Abstract

We investigate the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a classically chaotic system, which describes an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an optical lattice and driven by a spatiotemporal periodic laser field. It is demonstrated that the exact Floquet states appear when the external time-dependent potential is balanced by the nonlinear mean-field interaction. The balance region of parameters is divided into a phase-continuing region and a phase-jumping one. In the latter region, the Floquet states are spatiotemporal vortices of nontrivial phase structures and zero-density cores. Due to the velocity singularities of vortex cores and the blowing-up of perturbed solutions, the spatiotemporal vortices are unstable periodic states embedded in chaos. The stability and instability of these Floquet states are numerically explored by the time evolution of fidelity between the exact and numerical solutions. It is numerically illustrated that the stable Floquet states could be prepared from the uniformly initial states by slow growth of the external potential.

Exact Floquet States of Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Three-modeLaser-driven Optical Lattice

Wen Ling-Hua

We investigate the exact nonstationary states of three-component Bose-Einstein condensates(BECs) in a three-mode laser-driven optical lattice by using the mean-field theory.Starting with a set of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii(GP) equations describing one-dimensional(1D) three-component BECs,we obtain a set of equivalent uncoupled GP equations via three introduced interaction constants and the balance condition between the mean-field interaction and the external potential. It is shown that for appropriate parameter regions the system surports exact Floquet states which evolve periodically in spatiotemporal domain. In addition, the evolution properties of the particle denstiy, the phase, the velocity and the current density are analyzed and discussed.

Exact Floquet states of a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate induced by a laser standing wave

Haiming Deng, Wenhua Hai, Qianquan Zhu

Based on the idea of balance between the internal and external potentials, it is shown that for a two-component Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in an optical lattice the presence of a spacetime periodic laser field can induce a family of exact Floquet states (EFSs). The atomic-number densities of the EFSs are illustrated and the atomic current, phase blowing-up and the quantum reflection are investigated. The balance conditions and blowing-up region on parameter space are found, and the influences of phase blowing-up to the velocity fields, flow densities are revealed. It is demonstrated that the BEC motions can be controlled by adjusting the laser frequency, wave vector and amplitude.

Stationary Classical Chaos of Trapped Two-Component Bose–Einstein Condensates in 1-D Optical Lattice Potentials

Jianshu Fang, Wing‐Ki Liu, Zhu Shan-Hua

We study the nonlinear dynamics of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates in one-dimensional periodic optical lattice potentials. The stationary state perturbation solutions of the coupled two-component nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross–Pitaevskii equations are constructed by using the direct perturbation method. Theoretical analysis revels that the perturbation solution is the chaotic one, which indicates the existence of chaos and chaotic region in parameter space. The corresponding numerical calculation results agree well with the analytical results. By applying the chaotic perturbation solution, we demonstrate the atomic spatial population and the energy distribution of the system are chaotic generally.

Faraday pattern formations in temporally driven Rydberg-dressed Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate both analytically and numerically the dynamics of Rydberg-dressed Bose-Einstein condensates subjected to periodic modulation of the nonlocal repulsive interactions in time through temporally modulated control laser field. We show that, by utilizing such a control laser field, the nonlocal nonlinear interactions may be tuned actively, and hence a plane-wave state of matter wave can undergo a roton instability (RI) and Faraday instability (FI) simultaneously or separately, depending on the choice of the system parameters. Specifically, based on Floquet stability analysis, we find the evolution of small perturbations of the background allows the instability growth, thereby identifying instability regions with respect to density waves. Furthermore, we find that among other modes of the system the roton mode is most effectively excited due to a significant contribution of subharmonics of the excitation frequency. From the direct numerical simulations of nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and the Fourier analysis on profile of the density waves, we further show the frequency of temporal oscillations of density waves coincides with half of the driving frequency, which, therefore, is the evidence of the parametric resonance and is characteristic of Faraday waves. In addition, an interesting possibility would be to generate a steady stand-wave in the condensate which can persist after the creation even though canceling the modulation, and finally the two-dimensional Faraday waves are excited through manipulating local or nonlocal nonlinear coefficients in the system.
