Visualizing quantum mechanics in phase space

We examine the visualization of quantum mechanics in phase space by means of the Wigner function and the Wigner function flow as a complementary approach to illustrating quantum mechanics in configuration space by wave functions. The Wigner function formalism resembles the mathematical language of classical mechanics of non-interacting particles. Thus, it allows a more direct comparison between classical and quantum dynamical features.

Wigner's phase space function and atomic structure

Jens Peder Dahl, Michael Springborg

We have constructed the Wigner function for the ground state of the hydrogen atom and analysed its variation over phase space. By means of the Weyl correspondence between operators and phase space functions we have then studied the description of angular momentum and resolved a dilemma in the comparison with early quantum mechanics. Finally we have discussed the introduction of local energy densities in coordinate space and demonstrated the validity of a local virial theorem.

The interface of gravity and quantum mechanics illuminated by Wigner phase space

Enno Giese, Zeller, Wolfgang, Stephan Kleinert +4 more

We provide an introduction into the formulation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics using the Wigner phase-space distribution function and apply this concept to two physical situations at the interface of quantum theory and general relativity: (i) the motion of an ensemble of cold atoms relevant to tests of the weak equivalence principle, and (ii) the Kasevich-Chu interferometer. In order to lay the foundations for this analysis we first present a representation-free description of the Kasevich-Chu interferometer based on unitary operators.
