Three comments on the Fermi gas at unitarity in a harmonic trap

Abstract

In this note we consider three issues related to the unitary Fermi gas in a harmonic trap. We present a short proof of a virial theorem, which states that the average energy of a particle system at unitarity in a harmonic trap is twice larger than the average potential energy. The theorem is valid for all systems with no intrinsic scale, at zero or finite temperature. We discuss the odd-even splitting in a unitarity Fermi gas in a harmonic trap. We show that at large number of particles N the odd-even splitting is proportional to N^{1/9}\hbarω, with an undetermined numerical constant. We also show that for odd N the lowest excitation energies are of order N^{-1/3}\hbarω.

Thermodynamics of trapped finite unitary Fermi gas

Yuan Du-Qi

At zero-temperature and finite-temperature, the thermodynamic properties of finite unitary Fermi gas in a three-dimensional harmonic trap are investigated by using fractional exclusion statistics, and the results are compared with those of the system which satisfies the thermodynamic limit. At zero-temperature, Fermi energy and average energy of per particle increase with the increase of the number of particles for finite unitary Fermi gas, and their limits are the corresponding parameters of the system which satisfy thermodynamic limits. Fermi energy and average energy of per particle each have a maximum value changing with the boundary of the potential well. For the finite-temperature trapped unitary Fermi system, when the number of particles is certain the average energy of per particle, average entropy of per particle, average heat capacity of per particle each have a characteristic temperature, respectively, when the temperature is equal to the characteristic temperature of the physical parameter, the corresponding parameters for the finite system and the thermodynamic limit system are equal, when the temperature is lower (or higher) than the characteristic temperature of parameter, the physical parameter of the finite system will be greater (or less) than the corresponding parameter of the thermodynamic limit system. The characteristic temperature has particle number effect and boundary effect. When the temperature is determined, the average energy of per particle, average entropy of per particle and average heat capacity of per particle each have a characteristic number of particles, respectively, when the number of particles is equal to the characteristic number of particles for physical parameter, the corresponding parameters for the finite system and the thermodynamic limit system are equal, when the number of particles is less (or more) than the characteristic number of particles for corresponding parameter, the corresponding parameter of the finite system will be less (or larger) than the thermodynamic limit of system.

Natural and unnatural parity states of small trapped equal-mass two-component Fermi gases at unitarity and fourth-order virial coefficient

Debraj Rakshit, K. M. Daily, D. Blume

Equal-mass two-component Fermi gases under spherically symmetric external harmonic confinement with large $s$-wave scattering length are considered. Using the stochastic variational approach, we determine the lowest 286 and 164 relative eigenenergies of the $(2,2)$ and $(3,1)$ systems at unitarity as a function of the range ${r}_{0}$ of the underlying two-body potential and extrapolate to the ${r}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ limit. Our calculations include all states with vanishing and finite angular momentum $L$ (and natural and unnatural parity $\ensuremath{\Pi}$) with relative energy up to 10.5 $\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\Omega}$, where $\ensuremath{\Omega}$ denotes the angular trapping frequency of the external confinement. Our extrapolated zero-range energies are estimated to have uncertainties of 0.1$%$ or smaller. The $(2,2)$ and $(3,1)$ energies are used to determine the fourth-order virial coefficient of the trapped unitary two-component Fermi gas in the low-temperature regime. Our results are compared with recent predictions for the fourth-order virial coefficient of the homogeneous system. We also calculate small portions of the energy spectra of the $(3,2)$ and $(4,1)$ systems at unitarity.

On the kinetic energy of unitary Fermi gas in a harmonic trap

A. L. Zubarev, M. Zoubarev

We have considered the orbital-free approximation of the kinetic energy functional to investigate the zero-temperature properties of dilute harmonically trapped two-component Fermi gas at unitarity. It is shown that our approach provides a realible and inexpensive method to study superfluid strongly interacting dilute Fermi gases.

Virial theorems for trapped cold atoms

Félix Werner

We present a general virial theorem for quantum particles with arbitrary zero-range or finite-range interactions in an arbitrary external potential. We deduce virial theorems for several situations relevant to trapped cold atoms: zero-range interactions with and without Efimov effect, hard spheres, narrow Feshbach resonances, and finite-range interactions. If the scattering length $a$ is varied adiabatically in a two-component Fermi gas, we find that the trapping potential energy as a function of $1∕a$ has an inflexion point at unitarity.

Virial theorem for confined universal Fermi gases

John E. Thomas

Optically-trapped two-component Fermi gases near a broad Feshbach resonance exhibit universal thermodynamics, where the properties of the gas are independent of the details of the two-body scattering interactions. We present a global proof that such a universal gas obeys the virial theorem for {\it any} trapping potential $U$ and any spin mixture, without assuming either the local density approximation or harmonic confinement. The total energy of the gas is given in scale invariant form by $E=$, where $ε$ is an {\it arbitrary} energy scale in terms of which all length and energy scales that appear in the confining potential are written. This result enables model-independent energy measurement in traps that are anharmonic as well as anisotropic by observing only the cloud profile, and provides a consistency check for many-body calculations in the universal regime.

Analytic treatment of interacting Fermi gas in an arbitrary dimensional harmonic trap

Hiroyuki Yoshimoto, Susumu Kurihara

We study normal state properties of an interacting Fermi gas in an isotropic harmonic trap of arbitrary dimensions. We exactly calculate the first-order perturbation terms in the ground-state energy and chemical potential, and obtain simple analytic expressions of the total energy and chemical potential. At zero temperature, we find that the Thomas–Fermi approximation agrees well with the exact results for any dimension even though the system is small. In the high-temperature (classical) region, we find the interaction energy decreases in proportion to T − d /2 , where T is the temperature and d is the dimension of the system.
