Summary form only given. The collisional interactions between the atoms in an cold, dense atomic gas play a crucial role in determining the dynamics and stability of the gas and the approach to Bose-Einstein condensation. This talk will give simple interpretive physical models of threshold scattering, backed up by full quantum scattering calculations for collisions between extremely cold Na atoms or Rb atoms.

Elastic Scattering between Ultracold 23 Na and 85 Rb Atoms in the Triplet State

Qiubo Hu, Yong-Sheng Zhang, Jinfeng Sun +1 more

The elastic scattering properties between ultracold 23 Na and 85 Rb atoms for the triplet state (a 3 Σ + u ) are researched. The s-wave scattering lengths of 23 Na and 85 Rb are calculated by the Numerov and semiclassical method with two kinds of interatomic potentials, which are the interpolation potential and Lennard—Jones potential (LJ 12,6 ) by the same phase Φ. Shape resonances appear clearly in the l = 5 partial waves for the a 3 Σ + u state. Moreover, the s-wave scattering cross section, total cross section and energy positions of shape resonances are also discussed.

Interactions and low-energy collisions between an alkali ion and an alkali atom of a different nucleus

Arpita Rakshit, Chedli Ghanmi, Hamid Berriche +1 more

Abstract We study theoretically interaction potentials and low-energy collisions between different alkali atoms and alkali ions. Specifically, we consider systems such as X + Y + , where X( Y + ) is either Li(Cs + ) or Cs(Li + ), Na(Cs + ) or Cs(Na + ) and Li(Rb + ) or Rb(Li + ). We calculate the molecular potentials of the ground and first two excited states of these three systems using a pseudopotential method and compare our results with those obtained by others. We derive ground-state scattering wave functions and analyze the cold collisional properties of these systems for a wide range of energies. We find that, in order to get convergent results for the total scattering cross sections for energies of the order 1 K, one needs to take into account at least 60 partial waves. The low-energy scattering properties calculated in this paper may serve as a precursor for experimental exploration of quantum collisions between an alkali atom and an alkali ion of a different nucleus.
