Universal entangler with photon pairs in arbitrary states

Abstract

We propose a setup that transforms a photon pair in arbitrary rank-four mixed state, which could also be unknown, to a Bell state. The setup involves two linear optical circuits processing the individual photons and a parity gate working with weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity. By the photon number resolving detection on one of the output quantum bus or communication beams, the setup will realize a near deterministic transformation to a Bell state for every entangling attempt. With the simple threshold detectors, on the other hand, the system can still reach a considerable success probability of 50% per try. The decoherence effect caused by photon absorption losses in the operation is also discussed.

Universal discriminator for completely unknown optical qubits

Bing He, János A. Bergou, Yuhang Ren

We propose an experimental setup that is capable of unambiguously discriminating any pair of linearly independent single photon polarization qubits, about which we do not have any knowledge except that an extra pair of these unknown states are provided as the reference. This setup, which is constructed with optical controlled-NOT (CNOT) gates, weak cross Kerr nonlinearities, Bell state analyzers, and other linear optical elements, transforms the unknown triple photon input states to the corresponding single photon states to be deterministically processed by a linear optics circuit. The optimal discrimination of the unknown states is achieved by this setup.

Scheme for generation of three-photon entangled W state assisted by cross-Kerr nonlinearity and quantum dot

Jino Heo, Changho Hong, Seong Gon Choi +1 more

We represent an optical scheme using cross-Kerr nonlinearities (XKNLs) and quantum dot (QD) within a single-sided optical cavity (QD-cavity system) to generate three-photon entangled W state containing entanglement against loss of one photon of them. To generate W state (three-photon) with robust entanglement against loss of one photon, we utilize effects of optical nonlinearities in XKNLs (as quantum controlled operations) and QD-cavity system (as a parity operation) with linearly optical devices. In our scheme, the nonlinear (XKNL) gate consists of weak XKNLs, quantum bus beams, and photon-number-resolving measurement to realize controlled-unitary gate between two photons while another nonlinear (QD) gate employs interactions of photons and an electron of QD confined within a single-sided optical cavity for implementation of parity gate. Subsequently, for the efficiency and experimental feasibility of our scheme generating W state, we analyze the immunity of the controlled-unitary gate using XKNLs against decoherence effect and reliable performance of parity gate using QD-cavity system.

Entanglement generation with coherent states using cross-Kerr nonlinearity

Si Yu Song, Shuhao Wang, Guo Fu Xu +1 more

We propose methods for generating Bell-type entangled coherent states for quantum information processing. The protocols are completed using linear optical elements, single-photon detectors, and cross-Kerr nonlinearity. We investigate the decoherence effect on our protocols; photon loss is found to affect only the probability, not the fidelity, of the generation process. The entanglement of the generated entangled states is also analyzed using concurrence. Finally, the feasibility of our scheme is discussed using the continuous-time cross-phase modulation model. In the weak nonlinearity region, on the condition that θ2|αp|2∼1, θ≪1, and σ2≪1, our scheme is applicable theoretically.

Schemes for entanglement concentration of two unknown partially entangled states with cross-Kerr nonlinearity

Wei Xiong, Liu Ye

We propose practical schemes for concentrating entanglement of a pair of unknown partially entangled Bell states and three-photon W states with cross-Kerr nonlinearity. In these schemes, utilizing local operations and classical communication, two separated parties can obtain one maximally entangled photon pair from two previously shared partially entangled photon pairs, and three separated parties can obtain one maximally entangled three-photon W state and a maximally entangled cluster state from two identical partially entangled three-photon W states with a certain success probability. Finally, we discuss the influence of sources of error and decoherence on the schemes. The proposed setup only employs some linear optical elements and the cross-Kerr medium, which greatly reduces the difficulty of experimental realization. These schemes are feasible with current experimental technology.

Nearly deterministic preparation of the perfect W state with weak cross-Kerr nonlinearities

Li Dong, Jun-Xi Wang, Qingyang Li +5 more

Relying on weak cross-Kerr nonlinearities, we propose a nearly deterministic generation scheme of the three-photon polarization-entangled perfect $W$ state which can be applied to the perfect teleportation of an unknown single-photon state and has robust entanglement against the loss of one photon of them. Three photons entangle together by virtue of the bus function of the coherent state serving as the intermediate among them. In the scheme, three processes are executed successively and two kinds of modules are inserted into the circuit, where the homodyne measurement and the photon number measurement are aptly performed. By means of classical feedforward techniques, single-photon unitary transformation operations are performed on the corresponding photons based on the obtained measurement outcomes, by which the generation efficiency of the perfect $W$ state aims to nearly unity. Moreover, some currently available optical elements are applied in the generation process, which offer facilities for the practical implementation.

Local conversion of four Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen photon pairs into four-photon polarization-entangled decoherence-free states with non-photon-number-resolving detectors

Hong‐Fu Wang, Shou Zhang, Ai‐Dong Zhu +2 more

We propose a linear-optics-based scheme for local conversion of four Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen photon pairs distributed among five parties into four-photon polarization-entangled decoherence-free states using local operations and classical communication. The proposed setup involves simple linear optical elements and non-photon-number-resolving detectors that can only distinguish between the presence and absence of photons, and no information on the exact number of photons can be obtained. This greatly simplifies the experimental realization for linear optical quantum computation and quantum information processing.
