Abstract

We derive analytical solutions for the system of two ultracold spin-polarized fermions interacting in $p$ wave and confined in an axially symmetric harmonic trap. To this end we utilize $p$-wave pseudopotential with an energy-dependent scattering volume. This allows to describe the scattering in tight trapping potentials in the presence of scattering resonances. We verify predictions of the pseudopotential treatment for some model interaction potential obtaining an excellent agreement with exact energy levels. Then we turn to the experimentally relevant case of neutral atom interactions in the vicinity of a $p$-wave Feshbach resonance. In the framework of the multichannel quantum-defect theory we derive relatively simple formula for an energy-dependent scattering volume, and later we apply it to investigate the energy spectrum of trapped atoms close to the $p$-wave Feshbach resonance.

Analytical solutions for the dynamics of two trapped interacting ultracold atoms

Zbigniew Idziaszek, Tommaso Calarco

We discuss exact solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation for the system of two ultracold atoms confined in an axially symmetric harmonic potential. We investigate different geometries of the trapping potential, in particular we study the properties of eigenenergies and eigenfunctions for quasi-one-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional traps. We show that the quasi-one-dimensional and the quasi-two-dimensional regimes for two atoms can be already realized in the traps with moderately large (or small) ratios of the trapping frequencies in the axial and the transverse directions. Finally, we apply our theory to Feshbach resonances for trapped atoms. Introducing in our description an energy-dependent scattering length we calculate analytically the eigenenergies for two trapped atoms in the presence of a Feshbach resonance.

Two atoms in an anisotropic harmonic trap

Zbigniew Idziaszek, Tommaso Calarco

We consider the system of two interacting atoms confined in axially symmetric harmonic trap. Within the pseudopotential approximation, we solve the Schr\"odinger equation exactly, discussing the limits of quasi-one-and quasi-two-dimensional geometries. Finally, we discuss the application of an energy-dependent pseudopotential, which allows us to extend the validity of our results to the case of tight traps and large scattering lengths.

High-temperature thermodynamics of strongly interacting s -wave and p -wave Fermi gases in a harmonic trap

Shi-Guo Peng, Shiqun Li, P. D. Drummond +1 more

We theoretically investigate the high-temperature thermodynamics of a strongly interacting trapped Fermi gas near either $s$-wave or $p$-wave Feshbach resonances, using a second-order quantum virial expansion. The second virial coefficient is calculated based on the energy spectrum of two interacting fermions in a harmonic trap. We consider both isotropic and anisotropic harmonic potentials. For the two-fermion interaction, either $s$-wave or $p$-wave, we use a pseudopotential parametrized by a scattering length and an effective range. This turns out to be the simplest way of encoding the energy dependence of the low-energy scattering amplitude or phase shift. This treatment of the pseudopotential can be easily generalized to higher partial-wave interactions. We discuss how the second virial coefficient and thermodynamics are affected by the existence of these finite-range interaction effects. The virial expansion result for a strongly interacting $s$-wave Fermi gas has already been proved very useful. In the case of $p$-wave interactions, our results for the high-temperature equation of state are applicable to future high-precision thermodynamic measurements for a spin-polarized Fermi gas near a $p$-wave Feshbach resonance.

Pseudopotential Method for Higher Partial Wave Scattering

Zbigniew Idziaszek, Tommaso Calarco

We present a zero-range pseudopotential applicable for all partial wave interactions between neutral atoms. For p and d waves, we derive effective pseudopotentials, which are useful for problems involving anisotropic external potentials. Finally, we consider two nontrivial applications of the p-wave pseudopotential: we solve analytically the problem of two interacting spin-polarized fermions confined in a harmonic trap, and we analyze the scattering of p-wave interacting particles in a quasi-two-dimensional system.

Pseudopotential treatment of two body interactions

Krittika Kanjilal

Ultracold atomic gases have been of great theoretical and experimental interest in the last two decades. In these systems, the de Broglie wavelength of the particles is much greater than the two body van der Waals length. As a result, the details of the two body interaction potential are irrelevant for a large number of applications and the realistic two body interaction potential can be replaced by a simple finite range or zero range model potential that reproduces the scattering quantities of the full interaction potential. This thesis develops zero range pseudopotentials and applies them to trapped two-particle systems. Ultracold gases loaded into optical lattices can be used to realize two particle systems under approximately harmonic confinement. We use pseudopotentials to obtain the eigenspectrum of two particles under external harmonic confinement semi-analytically. Advancements in trapping technology have resulted in the realization of low dimensional systems. We develop pseudopotentials to treat two body interactions in one and two dimensions. We also elaborate on the physics that is unique to one and two dimensional systems. Feshbach resonances allow for the tunability of the effective two body interaction strength in the presence of a magnetic field. To model Feshbach resonances in two and three dimensions we develop coupled two channel zero range potentials. Dipole-dipole interactions in Chromium and polar molecules have been the subject of a lot of recent research. Unlike the interactions between two alkali atoms, these interactions are long range and anisotropic. We explore the scattering properties of two aligned dipoles using a simple shape dependent model potential. To understand a system two aligned dipoles under confinement, we develop a pseudopotential treatment for cylindrically symmetric interaction potentials under cylindrically symmetric harmonic confinement. This pseudopotential can be used to model any cylindrically symmetric interaction potential. Our zero range treatment describes many features of two aligned dipoles under spherically symmetric harmonic confinement accurately but breaks down when applied to two aligned dipoles under cylindrically symmetric harmonic confinement. The breakdown is unique to the long range nature of the dipole-dipole interaction and expected to be absent for short range interactions.

Nondivergent pseudopotential treatment of spin-polarized fermions under one- and three-dimensional harmonic confinement

Krittika Kanjilal, D. Blume

Atom-atom scattering of bosonic one-dimensional (1D) atoms has been modeled successfully using a zero-range $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function potential, while that of bosonic 3D atoms has been modeled successfully using Fermi-Huang's regularized $s$-wave pseudopotential. Here, we derive the eigenenergies of two spin-polarized 1D fermions under external harmonic confinement interacting through a zero-range potential, which only acts on odd-parity wave functions, analytically. We also present a divergent-free zero-range potential treatment of two spin-polarized 3D fermions under harmonic confinement. Our pseudopotential treatments are verified through numerical calculations for short-range model potentials.

We derive analytical solutions for the system of two ultracold spin-polarized fermions interacting in ppp wave and confined in an axially symmetric harmonic trap.
