Abstract

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon in a four level atomic system with tripod configuration is studied. The results show that this configuration is equivalent to the combination of two single three-level $Λ$ configurations, which, under certain conditions, results in the so-called double-EIT (DEIT) phenomenon. The properties of the double transparency windows for DEIT are discussed in detail and the possible experimental scheme is proposed.

The absorption properties in an inverted-tripod scheme atomic system driven by the coherent fields are investigated by means of the semiclassical theory. The result obtained by means of numerical method indicates that by adjusting the Rabi frequencies of the coherent fields, there appear triple, double, single electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT).In the triple EIT,the location of transparent windows can be controlled by adjusting the detunings for the coherent fields, and changes continuously,i.e.there exist a series of continuous frequencies for the probe field propagating in an atomic medium without absorption in a certain range. Finally, the explanations of these phenomena are given by using the dressed states.

Two electromagnetically induced transparency windows and an enhanced electromagnetically induced transparency signal in a four-level tripod atomic system

Shujing Li, Xudong Yang, Xuemin Cao +2 more

We present the experimental observations and theoretical calculations of two electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows and an enhanced EIT signal in a four-level tripod system of D1 line of 87 Rb atoms. The two EIT dips produced by a strong coupling beam and a weak trigger beam were observed in the absorption spectrum of probe field, when the frequency detuning of the trigger beam was different from that of the coupling beam. When the frequency detuning of the trigger beam was near or equal to that of the coupling beam, the total depth of the EIT dip created by the coupling beam clearly became larger. The experimental measurements were in agreement with theoretical calculations.

Multiple Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Four-Level Atomic System

Using matrix theory, the absorption and dispersion properties of a lamda-type four-level system driven by two coherent fields are investigated. The result obtained by means of numerical method indicates that by adjusting the intensity of Rabi frequencies of the coherent field in the steady state, double or single electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) can appear explicitly in this system. And the explanations of these phenomena are given by using the dressed states. In the double electromagnetically induced transparency, the location of transparent windows can be manipulated by controlling the detuning of the driving field.Additionally,it is also found that the medium shows a large refractive index at each transparency window, and the group velocity of the probe laser can be enhanced.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and controllable group velocity in a five-level atomic system

Lihui Jin, Shangqing Gong, Yueping Niu +1 more

The optical properties of a five-level atomic system composed of a 'Lambda'-type four-level atomic and a tripod four-level atomic systems are investigated. It is found that the behaviors of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and group velocity can be controlled by choosing appropriate parameters with the interacting dark resonances. In particular, when all the fields are on resonance, the slow light at the symmetric transparency windows with a much broader EIT width is obtained by tuning the intensity of the coupling field in comparison with its sub-system, which provides potential applications in quantum storage and retrieval of light.

Local modulation of double electromagnetically induced transparency in an inverted-Y atomic system

Zhiqiang Zeng, Shengyao Zhang, Fu-Ti Liu +1 more

Abstract A four-level inverted-Y configuration driven by two control fields is considered to demonstrate the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). It is shown that the double EIT can be realized in this system. Such double transparency spectra can be locally modulated by changing the detunings as well as the Rabi frequencies of the control fields.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in five-level configurations under Doppler broadening

Abstract Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in five-level atomic systems is theoretically investigated for three representative configurations: M-, inverted-Y, and K-type systems driven by a weak probe field and three control laser fields. The different coupling schemes produce different quantum interference pathways and two-photon resonance conditions, leading to markedly different EIT spectra. The M-type configuration exhibits one, two, and three well-resolved transparency windows as successive control fields are introduced. In contrast, the inverted-Y configuration produces broader transparency windows because of the overlap of multiple interference channels, whereas the K-type configuration exhibits only a single EIT window when all control fields are resonant. Multiple transparency windows in the K-type system appear after introducing appropriate coupling-field detunings. Doppler broadening at room temperature significantly broadens the absorption spectrum and reduces the transparency depth, while preserving the number and positions of the EIT windows. These results demonstrate that the coupling scheme plays an important role in determining the formation and evolution of multi-window EIT spectra and identify the characteristics of the three five-level configurations for multi-channel quantum-optical applications, as well as for the experimental observation of EIT spectra in five-level configurations.
