Quantum Brownian motion under rapid periodic forcing

Abstract

We study the steady state behaviour of a confined quantum Brownian particle subjected to a space-dependent, rapidly oscillating time-periodic force. To leading order in the period of driving, the result of the oscillating force is an effective static potential which has a quantum dissipative contribution, $V_{QD}$, which adds on to the classical result. This is shown using a coherent state representation of bath oscillators. $V_{QD}$ is evaluated exactly in the case of an Ohmic dissipation bath. It is strongest for intermediate values of the damping, where it can have pronounced effects.

Quantum Brownian motion for periodic coupling to an Ohmic bath

Jyrki Piilo, Sabrina Maniscalco, Kalle‐Antti Suominen

We show theoretically how the periodic coupling between an engineered reservoir and a quantum Brownian particle leads to the formation of a dynamical steady-state which is characterized by an effective temperature above the temperature of the environment. The average steady-state energy of the system has a higher value than expected from the environmental properties. The system experiences repeatedly a non-Markovian behavior---as a consequence the corresponding effective decay for long evolution times is always on average stronger than the Markovian one. We also highlight the consequences of the scheme for the Zeno-anti-Zeno crossover which depends, in addition to the periodicity $\ensuremath{\tau}$, also on the total evolution time of the system.

QUANTUM BROWNIAN MOTION IN A PERIODIC POTENTIAL: THE PATH INTEGRAL FOR A SUPER-OHMIC BATH

Manuel Arrayás

The problem of a Brownian particle in a super-Ohmic bath under the effect of a periodic tilted potential is studied. The quantum dissipative dynamics is formulated in terms of the influence functional and the path integrals are calculated explicitly and analytically.

Exact dynamics of a quantum dissipative system in a constant external field

Chang-Pu Sun, Li-Hua Yu

We study the quantum dynamics of the simplest dissipative system, a particle moving in a constant external field and interacting with a bath of harmonic oscillators with Ohmic spectral density. Applying the main idea and methods developed in our recent work [L. H. Yu and C. P. Sun, Phys. Rev. A 49, 592 (1994)] to this system, we obtain the simple and exact solutions for the coordinate operator of the system in the Heisenberg picture and the wave function of the composite system of the system and the bath in the Schr\"odinger picture. An effective Hamiltonian for the dissipative system is explicitly derived from these solutions. The meaning of the wave function described by this effective Hamiltonian is clarified by analyzing the effect of the Brownian motion. In particular, the general effective Hamiltonian for an arbitrary potential is directly derived with this method for the case when the Brownian motion can be ignored. Using this effective Hamiltonian, we show an interesting result that the dissipation suppresses the wave-packet spreading.

Brownian parametric quantum oscillator with dissipation

Christine Zerbe, Peter Hänggi A

We study the quantum fluctuational properties of a parametric oscillator with and without coupling to an Ohmic environment. After considering the momentum and coordinate variances as a function of initial squeezing for the undamped dynamics, we invoke the functional integral method to derive the fully exact reduced density matrix for parametric dissipative quantum Brownian motion, covering the whole temperature regime from T=0 up to the classical limit at room temperatures. Moreover, we present the exact result for the quantum master equation for both the density matrix and the corresponding Wigner function. The time evolution of the covariance matrix elements of damped quantum fluctuations is studied numerically. These variances undergo within the regime of global stability asymptotic, periodic oscillations. As an interesting result, we find that the minima of these oscillations fall below the corresponding thermal equilibrium values.

Generalized diffusion of quantum Brownian motion

Pedro J. Colmenares

This article discusses the numerical result predicted by the quantum Langevin equation of the generalized diffusion function of a Brownian particle immersed in an Ohmic quantum bath of harmonic oscillators. The time dependence of the standard deviation of the reduced Wigner function of the system, obtained by integrating the whole function in the momentum space, is determined as well. The complexity of the equations leads to resort to a much simpler calculation based in the position correlation function. They are done for the three possible regimes of the system, namely, periodic, aperiodic, and overdamped. It is found in the periodic case that the generalized diffusion is a discontinuous function exhibiting negative values during short time periods of time. This counterintuitive result, found theoretically in other systems and waiting for its experimental confirmation, can be perfectly explained in the framework of the quantum Langevin equation. Its oscillatory behavior is primordially due to the response to the external field while its quantum origin contributes only in its magnitude. The results are compared to those of the continuum limit which exhibits similar behavior.

Damped periodically driven quantum transport in bistable systems

B. OELSCHäGEL, Thomas Dittrich, Peter Hänggi A

The quantum dynamics of a quartic double well, subjected to a harmonically oscillating field, is studied in the framework of the Floquet formalism. The modifications of the familiar tunneling process due to driving and dissipation are investigated numerically and explained in terms of the quasienergy spectrum. In absence of dissipation, there is a onedimensional manifold in the parameter space spanned by amplitude and frequency of the driving force, where tunneling is almost completely suppressed by the coherent driving. The influence of dissipation is described on basis of the reduced density matrix in the Floquet representation. In particular, we consider the effect of weak Ohmic damping. In the classical limit, this system corresponds to a damped bistable Duffing oscillator
