States interpolating between number and coherent states and their interaction with atomic systems

Abstract

Using the eigenvalue definition of binomial states we construct new intermediate number-coherent states which reduce to number and coherent states in two different limits. We reveal the connection of these intermediate states with photon-added coherent states and investigate their non-classical properties and quasiprobability distributions in detail. It is of interest to note that these new states, which interpolate between coherent states and number states, neither of which exhibit squeezing, are nevertheless squeezed states. A scheme to produce these states is proposed. We also study the interaction of these states with atomic systems in the framework of the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model, and describe the response of the atomic system as it varies between the pure Rabi oscillation and the collapse-revival mode and investigate field observables such as photon number distribution, entropy and the Q -function.

Interaction of Interpolating Number-Coherent States with Atomic Systems

Yinqi Feng, Hong‐Chen Fu, A. I. Solomon

Interpolating number-coherent states are new states of the radiation field which interpolate between number and coherent states, to which they reduce in appropriate limits. We study some fundamental features of the interaction of these new states with a atomic system in the framework of the Jaynes-Cummings model(JCM). The dynamical evolution of atomic population inversion, field entropy, the Q-function and photon number distribution properties are investigated in detail. 1

Effects of the Binomial Field Distribution on Collapse and Revival Phenomena in the Jaynes-Cummings Model

Amitabh Joshi, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

The dynamical properties of a two-level atom interacting with a single non-decaying mode of an electromagnetic field in a binomial state are studied. The statistical aspects of the field, such as intensity-intensity correlation and squeezing, are also investigated. The binomial state reduces to a pure number state and a pure coherent state in different limits. Hence it enables us to study how the sinusoidal Rabi oscillations in a pure number state develop to give rise to the phenomenon of collapse and revival which has been studied extensively in the coherent-state field. In addition, the binomial state exhibits squeezing for certain values of parameters, but it is not a minimum-uncertainty-product state.

Interaction of Squeezed Light with Two-level Atoms

H. M. Moya-Cessa, A. Vidiella-Barranco

We investigate some of the fundamental features of the interaction of squeezed light with two-level atoms in the framework of the Jaynes-Cummings model. We start our analysis by calculating the collapses and revivals of the atomic inversion. We discuss the degree of purity of the field (given by the entropy) and its disentanglement from the atomic source. The connection with the evolution of the Q-function is also made. We notice that contrary to the coherent state case, the field turns into a nearly pure (squeezed) state at the revival time as if the field was prepared in a coherent state. The field also becomes a superposition of squeezed states at half of the revival time, and this is confirmed by investigating the photon number distribution. The phase properties of the field are discussed using the Pegg-Barnett formalism.

Quantum Rabi oscillations in coherent and squeezed coherent states via one- and two-photon transitions

Moorad Alexanian

We determine the Rabi oscillations for coherent and squeezed coherent states via one- and two-photon atomic transitions in two- and three-level atoms, respectively. The effect of squeezing coherent states is to reduce the large number of photons of mesoscopic scale to fewer photons and so be able to use numerical solutions with the aid of the Jaynes-Cummings model. We maximize the squeezing of the coherent state by minimizing the ratio of the photon number variance to photon number, thus narrowing the region where revival occurs.

Atomic and entanglement dynamics in the mixed squeezed coherent state version of the Jaynes-Cummings interaction

Koushik Mandal, Pooja Jethwani, Satyanarayana, M. Venkata

Coherent signal containing squeezed noise in a mixed state of radiation field is considered here as a non-Gaussian mixture of a coherent state density operator and a squeezed state density operator, as opposed to the usual well known squeezed coherent state. Both these states are `quantum' noise-included signal states. Effects of these two distinct ways of adding squeezing to a coherent state are compared and contrasted. The main objective of this work is to study the mixed state version of the Jaynes-Cummings model in the context of a two-level atom interacting with a mixed field state of a squeezed vacuum and a coherent state. The pure squeezed coherent state (PSCS) and the mixed squeezed coherent state (MSCS) are used as the states of the radiation field. The photon-counting distribution (PCD), the atomic inversion and the entanglement dynamics of atom-field interaction for both the radiation fields are investigated and compared with each other. We observe that depending on the state of the field, squeezing has very different effects on coherent photons. Mild squeezing on the coherent photons strongly localizes the PCD for PSCS; however, for MSCS there is no such localization observed - instead squeezing manifests for MSCS as oscillations in the PCD. The effects of squeezing on the atomic inversion and the entanglement dynamics for MSCS are contrasting in comparison with the corresponding quantities associated with PSCS. It is well known in the literature that for PSCS, increasing the squeezing increases the well-known ringing revivals in the atomic inversion, and also increases irregularity in the entanglement dynamics. However, increasing the squeezing in MSCS very significantly alters the collapse-revival pattern in the atomic inversion and the entanglement dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings model.

Squeezing in Correlated Quantum Systems

Stephen Mark Barnett, P. L. Knight

We discuss the connection between quantum correlations and squeezing in simple quantum optical systems. We illustrate this connection by a study of two-mode states of light produced by parametric down-conversion and similar two-photon processes. The intermode correlations in these systems are shown to be responsible for modifications in photon-number sum and difference operators, and for squeezing in the superpositions of the two modes. The disappearance of the diagonal coherent-state quasiprobability function P(α) when non-classical light properties are important is noted, and alternative and better-behaved Wigner functions and coherent-state expectation Q-functions for the two-mode system are developed.
