Abstract

We study trapping and propagation of a matter-wave soliton through the interface between uniform medium and a nonlinear optical lattice. Different regimes for transmission of a broad and a narrow solitons are investigated. Reflections and transmissions of solitons are predicted as a function of the lattice phase. The existence of a threshold in the amplitude of the nonlinear optical lattice, separating the transmission and reflection regimes, is verified. The localized nonlinear surface state, corresponding to the soliton trapped by the interface, is found. Variational approach predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations for the original Gross-Pitaevskii equation with nonlinear periodic potentials.

Matter-wave solitons in nonlinear optical lattices

Hidetsugu Sakaguchi, Boris A. Malomed

We introduce a dynamical model of a Bose-Einstein condensate based on the one-dimensional (1D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with a nonlinear optical lattice (NOL), which is represented by the cubic term whose coefficient is periodically modulated in the coordinate. The model describes a situation when the atomic scattering length is spatially modulated, via the optically controlled Feshbach resonance, in an optical lattice created by interference of two laser beams. Relatively narrow solitons supported by the NOL are predicted by means of the variational approximation (VA), and an averaging method is applied to broad solitons. A different feature is a minimum norm (number of atoms), N = N(min), necessary for the existence of solitons. The VA predicts N(min) very accurately. Numerical results are chiefly presented for the NOL with the zero spatial average value of the nonlinearity coefficient. Solitons with values of the amplitude A larger than at N = N(min) are stable. Unstable solitons with smaller, but not too small, A rearrange themselves into persistent breathers. For still smaller A, the soliton slowly decays into radiation without forming a breather. Broad solitons with very small A are practically stable, as their decay is extremely slow. These broad solitons may freely move across the lattice, featuring quasielastic collisions. Narrow solitons, which are strongly pinned to the NOL, can easily form stable complexes. Finally, the weakly unstable low-amplitude solitons are stabilized if a cubic term with a constant coefficient, corresponding to weak attraction, is included in the GPE.

Transmission of matter-wave solitons through nonlinear traps and barriers

Josselin C. Garnier, F. Kh. Abdullaev

The transmissions of matter-wave solitons through linear and nonlinear inhomogeneities induced by the spatial variations of the trap and the scattering length in Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated. The enhanced transmission of a soliton through a linear trap by a modulation of the scattering length, is exhibited. The theory is based on the perturbed inverse scattering transform for solitons, and we show that radiation effects are important. Numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation confirm the theoretical predictions.

Dissipative dynamics of matter-wave solitons in a nonlinear optical lattice

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, H. L. F. da Luz +1 more

Dynamics and stability of solitons in two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC), with one-dimensional (1D) conservative plus dissipative nonlinear optical lattices, are investigated. In the case of focusing media (with attractive atomic systems), the collapse of the wave packet is arrested by the dissipative periodic nonlinearity. The adiabatic variation of the background scattering length leads to metastable matter-wave solitons. When the atom feeding mechanism is used, a dissipative soliton can exist in focusing 2D media with 1D periodic nonlinearity. In the defocusing media (repulsive BEC case) with harmonic trap in one direction and nonlinear optical lattice in the other direction, the stable soliton can exist. Variational approach simulations are confirmed by full numerical results for the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Stabilization of matter-wave solitons in Bessel optical lattice by spatial modulation of the nonlinearity

Chen Hai-Jun, Zhang Yao-Wen

Using variational and numerical solutions of the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we investigate the stabilities of nonrotating and vortex solitons in Bessel optical lattice by spatial modulation of the nonlinearity(nonlinear optical lattice). It is demonstrated that there exist the stable matter-wave solitons in a combination of optical lattices with linear Bessel optical lattices and nonlinear optical lattice. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive the odinary differential equations for the time evolutions of the width and phase of solitons. Through an effective potential, we obtain the stable criteria for all kinds of combinations of the system parameters. We perform direct numerical simulations to support our analytical results, and find that they are in goog agreement.

Resonant scattering of matter-wave gap solitons by optical lattice defects

Valeriy A. Brazhnyi, Mario Salerno

The physical mechanism underlying scattering properties of matter-wave gap solitons (GSs) by linear-optical-lattice defects is investigated. The occurrence of repeated reflection, transmission, and trapping regions for increasing strengths of an optical-lattice defect are shown to be due to resonances with impurity modes inside the defect potential with chemical potentials and numbers of atoms matching corresponding quantities of the incoming GSs. For small amplitude GSs the number of these resonances coincides with the number of bound states existing in the defect potential for the given defect strength. The dependence of the positions and widths of the transmission resonant peaks on incoming velocities is investigated by means of defect-mode analysis and effective-mass theory. The comparisons with direct integrations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation provide good agreement confirming the correctness of our approach. Multiple resonant transmissions through arrays of optical lattice defects are also investigated and the possibility of using them for very precise GS dynamical filters is also suggested.

Dynamical localization of matter-wave solitons in managed barrier potentials

F. Kh. Abdullaev, Josselin C. Garnier

The bright matter-wave soliton propagation through a barrier with a rapidly oscillating position is investigated. The averaged-over rapid oscillations Gross-Pitaevskii equation is derived, where the effective potential has the form of a finite well. Dynamical trapping and quantum tunneling of the soliton in the effective finite well are investigated. The analytical predictions for the effective soliton dynamics is confirmed by numerical simulations of the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation.
