Abstract

Surface spontaneous parametric down-conversion is predicted as a consequence of continuity requirements for electric- and magnetic-field amplitudes at a discontinuity of chi;{(2)} nonlinearity. A generalization of the usual two-photon spectral amplitude is suggested to describe this effect. Examples of nonlinear layered structures and periodically poled nonlinear crystals show that surface contributions to spontaneous down-conversion can be important.

Emission of photon pairs at discontinuities of nonlinearity in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Jan Peřina, A. Lukš, Ondřej Haderka

In order to fulfill the continuity requirements for electric- and magnetic-field amplitudes at discontinuities of ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ nonlinearity, additional photon pairs have to be emitted in the area of discontinuity. Generalized two-photon spectral amplitudes can be used to describe properties of photon pairs generated in this process that we call surface spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The spectral structure of such photon pairs is similar to that derived for photon pairs generated in the volume. Surface and volume contributions to spontaneous down-conversion can be comparable as an example of nonlinear layered structures shows.

Role of volume and surface spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the generation of photon pairs in layered media

Dalibor Javůrek, Jan Peřina

A rigorous description of volume and surface spontaneous parametric down-conversion in one-dimensional nonlinear layered structures is developed considering exact continuity relations for the fields' amplitudes at the boundaries. The nonlinear process is described by the quantum momentum operator that provides the Heisenberg equations whose solution is continuous at the boundaries. The transfer-matrix formalism is applied. The volume and surface contributions are clearly identified. Numerical analysis of a structure composed of 20 alternating GaN/AlN layers is given as an example.

Characterization of Broadband Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion in Periodically Poled Materials

Chiara Lindner, Sebastian Wolf, Jens Kießling +1 more

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is one of the most important sources for entangled or correlated photon pairs, which are the foundation of the emerging fields of quantum-optical imaging and spectroscopy. Using periodically poled materials as an SPDC-source allows broad emission spectra in widely tunable wavelength ranges in an efficient and walk-off-free process. For applications that employ nonlinear interference setups, maximum interferometric contrast is only achieved when signal and idler modes are overlapped precisely in the second crystal. Thus, accurate knowledge of the spectral-angular characteristic of SPDC is crucial for designing such devices.

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion in chirped, aperiodically-poled crystals

X. Sánchez-Lozano, J. L. Lucio M.

We present a theoretical analysis of the process of spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) in a nonlinear crystal characterized by a linearly-chirped χ(2) grating along the direction of propagation. Our analysis leads to an expression for the joint spectral amplitude, based on which we can derive various spectral–temporal properties of the photon pairs and of the heralded single photons obtained from the photon pairs, including: The single-photon spectrum (SPS), the chronocyclic Wigner function (CWF) and the Schmidt number. The simulations that we present are for the specific case of a collinear SPDC source based on a PPLN crystal with the signal and idler photons emitted close to the telecom window. We discuss the mechanism for spectral broadening due to the presence of a linearly chirped χ(2) grating, showing that not only the width but also to some extent the shape of the SPDC spectrum may be controlled. Also, we discuss how the fact that the different spectral components are emitted on different planes in the crystal leads to single-photon chirp.

Parametric down-conversion with optimized spectral properties in nonlinear photonic crystals

María Corona, Alfred B. U’Ren

We study the joint spectral properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal in a collinear, degenerate, type-II geometry. We show that the photonic crystal properties may be exploited to compensate for material dispersion and obtain photon pairs that are nearly factorable, in principle, for arbitrary materials and spectral regions, limited by the ability to fabricate the nonlinear crystal with the required periodic variation in the refractive indices for the ordinary and extraordinary waves.
