The Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for Transformation from Dirac Representation to Foldy-Wouthuysen Representation

Abstract

The paper describes conditions for transformation from the Dirac representation to the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. The necessary condition is the block-diagonal transformation of Hamiltonian relative to the upper and lower components of the wave function. The sufficient condition is the wave function transformation law described by relation (6). It has been demonstrated that the unitary transformations offered by the authors of the papers [14], [15], [16], [17] do not satisfy the sufficiency condition (6) and, hence, they are not the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations. In applications, the matrix elements of any operator in the FW representation can be calculated, according to (6), using the normalized two-component wave functions in the Dirac representation known for the given problem.

Foldy–Wouthuysen wave functions and conditions of transformation between Dirac and Foldy–Wouthuysen representations

V. P. Neznamov, A. J. Silenko

The block diagonalization of the Hamiltonian is not sufficient for the transformation to the Foldy–Wouthuysen (FW) representation. The conditions enabling the transition from the Dirac representation to the FW one are formulated and proven. The connection between wave functions in the two representations is derived. The results obtained allow calculating expectation values of operators corresponding to main classical quantities.

Connection between wave functions in the Dirac and Foldy-Wouthuysen representations

A. J. Silenko

When the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation is exact and the particle energy is positive, upper spinors in the Dirac and FW representations differ only by a constant factor, and lower spinors in the FW representation are zero. Deducing FW wave eigenfunctions directly from Dirac wave eigenfunctions allows one to use the FW representation to calculate expectation values of needed operators and to derive quantum and semiclassical equations of motion.

Unitary transformation for new diagonalization of Dirac Hamiltonian

Hong-Yi Fan, Ze Wu

The Foldy–Wouthuysen transformation was originally developed to elucidate the nonrelativistic limit of the Dirac equation. In this paper, we introduce a novel unitary transformation for the Hamiltonian of the Dirac equation. The unitary transformation operator is given by [Formula: see text] which results in the diagonal Hamiltonians [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. We also apply this new unitary transformation to wave function calculations, and elaborate on its significance.

Calculation of Matrix Elements in the Foldy-Wouthuysen Representation

В. П. Незнамов, A.A. Sadovoi, Anton S Ulyanov

The paper compares the methods used to calculate matrix elements of the operator of radail electron coordinates in an arbitrary order in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation and with the use of the Dirac equation for 1s-states of the hydrogen-like and helium-like ions of transuranic elements. The obtained analytical and numerical results for 1s-states of the hydrogen-like and helium-like ions proves that the wave function reduction requirement is met with transformation to the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation and confirms that matrix elements can be calculated using only one component (either upper, or lower) of the Dirac bispinor wave function.

General properties of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and applicability of the corrected original Foldy-Wouthuysen method

Alexander J. Silenko

General properties of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation which is widely used in quantum mechanics and quantum chemistry are considered. Merits and demerits of the original Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation method are analyzed. While this method does not satisfy the Eriksen condition of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, it can be corrected with the use of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. We show a possibility of such a correction and propose an appropriate algorithm of calculations. An applicability of the corrected Foldy-Wouthuysen method is restricted by the condition of convergence of a series of relativistic corrections.

Exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation of the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian by Kutzelnigg's method

Dah-Wei Chiou, Tsung-Wei Chen

We apply Kutzelnigg's method for the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation of the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian. The exact FW transformations exist and agree with those obtained by Eriksen's method for two special cases. In the weak-field limit of static and homogeneous electromagnetic fields, the long-held speculation is rigorously proven, by mathematical induction on the orders of $1/c$ in the power series, that the FW transformed Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian is in full agreement with the classical counterpart, which is the sum of the orbital Hamiltonian for the Lorentz force equation and the spin Hamiltonian for the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation.
