We study the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor J_1 and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor J_2 exchange couplings in the presence of magnetic field. We use both numerical approaches (the density matrix renormalization group method and exact diagonalization) and effective field-theory approach, and obtain the ground-state phase diagram for wide parameter range of the coupling ratio J_1/J_2. The phase diagram is rich and has a variety of phases, including the vector chiral phase, the nematic phase, and other multipolar phases. In the vector chiral phase, which appears in relatively weak magnetic field, the ground state exhibits long-range order (LRO) of vector chirality which spontaneously breaks a parity symmetry. The nematic phase shows a quasi-LRO of antiferro-nematic spin correlation, and arises as a result of formation of two-magnon bound states in high magnetic fields. Similarly, the higher multipolar phases, such as triatic (p=3) and quartic (p=4) phases, are formed through binding of p magnons near the saturation fields, showing quasi-LRO of antiferro-multipolar spin correlations. The multipolar phases cross over to spin density wave phases as the magnetic field is decreased, before encountering a phase transition to the vector chiral phase at a lower field. The implications of our results to quasi-one-dimensional frustrated magnets (e.g., LiCuVO_4) are discussed.

Coupled s = 1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chains with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in high magnetic field are studied by density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and hard-core boson (HCB) approaches at T = 0. First, we propose an appropriate one-dimensional array for the construction of a 3D system to be studied with the DMRG method and demonstrate the performance by comparing the ground-state energy to the exact solution. Next, the binding energy of multimagnon bound state is calculated as a function of interchain coupling. We find that the multimagnon bound state is easily destroyed by weak interchain coupling. In the 2-magnon phase the DMRG results are supported by the HCB approach.

J exchange interactions in a strong magnetic field
H. It is well known that, due to attraction between magnons, quantum phase transitions (QPTs) take place at
H=Hs from the fully polarized phase to the nematic phase if
J>∣J1∣/4. Such a transition at
J>0.368∣J1∣ is characterized by a softening of the two-magnon bound-state spectrum. Using a bond-operator formalism we propose a bosonic representation of the spin Hamiltonian containing, aside from bosons describing one-magnon spin-1 excitations, a boson describing spin-2 excitations whose spectrum coincides at $H\ensuremath{\ge}{H}_{s}$ with the two-magnon bound-state spectrum obtained before. The presence of the bosonic mode in the theory that softens at
H=Hs makes the QPT consideration substantially standard. In the 1D case at
H<Hs, we find an expression for the magnetization which well describes existing numerical data. Expressions for spin correlators are obtained which coincide with those derived before, either in the limiting case of $J\ensuremath{\gg}|{J}_{1}|$ or using a phenomenological theory. In quasi-1D magnets, we find that the boundary in the
H-
T plane between the fully polarized and the nematic phases is given by ${H}_{s}(0)\ensuremath{-}{H}_{s}(T)\ensuremath{\propto}{T}^{3/2}$. Simple expressions are obtained in the nematic phase for static spin correlators, spectra of magnons and the soft mode, magnetization, and the nematic order parameter. All static two-spin correlation functions are short ranged with the correlation length proportional to
1/ln(1+∣J1∣/J). Dynamical spin susceptibilities are discussed and it is shown that the soft mode can be observed experimentally in the longitudinal channel.
Abstract We investigate magnetic excitations and spin transport properties of a frustrated spin chain with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings in a magnetic field by density-matrix renormalization group methods. In the field-induced quadrupole and octupole regimes, the low-energy excitation is governed by two-and three-magnon bound states, respectively, so that bound magnon clusters would contribute to the spin transport. We show that spin current correlations decrease when the system goes from the quadrupole regime into the octupole regime. This indicates that the spin transport is suppressed in the octupole regime, although bound three-magnon clusters carry a larger amount of angular momentum than bound two-magnon clusters.
Recently, it has been shown that spin nematic (quadrupolar) or higher multipolar correlation functions exhibit a quasi-long-range order in the wide region of the field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid (TLL) phase in spin-
21 zigzag chains. In this Rapid Communication, we point out that the temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate
1/T1 in these multipolar TLLs is qualitatively different from that in more conventional TLLs of one-dimensional quantum magnets (e.g., the spin-
21 Heisenberg chain);
1/T1 decreases with lowering temperature in multipolar TLL. We also discuss low-energy features in spin dynamical structure factors which are characteristic of the multipolar TLL phases.
