Abstract

We investigate the ground-state properties of the one-dimensional two-band Hubbard model with different bandwidths. The density-matrix renormalization group method is applied to calculate the averaged electron occupancies $n$ as a function of the chemical potential $μ$. Both at quarter and half fillings, "charge plateaux" appear in the $n$-$μ$ plot, where $dμ/dn$ diverges and the Mott insulating states are realized. To see how the orbital polarization in the one-quarter charge plateau develops, we apply the second-order perturbation theory from the strong-coupling limit at quarter filling. The resultant Kugel-Khomskii spin-orbital model includes a $magnetic$ field coupled to orbital pseudo-spins. This field originates from the discrepancy between the two bandwidths and leads to a finite orbital pseudo-spin magnetization.

One-dimensional Hubbard model at quarter filling on periodic potentials

C. Schuster, Udo Schwingenschlögl

Using the Hubbard chain at quarter filling as a model system, we study the ground state properties of highly doped antiferromagnets. In particular, the Hubbard chain at quarter filling is unstable against $2{k}_{F}$- and $4{k}_{F}$-periodic potentials, leading to a large variety of charge and spin ordered ground states. Employing the density matrix renormalization group method, we compare the energy gain of the ground state induced by different periodic potentials. For interacting systems the lowest energy is found for a $2{k}_{F}$-periodic magnetic field, resulting in a band insulator with spin gap. For strong interaction, the $4{k}_{F}$-periodic potential leads to a half-filled Heisenberg chain and thus to a Mott insulating state without spin gap. This ground state is more stable than the band insulating state caused by any non-magnetic $2{k}_{F}$-periodic potential. Adding more electrons, a cluster-like ordering is preferred.

Correlation-driven Lifshitz transition and orbital order in a two-band Hubbard model

F. Grandi, A. Amaricci, Massimo Capone +1 more

We study by dynamical mean-field theory the ground state of a quarter-filled Hubbard model of two bands with different bandwidths. At half-filling, this model is known to display an orbital selective Mott transition, with the narrower band undergoing Mott localization while the wider one being still itinerant. At quarter-filling, the physical behavior is different and to some extent reversed. The interaction generates an effective crystal field splitting, absent in the Hamiltonian, that tends to empty the narrower band in favor of the wider one, which also become more correlated than the former at odds with the orbital selective paradigm. Upon increasing the interaction, the depletion of the narrower band can continue till it empties completely and the system undergoes a topological Lifshitz transition into a half-filled single-band metal that eventually turns insulating. Alternatively, when the two bandwidths are not too different, a first order Mott transition intervenes before the Lifshitz's one. The properties of the Mott insulator are significantly affected by the interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Nature of the insulating phases in the half-filled ionic Hubbard model

A. P. Kampf, Michael Sekania, G. I. Japaridze +1 more

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional 'ionic' Hubbard model with an alternating periodic potential at half-filling by numerical diagonalization of finite systems with the Lanczos and density matrix renormalization group methods. We identify an insulator–insulator phase transition from a band to a correlated insulator with simultaneous charge and bond-charge order. The transition point is characterized by the vanishing of the optical excitation gap while simultaneously the charge and spin gaps remain finite and equal. Indications for a possible second transition into a Mott-insulator phase are discussed.

Ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with orbital degeneracy: From low to high electron density

Harumi Sakamoto, Tsutomu Momoi, Kenn Kubo

We studied ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with doubly degenerate atomic orbitals by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method and obtained the ground-state phase diagrams. It was found that ferromagnetism is stable from low to high $(0<n<1.75)$ electron density when the interactions are sufficiently strong. The quasi-long-range order of triplet superconductivity coexists with the ferromagnetic order for a strong Hund coupling region, where the interorbital interaction ${U}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{-}J$ is attractive. At quarter-filling $(n=1),$ the insulating ferromagnetic state appears, accompanying orbital quasi-long-range order. For low densities $(n<1),$ ferromagnetism occurs owing to the ferromagnetic exchange interaction caused by virtual hoppings of electrons, the same as in the quarter-filled system. This comes from separation of the charge and spin-orbital degrees of freedom in the strong-coupling limit. This ferromagnetism is fragile against variation of band structure. For high densities $(n>1),$ the phase diagram of the ferromagnetic phase is similar to that obtained in infinite dimensions. In this case, the double exchange mechanism is operative for stabilizing the ferromagnetic order and this long-range order is robust against variation of the band dispersion. A partially polarized state appears in the density region $1.68\ensuremath{\lesssim}n\ensuremath{\lesssim}1.75$ and phase separation occurs for n just below the half-filling $(n=2).$

Ground-state and spectral properties of an asymmetric Hubbard ladder

Anas Abdelwahab, Eric Jeckelmann, Martin Hohenadler

We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely, a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density-matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge gaps induced by an effective rung exchange coupling is found at moderate interchain hopping or strong Hubbard interaction. Third, a spin-gapped paramagnetic Mott insulator with incommensurate excitations and pairing of doped charges is observed at intermediate values of the rung hopping and the interaction. Fourth, the usual correlated band insulator is recovered for large rung hopping. We show that the wave numbers of the lowest single-particle excitations are different in each insulating phase. In particular, the three gapped phases exhibit markedly different spectral functions. We discuss the relevance of asymmetric two-leg ladder systems as models for atomic wires deposited on a substrate.

Correlation-induced band suppression in the two-orbital Hubbard model

Evgeny A. Plekhanov, Adolfo Avella, Francesco Paolo Mancini +1 more

The orbital degrees of freedom are of vital importance in explanation of various phenomena. Among them is the orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT), which is thought to occur in several materials as Ca 2− x Sr x RuO 4 and La n+1 Ni n O 3 n +1 . OSMT is usually studied in the infinite-dimension limit, and for the time being, it is not clear if it could survive in one-dimensional (1D) case. There exist two scenarios for the OSMT: upon increasing the interaction in a two-band system i) one of the bands becomes insulating, while the other remains metallic and ii) one of the bands becomes empty, while the other may eventually undergo a single-band Mott insulator transition. In this work, we present a preliminary study of the two-orbital Hubbard model by means of Density Matrix Renormalization Group in 1D at quarter-filling, where the second scenario seems to be realized. In particular, we study the orbital densities, double occupancies and form-factors also in the case of finite inter-orbital inter-site hopping.
