Abstract

We examine a quantum memory scheme based on controllable dephasing of atomic coherence of a non-resonant, inhomogeneously broadened Raman transition. We show that it generalizes the physical conditions for time-reversible interaction between light and atomic ensembles from weak to strong fields and from linear to non-linear interactions. We also develop a unified framework for different realizations exploiting either controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening or atomic frequency combs, and discuss new aspects related to storage and manipulation of quantum states.

Quantum memory for nonstationary light fields based on controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening

Barbara Kraus, Wolfgang Tittel, N. Gisin +3 more

We propose a method for efficient storage and recall of arbitrary nonstationary light fields, such as, for instance, single photon time-bin qubits or intense fields, in optically dense atomic ensembles. Our approach to quantum memory is based on controlled, reversible, inhomogeneous broadening and relies on a hidden time-reversal symmetry of the optical Bloch equations describing the propagation of the light field. We briefly discuss experimental realizations of our proposal.

All-optical quantum storage based on spatial chirp of the control field

Xiwen Zhang, А. А. Калачев, Olga A. Kocharovskaya

We suggest an all-optical quantum memory scheme which is based on the off-resonant Raman interaction of a signal quantum field and a strong control field in a three-level atomic medium in the case where the control field has a spatially varying frequency across the beam, called a spatial chirp. We show that the effect of such a spatial chirp is analogous to the effect of a controllable reversible inhomogeneous broadening of the atomic transition used in the gradient echo memory scheme. The proposed scheme does not require temporal modulation of the control field or the atomic levels and can be realized without additional electric or magnetic fields. This means that materials demonstrating neither linear Stark nor Zeeman effects can be used and/or materials which are placed in specific external fields remain undisturbed.

An efficient quantum memory based on two-level atoms

Ivan Iakoupov, Anders Søndberg Sørensen

We propose a method to implement a quantum memory for light based on ensembles of two-level atoms. Our protocol is based on controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening (CRIB), where an external field first dephases the atomic polarization and thereby stores an incoming light pulse into collective states of the atomic ensemble, and later a reversal of the applied field leads to a rephasing of the atomic polarization and a reemission of the light. As opposed to previous proposals for CRIB-based quantum memories, we propose only applying the broadening for a short period after most of the pulse has already been absorbed by the ensemble. We show that with this procedure there exist certain modes of the incoming light field that can be stored with an efficiency approaching 100% in the limit of high optical depth and long coherence time of the atoms. These results demonstrate that it is possible to operate an efficient quantum memory without any optical control fields.

Off-resonant Raman-echo quantum memory for inhomogeneously broadened atoms in a cavity

Sergey A. Moiseev

A scheme of photon echo-based quantum memory in the optimal optical QED cavity with off-resonant Raman atomic transition is proposed. The scheme employs the atomic ensembles characterized by an optically thin resonant transition and natural inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line composed of the arbitrary narrow homogeneous spectral components. The scheme provides robust and quite simple coherent control of the light atoms dynamics that can be implemented by using an existing optical technique and opens a practical way for realization of the efficient long-lived multimode optical quantum memory.

Quantum memory protocol in QED cavity based on Photon echo

Sergey A. Moiseev

A new protocol of the optical quantum memory based on the resonant interactions of the multi atomic system with a cavity light mode is proposed. The quantum memory is realized using a controllable inversion of the inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant atomic transition and impact interaction (on request) of additional short 2 - laser pulse resonant to an adjacent atomic transition. We demonstrate that the quantum memory protocol is effective for arbitrary storage time and can be used for new quantum manipulations with transient entangled states in the field-atoms evolution. The effect of the fast absorption and emission of the light field is predicted.
