Abstract

A class of pseudo-Hermitian quantum system with an explicit form of the positive-definite metric in the Hilbert space is presented. The general method involves a realization of the basic canonical commutation relations defining the quantum system in terms of operators that are Hermitian with respect to a pre-determined positive-definite metric in the Hilbert space. Appropriate combinations of these operators result in a large number of pseudo-Hermitian quantum systems admitting entirely real spectra and unitary time evolution. The examples considered include simple harmonic oscillators with complex angular frequencies, Stark (Zeeman) effect with non-Hermitian interaction, non-Hermitian general quadratic form of N boson (fermion) operators, symmetric and asymmetric XXZ spin chain in the complex magnetic field, non-Hermitian Haldane–Shastry spin chain and Lipkin–Meshkov–Glick model.

Constructing exactly solvable pseudo-hermitian many-particle quantum systems by isospectral deformation

Pijush K. Ghosh

A class of non-Dirac-hermitian many-particle quantum systems admitting entirely real spectra and unitary time-evolution is presented. These quantum models are isospectral with Dirac-hermitian systems and are exactly solvable. The general method involves a realization of the basic canonical commutation relations defining the quantum system in terms of operators those are hermitian with respect to a pre-determined positive definite metric in the Hilbert space. Appropriate combinations of these operators result in a large number of pseudo-hermitian quantum systems admitting entirely real spectra and unitary time evolution. Examples of a pseudo-hermitian rational Calogero model and XXZ spin-chain are considered.

Deconstructing non-Dirac–Hermitian supersymmetric quantum systems

Pijush K Ghosh

A method to construct a non-Dirac–Hermitian supersymmetric quantum system that is isospectral with a Dirac–Hermitian Hamiltonian is presented. The general technique involves a realization of the basic canonical (anti-)commutation relations involving both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom in terms of non-Dirac–Hermitian operators which are Hermitian in a Hilbert space that is endowed with a pre-determined positive-definite metric. A pseudo-Hermitian realization of the Clifford algebra for a pre-determined positive-definite metric is used to construct supersymmetric systems with one or many degrees of freedom. It is shown that exactly solvable non-Dirac–Hermitian supersymmetric quantum systems can be constructed corresponding to each exactly solvable Dirac–Hermitian system. Examples of non-Dirac–Hermitian (i) non-relativistic Pauli Hamiltonian, (ii) super-conformal quantum system, and (iii) supersymmetric Calogero-type models admitting entirely real spectra are presented.

THE METRIC OPERATORS FOR PSEUDO-HERMITIAN HAMILTONIAN

Wenhua Wang, ZhengLi Chen, W. Li

Abstract The Hamiltonian of a conventional quantum system is Hermitian, which ensures real spectra of the Hamiltonian and unitary evolution of the system. However, real spectra are just the necessary conditions for a Hamiltonian to be Hermitian. In this paper, we discuss the metric operators for pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian which is similar to its adjoint. We first present some properties of the metric operators for pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians and obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for an invertible operator to be a metric operator for a given pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian. When the pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian has real spectra, we provide a new method such that any given metric operator can be transformed into the same positive-definite one and the new inner product with respect to the positive-definite metric operator is well defined. Finally, we illustrate the results obtained with an example.

Comparison of Different Approaches of Finding the Positive Definite Metric in Pseudo-Hermitian Theories

Ananya Ghatak, Bhabani Prasad Mandal

To develop a unitary quantum theory with probabilistic description for pseudo-Hermitian systems one needs to consider the theories in a different Hilbert space endowed with a positive definite metric operator. There are different approaches to find such metric operators. We compare the different approaches of calculating positive definite metric operators in pseudo-Hermitian theories with the help of several explicit examples in non-relativistic as well as in relativistic situations. Exceptional points and spontaneous symmetry breaking are also discussed in these models.

Construction of Pseudo-hermitian matrices describing systems with balanced loss-gain

Pijush K. Ghosh

We present a general construction of pseudo-hermitian matrices in an arbitrary large, but finite dimensional vector space. The positive-definite metric which ensures reality of the entire spectra of a pseudo-hermitian operator, and is used for defining a modified inner-product in the associated vector space is also presented. The construction for an N dimensional vector space is based on the generators of SU (N ) in the fundamental representation and the identity operator. We apply the results to construct a generic pseudo-hermitian lattice model of size N with balanced loss-gain. The system is amenable to periodic as well as open boundary conditions and by construction, admits entirely real spectra along with unitary time-evolution. The tight binding and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger(SSH) models with nearest neighbour(NN) and next-nearest neighbour(NNN) interaction with balanced loss-gain appear as limiting cases.

The Metric Operator and the Functional Integral Formulation of Pseudo-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics

Hugh F Jones

Pseudo-Hermitian quantum theories are those in which the Hamiltonian H satisfies H† = ηHη-1, where η = e-Q is a positive-definite Hermitian operator, rather than the usual H† = H. In the operator formulation of such theories the standard Hilbert-space metric must be modified by the inclusion of η in order to ensure their probabilistic interpretation. With possible generalizations to quantum field theory in mind, it is important to ask how the functional integral formalism for pseudo-Hermitian theories differs from that of standard theories. It turns out that here Q plays quite a different role, serving primarily to implement a canonical transformation of the variables. It does not appear explicitly in the expression for the vacuum generating functional. Instead, the relation to the Hermitian theory is encoded via the dependence of Z on the external source j(t). These points are illustrated and amplified in various versions of the Swanson model, a non-Hermitian transform of the simple harmonic oscillator.
