Abstract

We investigate the low-lying excited states of the spin J ferromagnetic XXZ chain with Ising anisotropy Δ and kink boundary conditions. Since the third component of the total magnetization, M , is conserved, it is meaningful to study the spectrum for each fixed value of M . We prove that for J ≥3/2 the lowest excited eigenvalues are separated by a gap from the rest of the spectrum, uniformly in the length of the chain. In the thermodynamic limit, this means that there are a positive number of excitations above the ground state and below the essential spectrum.

The large-spin asymptotics of the ferromagnetic XXZ chain

Tom Michoel, Bruno Nachtergaele

We present new results and give a concise review of recent previous results on the asymptotics for large spin of the low-lying spectrum of the ferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg chain with kink boundary conditions. Our main interest is to gain detailed information on the interface ground states of this model and the low-lying excitations above them. The new and most detailed results are obtained using a rigorous version of bosonization, which can be interpreted as a quantum central limit theorem.

Low energy spectrum of the XXZ model coupled to a magnetic field

Simone Del Vecchio, Jürg Martin Fröhlich, Alessandro Pizzo +1 more

For a class of Hamiltonians of XXZ spin chains in a uniform external magnetic field that are small quantum perturbations of an Ising Hamiltonian, it is shown that the spectral gap above the ground-state energy remains strictly positive when the perturbation is turned on, uniformly in the length of the chain. This result is proven for rather generic perturbations of both the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic Ising Hamiltonian. In the antiferromagnetic case, the external magnetic field is required to be small. For a chain of an even number of sites, the two-fold degenerate ground-state energy of the unperturbed antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian may split into two energy levels separated by a very small gap. These results are proven by using a new, quite subtle refinement of a method developed in earlier work and used to iteratively block-diagonalize Hamiltonians of systems confined to ever larger subsets of a lattice by using strictly local unitary conjugations. The new method developed in this paper provides complete control of boundary effects on the low-energy spectrum of perturbed Ising chains uniformly in their length.

Ferromagnetic Heisenberg XXZ chain in a pinning field

Pierluigi Contucci, Bruno Nachtergaele, Wolfgang L. Spitzer

We investigate the effect of a magnetic field supported at a single lattice site on the low-energy spectrum of the ferromagnetic Heisenberg XXZ chain. Such fields, caused by impurities, can modify the low-energy spectrum significantly by pinning certain excitations, such as kink and droplet states. We distinguish between different boundary conditions (or sectors), the direction and also the strength of the magnetic field. E.g., with a magnetic field in the z direction applied at the origin and ++ boundary conditions, there is a critical field strength ${B}_{c}$ (which depends on the anisotropy of the Hamiltonian and the spin value) with the following properties: for $B<{B}_{c}$ there is a unique ground state with a gap, at the critical value ${B}_{c}$ there are infinitely many (droplet) ground states with gapless excitations, and for $B>{B}_{c}$ there is again a unique ground state but now belonging to the continuous spectrum. In contrast, any magnetic field with a nonvanishing component in the $\mathrm{xy}$ plane yields a unique ground state, which, depending on the boundary conditions, is either an (anti)kink, or an (anti)droplet state. For such fields, i.e., not aligned with the z axis, excitations always have a gap and we obtain a rigorous lower bound for that gap.

Droplet Excitations for the Spin-1/2 XXZ Chain with Kink Boundary Conditions

Bruno Nachtergaele, Spitzer, Wolfgang, Shannon L. Starr

We give a precise definition for excitations consisting of a droplet of size n in\n the XXZ chain with various choices of boundary conditions, including kink boundary\n conditions and prove that, for each n, the droplet energies converge to a boundary\n condition independent value in the thermodynamic limit. We rigorously compute an explicit\n formula for this limiting value using the Bethe ansatz.

Open XXZ chain and boundary modes at zero temperature

Sebastian Grijalva, Jacopo De Nardis, V. Terras

We study the open XXZ spin chain in the anti-ferromagnetic regime and for generic longitudinal magnetic fields at the two boundaries. We discuss the ground state via the Bethe ansatz and we show that, for a chain of even length L and in a regime where both boundary magnetic fields are equal and bounded by a critical field, the spectrum is gapped and the ground state is doubly degenerate up to exponentially small corrections in L. We connect this degeneracy to the presence of a boundary root, namely an excitation localized at one of the two boundaries. We compute the local magnetization at the left edge of the chain and we show that, due to the existence of a boundary root, this depends also on the value of the field at the opposite edge, even in the half-infinite chain limit. Moreover we give an exact expression for the large time limit of the spin autocorrelation at the boundary, which we explicitly compute in terms of the form factor between the two quasi-degenerate ground states. This, as we show, turns out to be equal to the contribution of the boundary root to the local magnetization. We finally discuss the case of chains of odd length.

Entanglement spectrum of the Heisenberg XXZ chain near the ferromagnetic point

Vincenzo Alba, Masudul Haque, Andreas Martin Läuchli

We study the entanglement spectrum (ES) of a finite XXZ spin- chain in the limit Δ → −1 + for both open and periodic boundary conditions. At Δ =− 1 (ferromagnetic point) the model is equivalent to the Heisenberg ferromagnet and its degenerate ground state manifold is the S U (2) multiplet with maximal total spin. Any state in this so-called 'symmetric sector' is an equal weight superposition of all possible spin configurations. In the gapless phase at Δ >− 1 this property is progressively lost as one moves away from the Δ =− 1 point. We investigate how the ES obtained from the states in this manifold reflects this change, using exact diagonalization and Bethe ansatz calculations. We find that in the limit Δ → −1 + most of the ES levels show divergent behavior. Moreover, while at Δ =− 1 the ES contains no information about the boundaries, for Δ >− 1 it depends dramatically on the choice of boundary conditions. For both open and periodic boundary conditions the ES exhibits an elegant multiplicity structure for which we conjecture a combinatorial formula. We also study the entanglement eigenfunctions, i.e. the eigenfunctions of the reduced density matrix. We find that the eigenfunctions corresponding to the non-diverging levels mimic the behavior of the state wavefunction, whereas the others show intriguing polynomial structures. Finally we analyze the distribution of the ES levels as the system is detuned away from Δ =− 1.
