Resonant Mode Oscillations in Modulated Waveguiding Structures

Abstract

We put forward the concept of resonant, Rabi-like oscillatons and adiabatic transitions between confined light modes in properly modulated multimode waveguides. The phenomenon is shown to take place in both the linear and the nonlinear regimes. In addition, we find that the mode transitions occur not only in simple geometries, but also in complex confining multimode structures. The phenomenon is analogous to the familiar stimulated state transitions that occur in multilevel quantum systems.

Experimental Observation of Rabi Oscillations in Photonic Lattices

K. V. Shandarova, Christian E. Rüter, Detlef Kip +4 more

We demonstrate spatial Rabi oscillations in optical waveguide arrays. Adiabatic transitions between extended Floquet-Bloch modes associated with different bands are stimulated by periodic modulation of the photonic lattice in the propagation direction. When the stimulating modulation also carries transverse momentum, the transition becomes indirect, equivalent to phonon-assisted Rabi oscillations. In solid state physics such indirect Rabi oscillations necessitate coherent phonons and hence they have never been observed. Our experiments suggest that phonon-assisted Rabi oscillations are observable also with Bose-Einstein condensates, as well as with other wave systems-where coherence can be maintained for at least one period of the Rabi oscillation.

We observe Rabi oscillations in one-dimensional waveguide arrays. Adiabatic transitions, both direct and indirect (phonon-assisted), between extended Floquet-Bloch modes associated with different bands are stimulated by index-gratings inducing periodic modulations along the propagation direction. © 2007 Optical Society of America.

‘Quantum effects’ for classical light in modern waveguide circuits

Anna V. Bogatskaya, N. V. Klenov, Maxim V Tereshonok +1 more

Abstract Here we use approaches and concepts from quantum mechanics in order to analyze the propagation of classical electromagnetic waves in the elements of integrated optical circuits. These waveguide circuits are considered as potential wells between complex-shapes barriers formed by opaque media. This allowed us to construct in the framework of the slow-varying amplitude approximation for the wave equation an analogy between coherent oscillations in a quantum system and the redistribution in space of the field strength of a classical wave. We also demonstrated the methods to control the mode composition of a classical light in a spatially inhomogeneous waveguide structure. The proposed description was based on the analogy with Rabi-type oscillations in quantum mechanics.

Transfer of light waves in optical waveguides via a continuum

Stefano Longhi

Classical wave optical analogs of coherent population transfer via a continuum, recently demonstrated for laser-driven atoms and molecules in the atomic physics context, are theoretically proposed for light waves propagating in waveguide-based photonic structures. In particular, it is shown that exploitation of the optical analogs of two-photon Rabi oscillations and stimulated Raman adiabatic passage via continuous states enables efficient transfer of light waves between two channel optical waveguides side coupled to a slab waveguide.

Effect of Nonlinearity on Adiabatic Evolution of Light

Yoav Lahini, Francesca Pozzi, Marc Sorel +3 more

We investigate the effect of nonlinearity in a system described by an adiabatically evolving Hamiltonian. Experiments are conducted in a three-core waveguide structure that is adiabatically varying with distance, in analogy to the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process in atomic physics. In the linear regime, the system exhibits an adiabatic power transfer between two waveguides which are not directly coupled, with negligible power recorded in the intermediate coupling waveguide. In the presence of nonlinearity the adiabatic light passage is found to critically depend on the excitation power. We show how this effect is related to the destruction of the dark state formed in this configuration.

Visualization of two-photon Rabi oscillations in evanescently coupled optical waveguides

Marco Ornigotti, Giuseppe Della Valle, Toney Teddy Fernandez +4 more

An optical analogue of two-photon Rabi oscillations, occurring in a three-level atomic or molecular system coherently driven by two detuned laser fields, is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated using three evanescently coupled optical waveguides realized on an active glass substrate. The optical analogue stems from the formal analogy between spatial propagation of light waves in the three-waveguide structure and the coherent temporal evolution of populations in a three-level atomic medium driven by two laser fields under two-photon resonance. In our optical experiment, two-photon Rabi oscillations are thus visualized as a slow spatial oscillatory exchange of light power between the two outer waveguides of the structure with a small excitation of the central waveguide.
