Entangled-state cycles of atomic collective-spin states

Abstract

We study quantum trajectories of collective atomic spin states of $N$ effective two-level atoms driven with laser and cavity fields. We show that interesting ``entangled-state cycles'' arise probabilistically when the (Raman) transition rates between the two atomic levels are set equal. For odd (even) $N$, there are $(N+1)/2$ $(N/2)$ possible cycles. During each cycle the $N$-qubit state switches, with each cavity photon emission, between the states $(|N/2,m⟩\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}|N/2,\ensuremath{-}m⟩)/\sqrt{2}$, where $|N/2,m⟩$ is a Dicke state in a rotated collective basis. The quantum number $m$ $(>0)$, which distinguishes the particular cycle, is determined by the photon counting record and varies randomly from one trajectory to the next. For even $N$ it is also possible, under the same conditions, to prepare probabilistically (but in steady state) the Dicke state $|N/2,0⟩$, i.e., an $N$-qubit state with $N/2$ excitations, which is of particular interest in the context of multipartite entanglement.

Generation of spin cat states in an engineered Dicke model

Caspar Groiseau, Stuart J. Masson, A. S. Parkins

We study trajectories of collective spin states of an ensemble of spinors. The spinors considered here are either trapped ions in free space or atoms confined in a cavity, both systems of which are engineered through their interactions with light fields to obey an effective Dicke model. In an appropriate limit of the Dicke model, one obtains one-axis twisting dynamics of the collective spin and evolution after a finite time to a spin cat state or, in the long-time limit, the Dicke state ${|S,0\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{x}$, conditioned upon there being no photon emissions from the system (i.e., no quantum jumps). If there is a jump, however, the system evolves probabilistically into one of a finite number of entangled-state cycles, where the system then undergoes a persistent sequence of jumps between two Dicke-state superpositions in a rotated basis. The different cycles can be distinguished by the frequency at which jumps occur.

Solvable dynamics of N driven two-level atoms coupled to a dissipative cavity mode

Matteo Bina, Federico Casagrande, ALFREDO LULLI

We solve exactly the dynamics of N strongly driven two-level atoms equally coupled on resonance to a dissipative cavity mode. Analytical results are derived on decoherence, entanglement, purity, atomic correlations and cavity field mean photon number. Decoherence-free subspaces are predicted for the whole system and the N -qubit subsystem. Multi-partite entangled states and cavity cat-like states can be conditionally generated. The decay of quantum coherence and purity can be monitored by joint measurements on atomic populations. Atoms prepared in states invariant under permutation of any two components evolve within the subspace spanned by the completely symmetric Dicke states. Applications to N = 3, 4 are discussed.

How to measure the quantum state of collective atomic spin excitation

Koji Usami, Jun-ichi Takahashi, Mikio Kozuma

The spin state of an atomic ensemble can be viewed as two bosonic modes, i.e., a quantum signal mode and a $c$-numbered ``local oscillator'' mode when large numbers of spin-1/2 atoms are spin polarized along a certain axis and collectively manipulated within the vicinity of the axis. We present a concrete procedure, which determines the spin-excitation-number distribution, i.e., the diagonal elements of the density matrix in the Dicke basis for the collective spin state. By seeing the collective spin state as a statistical mixture of the inherently entangled Dicke states, the physical picture of its multiparticle entanglement is made clear.

Entanglement between collective fields via atomic coherence effects

Xiu Zhang, Xiangming Hu

We explore the quantum entanglement between two collective fields via atomic coherence effects. For three-level atoms in $\mathsf{V}$ configuration driven by two applied fields on two-photon resonance, one coherent superposition of the excited states is not excited, which is the counterpart of coherent population trapping. The coherence-induced depopulation makes two cavity fields in each collection combine into a quantum-beat, i.e., equivalently, the difference mode of the two components decouples from the driven atoms. The two sum modes, when they are arranged in the four-wave mixinglike interactions, can be prepared in Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entangled state. Correspondingly, any two individual fields from different collective modes are entangled with each other. Furthermore, the effects of thermal reservoir and laser linewidths are discussed, and a generalization is given to the case in which each quantum beat involves more than two modes.

Entanglement of a Photon and a Collective Atomic Excitation

Dzmitry Matsukevich, T. Chanelière, Mishkatul Bhattacharya +4 more

We describe a new experimental approach to probabilistic atom-photon (signal) entanglement. Two qubit states are encoded as orthogonal collective spin excitations of an unpolarized atomic ensemble. After a programmable delay, the atomic excitation is converted into a photon (idler). Polarization states of both the signal and the idler are recorded and are found to be in violation of the Bell inequality. Atomic coherence times exceeding several microseconds are achieved by switching off all the trapping fields--including the quadrupole magnetic field of the magneto-optical trap--and zeroing out the residual ambient magnetic field.

“Macroscopic” quantum superpositions: Atom-field entangled and steady states by two-photon processes

Moorad Alexanian, Subir K. Bose

The dynamics of an exact two-photon Hamiltonian is used to study the time evolution of an initially disentangled pure state of the atom-field system as it goes through cycles of entanglement separated by instances of disentanglement. For specific initial states of the electromagnetic field, the output state is a pure quantum superposition of a squeezed vacuum state and an orthogonal, odd-photon-number state. The odd-photon-number state, which is not a squeezed state, exhibits both nonclassical sub-Poissonian and classical super-Poissonian photon statistics. In the latter case the quantum superposition resembles a macroscopic superposition state. Conditions are obtained on the atom-cavity interaction time for such states to represent the steady states in the injection in a high-$Q$ cavity of a monoenergetic, low-density beam of three-level atoms in a coherent state.
