Abstract: Magic state cultivation is a newly proposed protocol that represents the state of the art in magic state generation. It uses the transversality of the HXY\text{H}_{XY} gate on the 2d triangular color-code, together with a novel grafting mechanism to transform the color-code into a matchable code with minimal overhead. Still, the resulting code has a longer cycle time and some high weight stabilizers. Here, we introduce a new cultivation protocol that avoids grafting, by exploiting the transversality of the controlled-X (CX) operation on all CSS codes. Our protocol projects a pairs of low distance surface codes into a magic CX-eigenstate, and expands them to larger surface codes after post-selection. The effect of erasure qubits on both types of cultivation is analyzed, showing how it can be used to further reduce the logical error rate of cultivation. Importantly, CX cultivation uses non-local connectivity, and benefits from platforms with native Toffoli gates (CCX\text{CCX}), both of which were recently demonstrated with Rydberg atoms.
