Controlling the population imbalance of a Bose-Einstein condensate by a symmetry-breaking driving field

Abstract

Nonlinear Floquet states associated with a symmetry-breaking driving field are exploited to control the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. The population imbalance between the two wells is shown to be controllable by slowly tuning system parameters along a closed path. The results extend symmetry-breaking-based quantum control to many-body systems on the mean-field level and extend navigation of linear Floquet states to navigation of nonlinear Floquet states.

Symmetry-breaking and symmetry-restoring dynamics of a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double well

Indubala I. Satija, Radha Balakrishnan, Phillip Naudus +3 more

We study the coherent nonlinear tunneling dynamics of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential. We demonstrate the existence of a type of mode associated with the ``swapping'' of the two species in the two wells of the potential. In contrast to the symmetry-breaking macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) solutions, the swapping modes correspond to the tunneling dynamics that preserves the symmetry of the double-well potential. As a consequence of two distinct types of broken-symmetry MQST phases where the two species localize in different potential wells or coexist in the same well, the corresponding symmetry-restoring swapping modes result in dynamics where the two species either avoid or chase each other. In view of the possibility to control the interaction between the species, the binary mixture offers a very robust system to observe these novel effects as well as the phenomena of Josephson oscillations and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes.

Asymptotic population imbalance of an ultracold bosonic ensemble in a driven double well

Jie Chen, Aritra K. Mukhopadhyay, Peter Schmelcher

We demonstrate that an ultracold many-body bosonic ensemble confined in a one-dimensional double-well potential exhibits a population imbalance between the two wells at large timescales, when the depth of the wells is modulated by a time-dependent driving force. The specific form of the driving force is shown to break spatial parity and time-reversal symmetries, which leads to such an asymptotic population imbalance (API). The value of the API can be flexibly controlled by changing the phase of the driving force and the total number of particles. While the API is highly sensitive to the initial state in the few-particle regime, this dependence on the initial state is lost as we approach the classical limit of large particle numbers. We perform a Floquet analysis in the few-particle regime and an analysis based on a driven classical nonrigid pendulum in the many-particle regime. Although the obtained API values in the many-particle regime agree very well with those obtained in the classical limit, we show that there exists a significant disagreement in the corresponding real-time population imbalance due to quantum correlations.

Nonlinear Floquet states and quasienergies of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a driven double-well potential

Qiongtao Xie, Wenhua Hai

We investigate nonlinear Floquet states and quasienergies of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential subject to a high-frequency driving field. A multiple time scale method is used to obtain the nonlinear Floquet states and quasienergies in both weak and strong nonlinearity regimes. It is shown that there are more nonlinear Floquet states without linear counterparts in the strong nonlinearity regime than in the weak nonlinearity regime, and they are phase-locked to an integer multiple of the external driving frequency. The validity of the effective description in the two different regimes is discussed. The stability criterion for these nonlinear Floquet states is found analytically and confirmed numerically.

Dynamical control of nonlinear symmetry breaking under decoherence

Nir Bar‐Gill, Gershon Kurizki, Boris A. Malomed +1 more

We propose a control mechanism for the stabilization of symmetry-broken modes in Bose-Einstein condensates and optical beams trapped in double-well potentials in the presence of symmetric or asymmetric noise. The control, based on periodic $\ensuremath{\pi}$ shifts of the phase in one well, is demonstrated for solitons and in the two-mode approximation. The latter setting is considered in both the mean-field and quantum (Bose-Hubbard) regimes.

Time-dependent self-trapping of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential

B. Cui, L. C. Wang, X. X. Yi

Based on the mean-field approximation and a phase-space analysis, we discuss the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a double-well potential. The condensates are found to be trapped in the time-dependent eigenstates of the effective Hamiltonian; we refer to this effect as time-dependent self-trapping of BECs. By comparison of this self-trapping with the adiabatic evolution, we find that adiabatic evolution beyond the traditional adiabatic condition can be achieved in BECs. Furthermore, the population imbalance of the BECs in the wells can be controlled by manipulating the atom-atom couplings and the driving field. The fixed points for the system are also calculated and discussed.

Dynamical control of particle jets from a driven condensate in a one-dimensional lattice with double-well potential

Z. Li, L. Q. Lai

We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double-well potential of a one-dimensional lattice, where the interatomic interactions are periodically modulated in time. In the typical case of a symmetric double-well, we observe collective particle emission under resonant driving, where the excitation regimes are explicitly constrained by the interplay between the drive strength and the hopping amplitude. By introducing a depth asymmetry between the wells, we find that moderate bias specifically enhances the emission rate, while large asymmetry suppresses it. The particle jets can be further controlled by modulating the hopping amplitudes, where the emission is weakened for finite hopping imbalances. These results outline the roles of asymmetry and external driving in precisely manipulating quantum many-body transport, and may offer insights into the design of atomtronic devices.
