Jahn-Teller-induced Berry phase in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract

We demonstrate that Berry phases may greatly affect the dynamics of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. The effective model Hamiltonian under consideration is shown to be equivalent to the $E\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ Jahn-Teller model first introduced in molecular physics. The corresponding conical intersection is identified and the Berry phase acquired for a wave packet encircling the intersection is studied. It is found that this phase manifests itself in the density profile of the condensate, making it a directly measurable quantity via time-of-flight detection. Moreover, the non-Abelian gauge structure of the system is addressed and we verify how it affects the dynamics.

Jahn-Teller systems from a cavity QED perspective

Jonas Larson

Jahn-Teller systems and the Jahn-Teller effect are discussed in terms of cavity QED models. By expressing the field modes in a quadrature representation, it is shown that certain setups of a two-level system interacting with a bimodal cavity are described by the Jahn-Teller $E\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ Hamiltonian. We identify the corresponding adiabatic potential surfaces and the conical intersection. The effects of a nonzero geometrical Berry phase, governed by encircling the conical intersection, are studied in detail both theoretically and numerically. The numerical analysis is carried out by applying a wave packet propagation method, more commonly used in molecular or chemical physics, and analytic expressions for the characteristic time scales are presented. It is found that the collapse-revival structure is greatly influenced by the geometrical phase and as a consequence, the field intensities contain direct information about this phase. We also mention the link between the Jahn-Teller effect and the Dicke phase transition in cavity QED.

Bose-Einstein condensates with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling: An overview

Giovanni Italo Martone

Abstract Since their first realization more than a decade ago spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates have been the subject of intense theoretical and experimental investigations. Spin-orbit coupling deeply modifies the equilibrium properties of the condensate, giving rise to novel configurations such as a supersolid stripe phase and a phase-separated plane-wave state. At the level of dynamics, both the frequency and the nature of the collective modes are significantly affected by the coupling with the spin degree of freedom. Here we review some of the most relevant advances in the field and provide our perspective on possible future research directions.

Topological superfluid in a Bose-Fermi mixture with spin exchange-induced spin-orbit coupling

Chuanzhou Zhu, Li Chen, Hui Hu +2 more

We investigate the ground-state properties of a mixture of spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensate and spin-1/2 Fermi superfluid. In our system, bosons are subjected to a pair of Raman laser beams that induces spin-orbit coupling, while fermions are not coupled to the Raman laser. We show that the fermions can acquire an effective spin-orbit coupling from the spin-exchange interaction between bosons and fermions. In the regime where the boson number is more than the fermion number, we study the topological phase transition of the Fermi superfluid by monitoring the close and re-open of the energy gap, the Berry phase, and the superfluid order parameter, where the back-action to the Bose condensate is also taken into consideration. Our work provides a new way of achieve topological Fermi superfluid … The American Physical Society (APS) is a non-profit membership organization working to advance the knowledge of physics.

SPIN-ORBIT-COUPLED BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATES

Yun Li, Giovanni Italo Martone, S. Stringari

The recent realization of synthetic spin-orbit coupling represents an outstanding achievement in the physics of ultracold quantum gases. In this review we explore the properties of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate with equal Rashba and Dresselhaus strengths. This system presents a rich phase diagram, which exhibits a tricritical point separating a zero-momentum phase, a spin-polarized plane-wave phase, and a stripe phase. In the stripe phase translational invariance is spontaneously broken, in analogy with supersolids. Spin-orbit coupling also strongly affects the dynamics of the system. In particular, the excitation spectrum exhibits intriguing features, including the suppression of the sound velocity, the emergence of a roton minimum in the plane-wave phase, and the appearance of a double gapless band structure in the stripe phase. Finally, we discuss a combined procedure to make the stripes visible and stable, thus allowing for a direct experimental detection.

Momentum space Aharonov-Bohm interferometry in Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Junpeng Hou, Xi-Wang Luo, Kuei Sun +1 more

The recent experimental realization of synthetic Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) paves a new avenue for exploring topological phases in ultracold atoms. The unequivocal characterization of such topological physics requires a simple scheme for measuring the Berry phase originating from the SOC. Here we propose a scheme to realize momentum space Aharonov-Bohm interferometry in a Rashba spin-orbit–coupled Bose-Einstein condensate through a sudden change of the in-plane Zeeman field. We find that the π Berry phase for the Dirac point of the Rashba SOC is directly revealed by a robust dark interference fringe in the momentum space. An external perpendicular Zeeman field opens a band gap at the Dirac point, which reduces the Berry phase along the Rashba ring, leading to lower brightness of the interference fringe. We develop a variational model with semiclassical equations of motion of essential dynamical quantities for describing the interference process, yielding real and momentum space trajectories and geometric phases agreeing with the real-time simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our study may pave the way for the experimental detection of Berry phases in ultracold atomic systems and further exploration of momentum space interference dynamics.

Spin-orbit-coupling-induced phase separation in trapped Bose gases

Zhiqian Gui, Zhenming Zhang, Jin Dong Su +2 more

In a trapped spin-$1/2$ Bose-Einstein condensate with miscible interactions, a two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling can introduce an unconventional spatial separation between the two components. We reveal the physical mechanism of such a spin-orbit-coupling-induced phase separation. Detailed features of the phase separation are identified in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. We further analyze differences of phase separation in Rashba and anisotropic spin-orbit-coupled Bose gases. An adiabatic splitting dynamics is proposed as an application of the phase separation.
