Two-Photon Coherent Polarization Flipping of Confined Excitons

Abstract

A two-photon process leading to coherent transitions between the two circularly polarized exciton states in a quantum dot is studied. It is shown that optical flipping of the exciton polarization is possible with picosecond laser pulses. The process is closely related to two-photon Rabi oscillations of a biexciton but it is much more stable against shifts of the laser frequency.

Abstract The paper discusses two‐photon Rabi oscillations between the ground state of a quantum dot and the biexciton state, as well as two‐photon oscillations between the two single‐exciton states with different circular polarizations. The effect of phonon‐induced decoherence on these processes is also described. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Theory of two-photon processes in quantum dots: Coherent evolution and phonon-induced dephasing

Paweł Machnikowski

The paper discusses coherent control of charge and spin states of a biexciton system in a quantum dot via coherent two-photon transitions. Rabi oscillations between the ground state of a quantum dot and the biexciton state, as well as oscillations between the two single-exciton states induced by laser pulses with different circular or linear polarizations are studied. The effect of phonon-induced decoherence on these processes is described. System properties and driving conditions that lead to optimal coherent control are identified. It is shown that proper optimization allows one to control the two-qubit biexciton system via two-photon transitions with a high fidelity.

We use a resonant circularly polarized picosecond laser pulse to write a coherent superposition of exciton's states. We use a second, delayed circularly polarized pulse, tuned into the biexciton resonance to read the exciton's state.

Two-photon Rabi oscillations in a single In x Ga 1 − x As ∕ Ga As quantum dot

Stefan Stufler, Paweł Machnikowski, Patrick Ester +4 more

We report on Rabi oscillations of the biexciton in a single ${\mathrm{In}}_{x}{\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{As}∕\mathrm{Ga}\mathrm{As}$ quantum dot, induced via a coherent two-photon process. In contrast to single-exciton Rabi oscillations the measured population oscillation is not purely sinusoidal in excitation pulse area. The experimental results are well reproduced by a theoretical calculation that relies only on the pulse shape and biexciton binding energy. Dephasing times of the biexciton are similar to those of the single exciton under the applied measurement conditions reaching up to $220\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ps}$.

Förster Blockade and Excitation Transfer Behaviors of Two-Photon Rabi Oscillations of Exciton–Biexciton Levels in Coupled Quantum Dots

Ameenah N. Al‐Ahmadi

We provide a theoretical study for the dynamical behavior of two-photon Rabi oscillations in two coupled quantum dots. Each dot is a three-level quantum system (ground, one-exciton, and biexciton states). We describe the optical dynamics within the density matrix formalism framework. The two-photon Rabi oscillations are found to be significantly affected by the strength of the interdot dipolar interaction. Using a detuned laser pulse with an exciton state of the driven quantum dot in our numerical simulations, a direct coherent excitation between the biexciton states can be established, but whether Rabi oscillations can be observed depend mainly on the strength of the dipolar interaction and bandwidth of the excitation laser. When the strength of the dipolar coupling is less than the excitation laser bandwidth, the time-dependent populations of the various two biexciton states of the system exhibit coherent oscillations with several frequencies. However, as we increase the dipolar coupling strength, the population transfer between the quantum dots levels amazingly becomes forbidden, and the excitation gets trapped at the initial state. The reduction of the influence of the dipolar interaction leads to a manipulation of two-photon Rabi oscillation in an ultrashort timescale (∼ps), opening possibilities to achieve ultrafast quantum state control and quantum logic gate generation.

Quantum-bit rotations in single quantum dots: Rabi oscillations of excitons and biexcitons

Xiaoqin Li, Todd H. Stievater, Yanwen Wu +1 more

Summary form only given. We use transient nonlinear optical spectroscopy to demonstrate Rabi oscillations between each of the dipole coupled states, corresponding to qubit rotations. The interface fluctuation GaAs quantum dots are probed with sub-micron spatial resolution. The resonant excitation of the biexciton requires a two-color scheme in a hyper Raman gain configuration. To demonstrate exciton Rabi oscillations, the laser wavelength is fixed at the exciton resonance. Exciton and biexciton Rabi oscillations correspond to qubit rotations of the |00> to |01> or |10> state and the |01> or |10> to |11> state respectively, depending on the polarization of the excitation field.
