Spin Dynamics in a One-Dimensional Ferromagnetic Bose Gas

Abstract

We investigate the propagation of spin excitations in a one-dimensional ferromagnetic Bose gas. While the spectrum of longitudinal spin waves in this system is soundlike, the dispersion of transverse spin excitations is quadratic, making a direct application of the Luttinger liquid theory impossible. By using a combination of different analytic methods we derive the large time asymptotic behavior of the spin-spin dynamical correlation function for strong interparticle repulsion. The result has an unusual structure associated with a crossover from the regime of trapped spin wave to an open regime and does not have analogues in known low-energy universality classes of quantum 1D systems.

Spin-incoherent one-dimensional spin-1 Bose Luttinger liquid

H. H. Jen, Sungkit Yip

We investigate spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid of a one-dimensional spin-1 Bose gas in a harmonic trap. In this regime highly degenerate spin configurations emerge since the energy splitting between different spin states is much less than the thermal energy of the system, while the temperature is low enough that the lowest energetic orbitals are occupied. As an example we numerically study the momentum distribution of a one-dimensional spin-1 Bose gas in Tonks-Girardeau gas limit and in the sector of zero magnetization. We find that the momentum distributions broaden as the number of atoms increase due to the averaging of spin function overlaps. Large momentum ($p$) asymptotic is analytically derived, showing the universal $1/{p}^{4}$ dependence. We demonstrate that the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid has a momentum distribution also distinct from spinless bosons at finite temperature.

Spin-charge separation in a strongly correlated spin-polarized chain

Shimul Akhanjee, Yaroslav Tserkovnyak

We combine the first-quantized path-integral formalism and bosonization to develop a phenomenological theory for spin-charge-coupled dynamics in one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic systems with strong interparticle repulsion, at low temperatures. We assume an effective spin-charge separation and retain the standard Luttinger-liquid plasmon branch, which is explicitly coupled to a ferromagnetic spin-wave texture with a quadratic dispersion. The dynamic spin structure severely suppresses the plasmon peak in the single-particle propagator, in both fermionic and bosonic systems. Our analysis provides an effective theory for the new universality class of 1D ferromagnetic systems, capturing both the trapped spin and propagating spin-wave regimes of the long-time behavior.

Luttinger hydrodynamics of confined one-dimensional Bose gases with dipolar interactions

R. Citro, S. De Palo, E. Orignac +2 more

Ultracold bosonic and fermionic quantum gases confined to quasi-one-dimensional (1D) geometry are promising candidates for probing fundamental concepts of Luttinger liquid (LL) physics. They can also be exploited for devising applications in quantum information processing and precision measurements. Here, we focus on 1D dipolar Bose gases, where evidence of super-strong coupling behavior has been demonstrated by analyzing the low-energy static and dynamical structures of the fluid at zero temperature by a combined reptation quantum Monte Carlo (RQMC) and bosonization approach. Fingerprints of LL behavior emerge in the whole crossover from the already strongly interacting Tonks–Girardeau at low density to a dipolar density wave regime at high density. We have also shown that a LL framework can be effectively set up and utilized to describe this strongly correlated crossover physics in the case of confined 1D geometries after using the results for the homogeneous system in LL hydrodynamic equations within a local density approximation. This leads to the prediction of observable quantities such as the frequencies of the collective modes of the trapped dipolar gas under the more realistic conditions that could be found in ongoing experiments. The present paper provides a description of the theoretical framework in which the above results have been worked out, making available all the detailed derivations of the hydrodynamic Luttinger equations for the inhomogeneous trapped gas and of the correlation functions for the homogeneous system.

Spin Waves in a One-Dimensional Spinor Bose Gas

Jean-Noël Fuchs, Dimitri M. Gangardt, Tassilo Keilmann +1 more

We study a one-dimensional (iso)spin 1/2 Bose gas with repulsive delta-function interaction by the Bethe Ansatz method and discuss the excitations above the polarized ground state. In addition to phonons the system features spin waves with a quadratic dispersion. We compute analytically and numerically the effective mass of the spin wave and show that the spin transport is greatly suppressed in the strong coupling regime, where the isospin-density (or "spin charge") separation is maximal. Using a hydrodynamic approach, we study spin excitations in a harmonically trapped system and discuss prospects for future studies of two-component ultracold atomic gases.

'Luttinger liquid theory' of one-dimensional quantum fluids. I. Properties of the Luttinger model and their extension to the general 1D interacting spinless Fermi gas

F. D. M. Haldane

The explicitly soluble Luttinger model is used as a basis for the description of the general interacting Fermi gas in one dimension, which will be called 'Luttinger liquid theory', by analogy with Fermi liquid theory. The excitation spectrum of the Luttinger model is described by density-wave, charge and current excitations; its spectral properties determine a characteristic parameter that controls the correlation function exponents. These relations are shown to survive in non-soluble generalisations of the model with a non-linear fermion dispersion. It is proposed that this low-energy structure is universal to a wide class of 1D systems with conducting or fluid properties, including spin chains.
