Magnetization and Spin Excitations of Non-Abelian Quantum Hall States

Abstract

Significant insights into non-Abelian quantum Hall states are obtained from studying special multiparticle interaction Hamiltonians, whose unique ground states are the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states for the case of spinless electrons. We generalize this approach to include the electronic spin-1/2 degree of freedom. We demonstrate that in the absence of Zeeman splitting, the ground states of such Hamiltonians have large degeneracies and very rich spin structures. The spin structure of the ground states and low-energy excitations can be understood based on an emergent SU(3) symmetry for the case corresponding to the Moore-Read state. These states with different spin quantum numbers represent non-Abelian quantum Hall states with different magnetizations, whose quasihole properties are likely to be similar to those of their spin-polarized counterparts.

Matrix model for non-Abelian quantum Hall states

Nick Dorey A, David Tong, Carl Turner

We propose a matrix quantum mechanics for a class of non-Abelian quantum Hall states. The model describes electrons which carry an internal $\text{SU}(p)$ spin. The ground states of the matrix model include spin-singlet generalizations of the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states and, in general, lie in a class previously introduced by Blok and Wen. The effective action for these states is a $\text{U}(p)$ Chern-Simons theory. We show how the matrix model can be derived from quantization of the vortices in this Chern-Simons theory and how the matrix model ground states can be reconstructed as correlation functions in the boundary WZW model.

Edge Excitations and Non-Abelian Statistics in the Moore-Read State: A Numerical Study in the Presence of Coulomb Interaction and Edge Confinement

Xin Wan, Kun Yang, Edward H. Rezayi

We study the ground state and low-energy excitations of fractional quantum Hall systems on a disk at a filling fraction nu = 5/2, with Coulomb interaction and a background confining potential. We find the Moore-Read ground state is stable within a finite but narrow window in parameter space. The corresponding low-energy excitations contain a fermionic branch and a bosonic branch, with widely different velocities. A short-range repulsive potential can stabilize a charge +e/4 quasihole at the center, leading to a different edge excitation spectrum due to the change of boundary conditions for Majorana fermions, clearly indicating the non-Abelian nature of the quasihole.

Possible non-Abelian Moore-Read state in double-layer bosonic fractional quantum Hall system

W. Zhu, Shou-Shu Gong, D. N. Sheng +1 more

Identifying and understanding interacting systems that can host non-Abelian topological phases with fractionalized quasiparticles have attracted intense attention in the past 20 years. Theoretically, it is possible to realize a rich variety of such states by coupling together two Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states through gapping out part of the low-energy degrees of freedom. So far, there are some indications, but no robust examples have been established in bilayer systems for realizing the non-Abelian state in the past. Here, we present a phase diagram of a double-layer bosonic FQH system based on exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, which demonstrates a potential regime with the emergence of a non-Abelian bosonic Moore-Read state. Starting from the Abelian phase with fourfold topological degeneracy at weak coupling, with an increase of interlayer tunneling, we find an intermediate regime with a threefold ground-state degeneracy and a finite drag Hall conductance. We find different topological sectors consistent with the Moore-Read state by inserting different fluxes in an adiabatic DMRG study. We also extract the modular $\mathcal{S}$ matrix, which supports the emergence of a non-Abelian Ising anyon quasiparticle in this system.

A general approach to quantum Hall hierarchies

J Suorsa, S Viefers, T. H. Hansson

The Abelian hierarchy of quantum Hall states accounts for most of the states in the lowest Landau level, and there is evidence of a similar hierarchy of non-Abelian states emanating from the ν=5/2 Moore–Read state in the second Landau level. Extending a recently developed formalism for hierarchical quasihole condensation, we present a theory that allows for the explicit construction of the ground state wave function, as well as its quasiparticle excitations, for any state based on the Abelian hierarchy. We relate our construction to structures in rational conformal field theory and stress the importance of using coherent state wave functions, which allows us to formulate an extension of the bulk–edge correspondence that was conjectured by Moore and Read. Finally, we study the proposed ground state wave functions in the limiting geometry of a thin torus and argue that they coincide with the known exact results.
