Photons with tunable spectral shapes: The transition from frequency anticorrelated to correlated photon pairs

Abstract

We present an experimental demonstration of the full control of the frequency correlations of entangled photon pairs. The joint spectrum of photon pairs is continuously varied from photons that exhibit anticorrelation in frequency to photons that exhibit correlation in frequency, passing through the case of uncorrelated photons. Highly entangled frequency-anticorrelated photon pairs were obtained even when an ultrafast laser was used as a pump. The different kinds of correlations are obtained without changing neither the wavelength, nor the nonlinear crystal.

Tunable control of the frequency correlations of entangled photons

Martin Hendrych, Michal Mičuda, Juan P. Torres

We experimentally demonstrate a new technique to control the type of frequency correlations of entangled photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion. Frequency-correlated and frequency-anticorrelated photons are produced when a broadband pulse is used as a pump. The method is based on the control of the group velocities of the interacting waves and can be applied in any nonlinear medium and frequency band of interest.

We demonstrate experimentally tunable control of the joint spectrum, i.e., waveform and degree of frequency correlations, of paired photons generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion. This control is mediated by the spatial shape of the pump beam in type-I noncollinear configurations.

Engineering the frequency correlations of paired photons with tilted pulses in parametric downconversion

Martin Hendrych, N. González, Juan P. Torres

We put forward a new scheme to tailor the frequency correlations of paired photons which allows their spectral properties to be tuned from correlation to anticorrelation, including uncorrelation. The method is based on the proper tailoring of the group velocities of all interacting waves through the use of beams with angular dispersion. The method can be implemented in materials and frequency bands where conventional solutions do not hold. This technique makes possible the generation of frequency correlated photons, heralded single photons with a high degree of purity from pairs of uncorrelated photons, and the suppression of distinguishing information contained in the frequency spectrum of polarization entangled photon pairs.

Two-dimensional control of a biphoton joint spectrum

Anatoly Shukhin, Inbar Hurvitz, Sivan Trajtenberg‐Mills +2 more

Control over the joint spectral amplitude of a photon pair has proved highly desirable for many quantum applications, since it contains the spectral quantum correlations, and has crucial effects on the indistinguishability of photons, as well as promising emerging applications involving complex quantum functions and frequency encoding of qudits. Until today, this has been achieved by engineering a single degree of freedom, either by custom poling nonlinear crystal or by shaping the pump pulse. We present a combined approach where two degrees of freedom, the phase-matching function, and the pump spectrum, are controlled. This approach enables the two-dimensional control of the joint spectral amplitude, generating a variety of spectrally encoded quantum states - including frequency uncorrelated states, frequency-bin Bell states, and biphoton qudit states. In addition, the joint spectral amplitude is controlled by photon bunching and anti-bunching, reflecting the symmetry of the phase-matching function.

Generation of indistinguishable and pure heralded single photons with tunable bandwidth

Xiaojuan Shi, Alejandra Valencia, Martin Hendrych +1 more

We describe a new scheme to fully control the joint spectrum of paired photons generated in spontaneous parametric downconversion. We show the capability of this method to generate frequency-uncorrelated photon pairs that are pure and indistinguishable and whose bandwidth can be readily tuned. Importantly, the scheme we propose can be implemented in any nonlinear crystal and frequency band of interest.
