Dissipative dynamics of a two-level system resonantly coupled to a harmonic mode

Abstract

We propose an approximation scheme to describe the dynamics of the spin-boson model when the spectral density of the environment shows a peak at a characteristic frequency $Ω$ which can be very close (or even equal) to the spin Zeeman frequency $Δ$. Mapping the problem onto a two-state system (TSS) coupled to a harmonic oscillator (HO) with frequency $ω_0$ we show that the representation of displaced HO states provides an appropriate basis to truncate the Hilbert space of the TSS-HO system and therefore a better picture of the system dynamics. We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the TSS-HO system, and show it furnishes a very good approximation for the system dynamics even when its two subsystems are moderately coupled. Finally, assuming the regime of weak HO-bath coupling and low temperatures, we are able to analytically evaluate the dissipative TSS dynamics.

Dynamics of a qubit coupled to a broadened harmonic mode at finite detuning

Francesco Nesi, Milena Grifoni, Elisabetta Paladino

We study the dynamics of a symmetric two-level system strongly coupled to a broadened harmonic mode. Upon mapping the problem on to a spin–boson model with peaked spectral density, we show how analytic solutions can be obtained, at arbitrary detuning and finite temperatures, in the case of large Q -factors of the oscillator. One, two or more dominating oscillation frequencies of the two-level particle can be observed as a consequence of the entanglement with the oscillator. Our approximated analytical solution agrees well with numerical predictions obtained within the non-interacting blip approximation.

Dissipative dynamics of a biased qubit coupled to a harmonic oscillator: Analytical results beyond the rotating wave approximation

Johannes Hausinger, Milena Grifoni

We study the dissipative dynamics of a biased two-level system (TLS) coupled to a harmonic oscillator (HO), the latter interacting with an Ohmic environment. Using Van-Vleck perturbation theory and going to second order in the coupling between TLS and HO, we show how the Hamiltonian of the TLS-HO system can be diagonalized analytically. Our model represents an improvement to the usually used Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian as an initial rotating wave approximation is avoided. By assuming a weak coupling to the thermal bath, analytical expressions for the time evolution of the populations of the TLS are\nfound: the population is characterized by a multiplicity of damped oscillations together with a complex relaxation dynamics towards thermal equilibrium. The long time evolution is characterized by a single relaxation rate, which is largest at resonance and whose expression can be given in closed analytic form.

Dynamics of a spin-boson model with structured spectral density

Arzu Kurt, Resul Eryiğit

We report the results of a study of the dynamics of a two-state system coupled to an environment with peaked spectral density. An exact analytical expression for the bath correlation function is obtained. Validity range of various approximations to the correlation function for calculating the population difference of the system are discussed as function of tunneling splitting, oscillator frequency, coupling constant, damping rate and the temperature of the bath. An exact expression for the population difference for a limited range of parameters, is derived.

Spin–spin model for two-level system/bath problems: A numerical study

Andrei A. Golosov, Stefan I. Tsonchev, Philip Pechukas +1 more

We study a new model for treating quantum dissipative systems, in which the bath is modeled as a collection of spins coupled to the system of interest. We develop a quasiclassical method to study this model, approximating the quantum Heisenberg equations by the classical ones, supplemented with stochastic initial conditions carefully chosen so that the results obtained from the classical equations are as close as possible to the quantum results. Using this method we compare the dynamics of such a spin–spin system with that of a spin–boson system, in which the bath is modeled as a collection of harmonic oscillators. We verify numerically that when the system-bath coupling is spread over many bath spins (the Brownian motion limit), the spin–spin model can be mapped on the spin–boson model (although with a temperature dependent spectral density). We also demonstrate that the two dissipative models are qualitatively very different in a non-Brownian motion regime.
