Abstract

In this work we present a large-deviations approach to the calculation of the canonical partition function for free bosons. Three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation is studied in the fixed-density ensemble as a function of the dimensionless density $\varrho = ρλ_T^3$, with $ρ=N/L^3$ the standard particle density, $λ_T$ the thermal wavelength, $L$ the linear size of the box and $N$ the total number of particles. A large-deviations approach in terms of the dimensionless parameter $\ell=L/λ_T$ allows us to provide exact asymptotic estimates of the canonical partition function both above and below the critical density $\varrho_c$ for Bose-Einstein condensation. We show how this approach allows to explicitly account for finite-size effects and how it fully captures the first-order aspects of the transition, allowing us to explicitate its driving mechanism in terms of the competing probabilities of normal and condensed phases. The proposed large-deviations approach allows then to obtain in all regimes explicit and simple analytical expressions, at the leading order in the large parameter $\ell$, for both the average fraction of particles in the ground state, the condensate fraction $\langle n_0(\varrho) \rangle = \langle N_0(\varrho) \rangle/N$, and for its fluctuations, $σ_0(\varrho) = \sqrt{\langle N_0^2(\varrho)\rangle - \langle N_0(\varrho)\rangle^2}/N$, retrieving for instance the anomalous scaling $σ_0(\varrho)\sim 1/V^{1/3}$ in the condensed regime, $\varrho > \varrho_c$. Our large-deviations asymptotic estimate, by analytically clarifying the mixed-order nature of Bose-Einstein condensation, allows then to reveal the similarity between this transition and other mixed-order transitions, as for instance the localization transition in the Discrete Non-Linear Schrödinger Equation.

Bose-Einstein condensation in a canonical ensemble with fixed total momentum

Andrey S. Plyashechnik, Alexey A. Sokolik, Yu. E. Lozovik

We consider Bose-Einstein condensation of noninteracting homogeneous three-dimensional gas in canonical ensemble when both particle number $N$ and total momentum $\mathbf{P}$ of all particles are fixed. Using the saddle-point method, we derive the large-$N$ analytical approximations for partition function, free energy, and statistical distributions of occupation numbers of different single-particle energy levels. At temperatures below the critical point of phase transition, we predict, in some ranges of $\mathbf{P}$, fragmentation of the condensate, when more than one single-particle level is macroscopically occupied. The occupation number distributions have approximately Gaussian shapes for the levels hosting the condensate, and exponential shapes for other, noncondensate levels. Our analysis demonstrates breaking of Galilean invariance of moving finite-temperature many-particle system in the presence of Bose-Einstein condensation and extends the theory of moving and rotating quantum systems to the finite-temperature large-$N$ limit.

Particle number counting statistics in ideal Bose gases

Christoph Weiß, Martin Wilkens

We discuss the exact particle number counting statistics of degenerate ideal Bose gases in the microcanonical, canonical, and grand-canonical ensemble, respectively, for various trapping potentials. We then invoke the Maxwell's Demon ensemble [Navez et el., Phys. Rev. Lett. (1997)] and show that for large total number of particles the root-mean-square fluctuation of the condensate occupation scales n0 / [T=Tc] r N s with scaling exponents r = 3=2, s = 1=2 for the3D harmonic oscillator trapping potential, and r = 1,s= 2=3 for the 3D box. We derive an explicit expression for r and s in terms of spatial dimension D and spectral index sigma of the single-particle energy spectrum. Our predictions also apply to systems where Bose-Einstein condensation does not occur. We point out that the condensate fluctuations in the microcanonical and canonical ensemble respect the principle of thermodynamic equivalence.

Condensation ofNbosons. III. Analytical results for all higher moments of condensate fluctuations in interacting and ideal dilute Bose gases via the canonical ensemble quasiparticle formulation

Vitaly V. Kocharovsky, Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Marlan O. Scully

We consider equilibrium canonical-ensemble fluctuations of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a trap using the particle-number conserving operator formalism of Girardeau and Arnowitt [Phys. Rev. 113, 755 (1959)] and the concept of the canonical-ensemble quasiparticles. We find explicit expressions for the characteristic function and all cumulants of the ground-state occupation statistics both for the dilute weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases. We present analytical formulas for the moments of the ground-state occupation fluctuations in the weakly interacting and ideal Bose gases in a box (``homogeneous gas'') as well as in the ideal Bose gas in an arbitrary power-law trap, in particular, in an arbitrary harmonic trap. We calculate the effect of Bogoliubov coupling between quasiparticles on suppression of the ground-state occupation fluctuations at moderate temperatures and their enhancement at very low temperatures. We clarify a crossover between ideal-gas and weakly interacting gas statistics, which is governed by a pair-correlation, squeezing mechanism. The important conclusion is that in most cases the ground-state occupation fluctuations are anomalously large and are not Gaussian even in the thermodynamic limit.

Large Deviations for the Bose--Einstein Condensate of the Ideal Gas in the Canonical Ensemble

Andreas Deuchert, Xuanyu Li

We consider a non-interacting Bose gas governed by a general one-particle Hamiltonian in the canonical ensemble. Our main results are large-deviation estimates for the number of particles in the Bose--Einstein condensate. We show that the left- and right-tail probabilities decay at different exponential rates as the number of particles tends to infinity.

On the theory of Bose–condensate fluctuations in systems of finite size

A. I. Bugrij, V. M. Loktev

An asymptotic expansions for the grand partition function of ideal Bose gas in the canonical ensemble with arbitrary number of particles is obtained. It is shown that the expressions found are valid in the whole temperature region, the critical temperature included. A comparison between the asymptotic formulas for Bose-condensate fluctuations and the exact ones is carried out and their quantitative agreement is established.

The Bose-Einstein condensation in a finite one-dimensional homogeneous system of noninteracting bosons

В. А. Алексеев

Condensation of the ideal Bose gas in a closed volume having the shape of a rectangular parallel-epiped of length L with a square base of side length l ( L ≫ l ) is theoretically studied within the framework of the Bose-Einstein statistics (grand canonical ensemble) and within the statistics of a canonical ensemble of bosons. Under the condition N ( l/L ) 4 ≪ l, where N is the total number of gas particles, dependence of the average number of particles in the condensate on the temperature T in both statistics is expressed as a function of the ratio t = T/T 1 , where T 1 is a certain characteristic temperature depending only on the longitudinal size L . Therefore, the condensation process exhibits a one-dimensional (1D) character. In the 1D regime, the average numbers of particles in condensates of the grand canonical and canonical ensembles coincide only in the limiting cases of t → 0 and t → ∞. The distribution function of the number of particles in the condensate of a canonical ensemble of bosons at t ≤1 has a resonance shape and qualitatively differs from the Bose-Einstein distribution. The former distribution begins to change in the region of t ∼ 1 and acquires the shape of the Bose-Einstein distribution for t ≫ 1. This transformation proceeds gradually that is, the 1D condensation process exhibits no features characteristic of the phase transition in a 3D system. For N ( l/L ) 4 ≫ 1, the process acquires a 3D character with respect to the average number of particles in the condensate, but the 1D character of the distribution function of the number of particles in the condensate of a canonical ensemble of bosons is retained at all N values.
