Abstract

The condensate fraction of a homogeneous and dilute Bose gas is expanded as a power series of $\sqrt{n a^3}$ as $N_0/N = 1 -c_1 (n a^3)^{1/2} -c_2 (n a^3) - c_3 (n a^3)^{3/2}\hdots.$ The coefficient $c_1$ is well-known as $8/3 \sqrtπ$, but the others are unknown yet. Considering two-body contact interactions and applying a canonical transformation method twice we developed the method to obtain the higher order coefficients analytically. An iteration method is applied to make up a cutoff in a fluctuation term. The coefficients ares $c_2=2(π- 8/3)$ and $c_3=(4/\sqrtπ) (π-8/3)(10/3-π)$.

Higher-order evaluation of the critical temperature for interacting homogeneous dilute Bose gases

F. Cruz, Marcus Benghi Pinto, Rudnei O. Ramos +1 more

We use the nonperturbative linear $\ensuremath{\delta}$ expansion method to evaluate analytically the coefficients ${c}_{1}$ and ${c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{''}}$ that appear in the expansion for the transition temperature for a dilute, homogeneous, three-dimensional Bose gas given by ${T}_{c}{=T}_{0}({1+c}_{1}{\mathrm{an}}^{1/3}+[{c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{'}}\mathrm{ln}{(an}^{1/3}{)+c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{''}}]{a}^{2}{n}^{2/3}{+O(a}^{3}n)),$ where ${T}_{0}$ is the result for an ideal gas, a is the s-wave scattering length, and n is the number density. In a previous work the same method has been used to evaluate ${c}_{1}$ to order ${\ensuremath{\delta}}^{2}$ with the result ${c}_{1}=3.06.$ Here, we push the calculation to the next two orders obtaining ${c}_{1}=2.45$ at order ${\ensuremath{\delta}}^{3}$ and ${c}_{1}=1.48$ at order ${\ensuremath{\delta}}^{4}.$ Analyzing the topology of the graphs involved we discuss how our results relate to other nonperturbative analytical methods such as the self-consistent resummation and the $1/N$ approximations. At the same orders we obtain ${c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{''}}=101.4,$ ${c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{''}}=98.2,$ and ${c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{''}}=82.9.$ Our analytical results seem to support the recent Monte Carlo estimates ${c}_{1}=1.32\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02$ and ${c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{''}}=75.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4.$

Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensate with Large Scattering Length

Eric Braaten, H.‐W. Hammer, Thomas Mehen

We study a dilute Bose gas of atoms whose scattering length a is large compared to the range of their interaction. We calculate the energy density E of a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to second order in the low-density expansion, expressing it in terms of a and a second parameter Lambda* that determines the low-energy observables in the three-body sector. The second-order correction to E has a small imaginary part that reflects the instability due to three-body recombination. In the case of a trapped BEC with large negative a, we calculate the coefficient of the three-body mean-field term in E in terms of a and Lambda*. It can be very large if there is an Efimov state near threshold.

Monte Carlo simulations of the unitary Bose gas

M. Rossi, Luca Salasnich, Francesco Ancilotto +1 more

We investigate the zero-temperature properties of a diluted homogeneous Bose gas made of $N$ particles interacting via a two-body square-well potential by performing Monte Carlo simulations. We tune the interaction strength to achieve arbitrary positive values of the scattering length and compute by Monte Carlo quadrature the energy per particle $E/N$ and the condensate fraction ${N}_{0}/N$ of this system by using a Jastrow ansatz for the many-body wave function, which avoids the formation of the self-bound ground state and describes instead a (metastable) gaseous state with uniform density. In the unitarity limit, where the scattering length diverges while the range of the interatomic potential is much smaller than the average distance between atoms, we find a finite energy per particle [$E/N=0.70\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\ensuremath{\hbar}}^{2}{(6{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{2}n)}^{2/3}/2m$, with $n$ the number density] and a quite large condensate fraction (${N}_{0}/N=0.83$).

Ideal Bose-Einstein condensation in the canonical ensemble: exact asymptotic estimates from large deviations

