Coherent transition between adjacent Zeeman sublevels in an alkali-metal atom without populating other sublevels

Huidong Kim, Hyok Sang Han, Jinsin Park +2 more

We report on a spectroscopic method to coherently drive a selective transition between two levels in a ladder system of equally spaced energy levels. A typical example of such a ladder system is a set of Zeeman sublevels in the same hyperfine level of a ground-state alkali-metal atom. The scheme is based on a stimulated Raman transition with a Zeeman sublevel belonging to the other hyperfine level as an intermediate state. We identify quantization conditions on a single-photon detuning and Rabi frequencies for either a $\ensuremath{\pi}/2$ or a $\ensuremath{\pi}$ transition between adjacent Zeeman sublevels without populating the intermediate state. We experimentally demonstrate the scheme using lithium atoms in an optical trap. Application of the scheme includes manipulating a pair of Zeeman sublevels as a quantum bit or probing Zeeman coherence established by coherent population trapping.

Efficiency of a 85Rb Filter in Optical Pumping of 87Rb

P. Davidovits, N. Knable

The population of the F=2 sublevels of the 2S½ state of 87Rb may be enhanced at the expense of the F=1 levels by illuminating the 87Rb with 87Rb resonance radiation which is first passed through a 85Rb cell, thus removing the component of light which stimulates transitions from the F=2 levels. The effectiveness of the 85Rb cell in transmitting the hyperfine line which produces population inversion while rejecting the depumping lines has been measured.

Imaging velocity selective resonances in a magnetic field

Fredrik K. Fatemi, Matthew L. Terraciano, Zachary Dutton +1 more

We demonstrate techniques for imaging both magnetic fields and magnetic sublevel distributions using velocity-selective Raman transitions in cold 87Rb and 85Rb ensembles. When an expanding atom cloud is exposed to counterpropagating laser beams, resonant atom trajectories undergoing Raman transitions are perturbed and result in distinctive features in images of the expanded cloud. If the counterpropagating laser fields couple magnetic sublevels in different hyperfine manifolds, the images provide a spectrograph of sublevel occupation. The techniques are simple to implement and provide a useful, rapid diagnostic tool for cold atom experiments.
