrices as Hamiltonians of a graph representing a quantum spin network. We characterize PST between real pure states based on the spectral information of a graph and prove three fundamental results: (i) every periodic real pure state [Formula: see text] admits PST with another real pure state [Formula: see text], (ii) every connected graph admits PST between real pure states, and (iii) for any pair of real pure states [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] and for any time [Formula: see text], there exists a real symmetric matrix [Formula: see text] such that [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] admit PST relative to [Formula: see text] at time [Formula: see text]. We also determine all real pure states that admit PST in complete graphs, complete bipartite graphs, paths, and cycles. This leads to a complete characterization of pair and plus state transfer in paths and complete bipartite graphs. We give constructions of graphs that admit PST between real pure states. Finally, using results on the spread of graphs, we prove that amongst all [Formula: see text]-vertex simple unweighted graphs, the least minimum PST time between real pure states is attained by any join graph for the Laplacian case, while it is attained by the join of an empty graph and a complete graph of appropriate sizes for the adjacency case. Reproducibility of computational results. Quantum walks on join graphs

Steve Kirkland, Hermie Monterde

The join X ∨ Y of two graphs X and Y is the graph obtained by joining each vertex of X to each vertex of Y . We explore the behaviour of a continuous quantum walk on a join graph with positive edge weights having the adjacency matrix or Laplacian matrix as its associated Hamiltonian, where the underlying graphs are assumed to be regular when dealing with the adjacency matrix. We characterize strong cospectrality, periodicity and perfect state transfer (PST) in a join graph. We also determine conditions in which strong cospectrality, periodicity and PST are preserved in the join. Under certain conditions, we show that there are graphs with no PST that exhibit PST when joined with another graph. We also show that | | U M ( X ∨ Y , t ) u , v | − | U M ( X , t ) u , v | | ≤ 2 | V ( X ) | for all vertices u and v of X , where U M ( X ∨ Y , t ) and U M ( X , t ) denote the transition matrices of X ∨ Y and X respectively relative to the adjacency or Laplacian matrix. We demonstrate that the bound 2 | V ( X ) | is tight for infinite families of graphs.

PERFECT STATE TRANSFER, GRAPH PRODUCTS AND EQUITABLE PARTITIONS

Ge Yang, Benjamin Greenberg, Oscar Perez +1 more

We describe new constructions of graphs which exhibit perfect state transfer on continuous-time quantum walks. Our constructions are based on generalizations of the double cones and variants of the Cartesian graph products (which include the hypercube). We also describe a generalization of the path collapsing argument (which reduces questions about perfect state transfer to simpler weighted multigraphs) for graphs with equitable distance partitions.