Giacomo Gradenigo, Dario Lucente, Luca Salasnich

In this work we present a large-deviations approach to the calculation of the canonical partition function for free bosons. Three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation is studied in the fixed-density ensemble as a function of the dimensionless density $\varrho = ρλ_T^3$, with $ρ=N/L^3$ the standard particle density, $λ_T$ the thermal wavelength, $L$ the linear size of the box and $N$ the total number of particles. A large-deviations approach in terms of the dimensionless parameter $\ell=L/λ_T$ allows us to provide exact asymptotic estimates of the canonical partition function both above and below the critical density $\varrho_c$ for Bose-Einstein condensation. We show how this approach allows to explicitly account for finite-size effects and how it fully captures the first-order aspects of the transition, allowing us to explicitate its driving mechanism in terms of the competing probabilities of normal and condensed phases. The proposed large-deviations approach allows then to obtain in all regimes explicit and simple analytical expressions, at the leading order in the large parameter $\ell$, for both the average fraction of particles in the ground state, the condensate fraction $\langle n_0(\varrho) \rangle = \langle N_0(\varrho) \rangle/N$, and for its fluctuations, $σ_0(\varrho) = \sqrt{\langle N_0^2(\varrho)\rangle - \langle N_0(\varrho)\rangle^2}/N$, retrieving for instance the anomalous scaling $σ_0(\varrho)\sim 1/V^{1/3}$ in the condensed regime, $\varrho > \varrho_c$. Our large-deviations asymptotic estimate, by analytically clarifying the mixed-order nature of Bose-Einstein condensation, allows then to reveal the similarity between this transition and other mixed-order transitions, as for instance the localization transition in the Discrete Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation.

Tc for homogeneous dilute Bose gases: A second-order result

Peter B. Arnold, Guy D. Moore, Boris Tomášik

The transition temperature for a dilute, homogeneous, three-dimensional Bose gas has the expansion ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}{=T}_{0}{{1+c}_{1}{\mathrm{an}}^{1/3}+[{c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{'}}\mathrm{ln}{(an}^{1/3}{)+c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{''}}]{a}^{2}{n}^{2/3}{+O(a}^{3}n)},$ where a is the scattering length, n the number density, and ${T}_{0}$ the ideal gas result. The first-order coefficient ${c}_{1}$ depends on nonperturbative physics. In this paper, we show that the coefficient ${c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ may be computed perturbatively. We also show that the remaining second-order coefficient ${c}_{2}^{\ensuremath{''}}$ depends on non-perturbative physics but may be related, by a perturbative calculation, to quantities that have previously been measured using lattice simulations of three-dimensional $O(2)$ scalar field theory. Making use of those simulation results, we find ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}\ensuremath{\simeq}{T}_{0}{1+(1.32\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02){\mathrm{an}}^{1/3}+[19.7518\mathrm{ln}{(an}^{1/3})+(75.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4)]{a}^{2}{n}^{2/3}{+O(a}^{3}n)}.$

GROUND-STATE ENERGY DENSITY OF A DILUTE BOSE GAS IN THE CANONICAL TRANSFORMATION

Sang‐Hoon Kim, CHUL KU KIM, Mukunda P. Das

The ground-state energy density of an interacting dilute Bose gas system is studied in the canonical transformation scheme. It is shown that the transformation scheme enables us to calculate a higher order correction of order na3 in the particle depletion and ground-state energy density of a dilute Bose gas system, which corresponds to the density fluctuation resulting from the excited states. Considering a two-body interaction only, the coefficient of the na3 term is shown to be 2(π-8/3) for the particle depletion, and 16(π-8/3) for the ground-state energy density.

In this work we present a large-deviations approach to the calculation of the canonical partition function for free bosons. Three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation is studied in the fixed-density ensemble as a function of the dimensionless density ϱ=ρλT3\varrho = ρλ_T^3ϱ=ρλT3, with ρ=N/L3ρ=N/L^3ρ=N/L3 the standard particle density, λTλ_TλT the thermal wavelength, LLL the linear size of the box and NNN the total number of particles. A large-deviations approach in terms of the dimensionless parameter ℓ=L/λT\ell=L/λ_Tℓ=L/λT allows us to provide exact asymptotic estimates of the canonical partition function both above and below the critical density ϱc\varrho_cϱc for Bose-Einstein condensation. We show how this approach allows to explicitly account for finite-size effects and how it fully captures the first-order aspects of the transition, allowing us to explicitate its driving mechanism in terms of the competing probabilities of normal and condensed phases. The proposed large-deviations approach allows then to obtain in all regimes explicit and simple analytical expressions, at the leading order in the large parameter ℓ\ellℓ, for both the average fraction of particles in the ground state, the condensate fraction ⟨n0(ϱ)⟩=⟨N0(ϱ)⟩/N\langle n_0(\varrho) \rangle = \langle N_0(\varrho) \rangle/N⟨n0(ϱ)⟩=⟨N0(ϱ)⟩/N, and for its fluctuations, σ0(ϱ)=⟨N02(ϱ)⟩−⟨N0(ϱ)⟩2/Nσ_0(\varrho) = \sqrt{\langle N_0^2(\varrho)\rangle - \langle N_0(\varrho)\rangle^2}/Nσ0(ϱ)=⟨N02(ϱ)⟩−⟨N0(ϱ)⟩2/N, retrieving for instance the anomalous scaling σ0(ϱ)∼1/V1/3σ_0(\varrho)\sim 1/V^{1/3}σ0(ϱ)∼1/V1/3 in the condensed regime, ϱ>ϱc\varrho > \varrho_cϱ>ϱc.
