Abstract

We present a spectrally decorrelated photon pair source bridging the visible and telecom wavelength regions. Tailored design and fabrication of a solid-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) lead to the emission of signal and idler photons into only a single spectral and spatial mode. Thus no narrowband filtering is necessary and the heralded generation of pure photon number states in ultrafast wave packets at telecom wavelengths becomes possible.

Narrowband heralded single photons via Bragg grating inscription in germanium-doped photonic crystal fiber

Will A. M. Smith, Alex I. Flint, Rex H. S. Bannerman +4 more

We present a fiber-based source of narrowband heralded single photons in the telecoms C-band. Photon pairs were generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing in photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a germanium-doped region incorporated into its core for enhanced photosensitivity. A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a bandwidth of 0.2 nm and contrast of 17.5 dB was UV-written into the PCF to reflect a sub-nanometre slice of the photon-pair spectrum. This allowed narrowband photons to be heralded at the proximal end of the fiber by detection events after the distal end. We present photon counting data with a coincidence-to-accidental ratio of up to 70. Our source demonstrates a viable route to fiber-integrated narrowband heralded single photon sources suitable for coupling to quantum memories and interfacing heterogeneous qubit types.

Raman-free fibered photon-pair source

Martin Cordier, Philippe Delaye, Frédéric Gérôme +2 more

Raman-scattering noise in silica has been the key obstacle toward the realisation of high quality fiber-based photon-pair sources. Here, we experimentally demonstrate how to get past this limitation by dispersion tailoring a xenon-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. The source operates at room temperature, and is designed to generate Raman-free photon-pairs at useful wavelength ranges, with idler in the telecom, and signal in the visible range. We achieve a coincidence-to-accidentals ratio as high as 2740 combined with an ultra low heralded second order coherence [Formula: see text], indicating a very high signal to noise ratio and a negligible multi-photon emission probability. Moreover, by gas-pressure tuning, we demonstrate the control of photon frequencies over a range as large as 13 THz, covering S-C and L telecom band for the idler photon. This work demonstrates that hollow-core photonic crystal fiber is an excellent platform to design high quality photon-pair sources, and could play a driving role in the emerging quantum technology.

This paper report substantial progress towards the realization of a bright heralded pure single photon source in the telecom wavelength regime based on waveguided SPDC. We implement a configuration proposed, which obsoletes spectral filtering by spectral engineering the generated photon pair.

Bright photonic crystal fiber source of photon pairs in visible-telecom band

A. F. Khairullin, Maksim A. Smirnov, Ilya V. Fedotov +2 more

An actual task of quantum communications over long distances is the creation of a bright source of photon pairs operating at standard wavelengths of fiber optic communication lines. In this work, we experimentally investigated the spectral and correlation characteristics of photon pairs generated on the phenomenon of spontaneous four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear photonic-crystal fiber with a wavelength of one of the photons near 1.5 μm. The demonstrated source can be used as an efficient single photon generator at a telecommunications wavelength with prediction and tuning over a wide spectral range.

Integrated telecom wavelength heralded single-photon source based on GHz gated detectors

We introduce a simple and flexible concept for a heralded—spectrally pure—single-photon source. The scheme uses a probabilistic photon-pair source pumped with a continuous-wave laser, whereby a rapid gating InGaAs/InP single-photon avalanche diode provides a synchronous clock for the system. The low timing jitter of the detector temporally resolves, and hence spectrally filters, the heralded photons. We demonstrate the concept by combining this with a narrow-band integrated silicon nitride photon-pair source. This simple architecture is capable of heralding photons with high spectral purity in the telecom band but could be adapted to other wavelengths and bandwidth regimes.
