Abstract

We study the three-fermion problem within a 1D model of a Feshbach resonance in order to gain insight into how the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like state at small negative scattering lengths evolves into a Bose-Fermi mixture at small positive scattering lengths. The FFLO state possesses an oscillating superfluid correlation function, while in a Bose-Fermi mixture correlations are monotonic. We find that this behavior is already present at the three-body level. We present an exact study of the three-body problem and gain extra insights by considering world lines of a path-integral Monte Carlo calculation.

THE FULDE–FERRELL–LARKIN–OVCHINNIKOV STATE IN A 3D FERMI GAS SUBJECTED TO A 1D PERIODIC POTENTIAL

Jeroen P. A. Devreese, Serghei N. Klimin, Michiel Wouters +1 more

The question whether an imbalanced Fermi gas can accommodate polarized superfluidity has been the subject of intense study. One prominent candidate for a polarized superfluid state is the Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. In a one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas, indirect evidence for this state has recently been found, but in the three-dimensional (3D) case, this exotic state has hitherto remained elusive. In this brief review, we study the influence of a 1D periodic potential on the FFLO state in an imbalanced 3D Fermi gas. We present a path-integral derivation of the free energy of the system, where the possibility of the FFLO state is included through the saddle-point approximation. Using the free energy, the phase diagram of the system, both at fixed chemical potentials and at fixed densities, is constructed, showing that the stability region of the FFLO state is significantly enlarged by the 1D potential. Subsequently, the influence of the potential on the FFLO pairing mechanism is investigated, leading to a qualitative understanding of the shape of the FFLO region in the different phase diagrams. We conclude by investigating the possibility of an FFLO state with a wave vector that lies skewed with respect to the direction along which the periodic potential varies. Our results provide an additional way to facilitate the experimental observation of the FFLO state in a 3D Fermi gas.

BCS-BEC crossover and the disappearance of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov correlations in a spin-imbalanced one-dimensional Fermi gas

Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner, Adrian E. Feiguin, Ulrich Schollwöck +1 more

We present a numerical study of the one-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover of a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas. The crossover is described by the Bose-Fermi resonance model in a real space representation. Our main interest is in the behavior of the pair correlations, which, in the BCS limit, are of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type, while in the Bose-Einstein condensate limit, a superfluid of diatomic molecules forms that exhibits quasi-condensation at zero momentum. We use the density matrix renormalization group method to compute the phase diagram as a function of the detuning of the molecular level and the polarization. As a main result, we show that FFLO-like correlations disappear well below full polarization close to the resonance. The critical polarization depends on both the detuning and the filling.

Quasi-One-Dimensional Polarized Fermi Superfluids

Meera M. Parish, Stefan K. Baur, Erich J. Mueller +1 more

We calculate the zero-temperature (T=0) phase diagram of a polarized two-component Fermi gas in an array of weakly coupled parallel one-dimensional (1D) "tubes" produced by a two-dimensional optical lattice. Increasing the lattice strength drives a crossover from three-dimensional (3D) to 1D behavior, stabilizing the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) modulated superfluid phase. We argue that the most promising regime for observing the FFLO phase is in the quasi-1D regime, where the atomic motion is largely 1D but there is weak tunneling in the other directions that stabilizes long-range order. In the FFLO phase, we describe a phase transition where the quasiparticle spectrum changes from gapless near the 3D regime to gapped in quasi-1D.

Trapped imbalanced fermionic superfluids in one dimension: A variational approach

Kelly R. Patton, Dominique Gautreau, Stephen Kudla +1 more

We propose and analyze a variational wave function for a population-imbalanced one-dimensional Fermi gas that allows for Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type pairing correlations among the two fermion species, while also accounting for the harmonic confining potential. In the strongly interacting regime, we find large spatial oscillations of the order parameter, indicative of an FFLO state. The obtained density profiles versus imbalance are consistent with recent experimental results as well as with theoretical calculations based on combining Bethe ansatz with the local density approximation. Our variational wave function displays no signature of the FFLO state in the densities of the two fermion species. Nonetheless, the oscillations of the order parameter appear in density-density correlations, both in situ and after free expansion. Furthermore, above a critical polarization, the value of which depends on the interaction, we find the unpaired Fermi-gas state to be energetically more favorable.

The Search For FFLO in a Quasi-One-Dimensional Ultracold Fermi Gas

Jacob A. Fry

The Fulde-Ferrell Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type superconductor is an exotic form of matter known as a supersolid because it simultaneously supports superfluid and magnetic order. In both condensed matter and ultracold atomic gases, this phase has yet to be conclusively observed despite long interest in both theory and experiment. In one-dimension (1D), unlike expectations for higher dimensions, the FFLO phase is found in a large region of the phase diagram [1]. The effect of quantum and thermal fluctuations, however, are expected to be reduced in higher dimensions. These considerations motivated the proposal to search for FFLO near the 1D-3D dimensional crossover [2], which we have identified and characterized [3]. We confine a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas of lithium 6 to an array of 1D tubes using a 2D optical lattice. We bring the system into the dimensional crossover by increasing the inter-tube tunneling rate and using a Feshbach resonance to tune interactions. The periodicity of these domain walls, which depends on the magnitude of the polarization, is a definitive signature of the FFLO phase. In this work, we develop new experimental and analytical methods to extract periodic signals that, if they indeed are domain walls, lay the foundation for full confirmation of the FFLO phase. [1] Y. Effect of phase fluctuations on the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in a three-dimensional Fermi gas

Jeroen P. A. Devreese, Jacques Tempere

In ultracold Fermi gases, the effect of spin imbalance on superfluidity has been the subject of intense study. One of the reasons for this is that spin imbalance frustrates the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid pairing mechanism, in which fermions in different spin states combine into Cooper pairs with zero momentum. In 1964, it was proposed that an exotic superfluid state called the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, in which the Cooper pairs have nonzero momentum, could exist in a spin-imbalanced Fermi gas. At the saddle-point (mean-field) level, it has been shown that the FFLO state only occupies a very small sliver in the ground-state phase diagram of a three-dimensional (3D) Fermi gas. However, a question that remains to be investigated is as follows: What is the influence of phase fluctuations on the FFLO state? In this work, we show that phase fluctuations only lead to relatively small quantitative corrections to the presence of the FFLO state in the saddle-point phase diagram of a 3D spin-imbalanced Fermi gas. Starting from the partition function of the system, we calculate the effective action within the path-integral adiabatic approximation. The action is then expanded up to second order in the fluctuation field around the saddle point, leading to the fluctuation free energy. Using this free energy, we calculate corrections due to phase fluctuations to the BCS-FFLO transition in the saddle-point phase diagram. At temperatures at which the FFLO state exists, we find only small corrections to the size of the FFLO area. Our results suggest that fluctuations of the phase of the FFLO order parameter, which can be interpreted as an oscillation of its momentum vector, do not cause an instability of the FFLO state with respect to the BCS state.
