On Bell, Suarez-Scarani, and Leggett experiments: Reply to a comment, and proposal for a new experiment

Abstract

It is shown that the before-before (or Suarez-Scarani) experiment refutes hidden variable models with a deterministic ("realistic") nonlocal part, and the experimental violation of Leggett-type inequalities models with a random nonlocal part and a biased random local one. Therefore the claim that Groeblacher et al. present "an experimental test of nonlocal realism" [Nature, 446, 871-875 (2007)] is misleading, and Marek Zukowski's comment [arXiv:0809.0072v1] misses the point. A new experiment is proposed.

A non-local hidden-variable model that violates Leggett-type inequalities

F. De Zela

Recent experiments of Gröblacher et al proved the violation of a Leggett-type inequality that was claimed to be valid for a broad class of non-local hidden-variable theories. The impossibility of constructing a non-local and realistic theory, unless it entails highly counterintuitive features, seems thus to have been experimentally proved. This would bring us close to a definite refutation of realism. Indeed, realism was proved to be also incompatible with locality, according to a series of experiments testing Bell inequalities. The present paper addresses the said experiments of Gröblacher et al and presents an explicit, contextual and realistic, model that reproduces the predictions of quantum mechanics. It thus violates the Leggett-type inequality that was established with the aim of ruling out a supposedly broad class of non-local models. We can thus conclude that plausible contextual, realistic, models are still tenable. This restates the possibility of a future completion of quantum mechanics by a realistic and contextual theory which is not in a class containing only highly counterintuitive models. The class that was ruled out by the experiments of Gröblacher et al is thus proved to be a limited one, arbitrarily separating models that physically belong in the same class.

A Criticism of the article "An experimental test of non-local realism"

Daniel V. Tausk

I make some critical comments on the article "An experimental test of non-local realism", by S. Groblacher, T. Paterek, R. Kaltenbaek, C. Brukner, M. Zukowski, M. Aspelmeyer, & A. Zeilinger, Nature 446, p. 871-875 (2007). This article makes incorrect claims concerning Bell's theorem. Moreover, I point to the fact that a hypothesis referred to as "realism" in the article (Groblacher et al.) is not used in the deduction of Leggett's inequality.

Comment on "Quantum theory cannot be extended" [arXiv:1005.5173v1]: Falsification of non-covariant extensions requires the before-before experiment

Antoine Suárez

The Suarez-Scarani model is a non-covariant (frame-dependent) relativistic (time-ordered causal) nonlocal extension of quantum theory, which is not refuted by the experiments proposed in Reference [arXiv:1005.5173v1]. The covariant extensions considered in this Reference are actually self-contradictory and do not require experimental falsification.

A simple proof of a key inequality required by the paper's analysis is presented. An introductory section discussing the paper's setup may be helpful to some readers. An alternative statistical analysis is suggested.

Time and nonlocal realism: Consequences of the before-before experiment

Antoine Suárez

It is argued that recent experiments refuting nonlocal realism, can also be considered as experiments refuting time-ordered nonlocality and, hence, confirming the result of the before-before experiment. However, the before-before experiment provides a broader refutation because it also falsifies the testable relativistic version of Bohm's nonlocal model. All this stresses the interest of a new before-before experiment demonstrating together the failure of time-ordered nonlocality and the violation of the Leggett's inequality.
