Abstract

In the theory of quantum transmission of information the concept of fidelity plays a fundamental role. An important class of channels, which can be experimentally realized in quantum optics, is that of Gaussian quantum channels. In this work we present a general formula for fidelity in the case of two arbitrary Gaussian states. From this formula one can get a previous result [H. Scutaru, J. Phys. A 31, 3659 (1998)], for the case of a single mode. The concept of fidelity used in this paper is the standard one [D. Bures, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 135, 199 (1969); A. Uhlmann, Rep. Math. Phys. 9, 273 (1976); R. Josza, J. Mod. Opt. 41, 2314 (1994)]. It can be defined by $F({\ensuremath{\rho}}_{1},{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{2}{)}^{\underset{=}{\mathrm{def}}}{\mathrm{max}}_{|{\ensuremath{\psi}}_{1}〉,|{\ensuremath{\psi}}_{2}〉}|〈{\ensuremath{\psi}}_{1}|{\ensuremath{\psi}}_{2}〉{|}^{2},$ where $|{\ensuremath{\psi}}_{i}〉,$ $i=1,2$ are purifications of the density matrices ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{i}.$

Quantum Fidelity for Arbitrary Gaussian States

Leonardo Banchi, Samuel L. Braunstein, Stefano Pirandola

We derive a computable analytical formula for the quantum fidelity between two arbitrary multimode Gaussian states which is simply expressed in terms of their first- and second-order statistical moments. We also show how such a formula can be written in terms of symplectic invariants and used to derive closed forms for a variety of basic quantities and tools, such as the Bures metric, the quantum Fisher information, and various fidelity-based bounds. Our result can be used to extend the study of continuous-variable protocols, such as quantum teleportation and cloning, beyond the current one-mode or two-mode analyses, and paves the way to solve general problems in quantum metrology and quantum hypothesis testing with arbitrary multimode Gaussian resources.

Bures fidelity for diagonalizable quadratic Hamiltonians in multi-mode systems

Xiang‐Bin Wang, L. C. Kwek, C. H. Oh

Fidelity, as a measure of the distinguishability of states, is an important concept in quantum mechanics, quantum optics and quantum information theory. Recently, the explicit expressions of fidelity for single-mode squeezed states have been given. However, in experimental studies, especially in non-degenerate parametric down-conversion, two photons are generated and one studies two- or more-mode systems. In this paper we study the Bures fidelity for thermal states of a diagonalizable quadratic Hamiltonian in multi-mode Fock space. To the best of our knowledge, no one has yet attempted to give an explicit general formula of fidelity of mixed states in multi-mode systems.

Uhlmann fidelity between two-mode Gaussian states

Paulina Marian, Tudor A. Marian

We analyze the Uhlmann fidelity of a pair of $n$-mode Gaussian states of the quantum radiation field. This quantity is shown to be the product of an exponential function depending on the relative average displacement and a factor fully determined by the symplectic spectrum of the covariance matrix of a specific Gaussian state. However, it is difficult to handle our general formula unless the Gaussian states commute or at least one of them is pure. On the contrary, in the simplest cases $n=1$ and $n=2$, it leads to explicit analytic formulas. Our main result is a calculable expression of the fidelity of two arbitrary two-mode Gaussian states. This can be applied to build reliable measures of quantum correlations between modes in various branches of quantum physics.

Fidelity for displaced squeezed thermal states and the oscillator semigroup

Horia Scutaru

The fidelity for two displaced squeezed thermal states is computed using the fact that the corresponding density operators belong to the oscillator semigroup. A novel calculation technique is developed for the computation of the traces of product of Gaussian density operators and of square roots of Gaussian density operators. The method is exemplified for the one-mode case but it is also applicable to the multimode case.

Optimal measurements for quantum fidelity between Gaussian states and its relevance to quantum metrology

Changhun Oh, Changhyoup Lee, Leonardo Banchi +3 more

Quantum fidelity is a measure to quantify the closeness between two quantum states. In an operational sense, it is defined as the minimal overlap between the probability distributions of measurement outcomes and the minimum is taken over all possible positive-operator valued measures (POVMs). Quantum fidelity has been investigated in various scientific fields, but the identification of associated optimal measurements has often been overlooked despite its great importance both for fundamental interest and practical purposes. We find here the optimal POVMs for quantum fidelity between multimode Gaussian states in a closed analytical form. Our general finding is applied for selected single-mode Gaussian states of particular interest and we identify three types of optimal measurements: an excitation-number-resolving detection, a projection onto the eigenbasis of operator $\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{x}\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{p}+\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{p}\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{x}$, and a quadrature variable detection, each of which corresponds to distinct types of single-mode Gaussian states. We also show the equivalence between optimal measurements for quantum fidelity and those for quantum parameter estimation when two arbitrary states are infinitesimally close. It is applied for simplifying the derivations of quantum Fisher information and the associated optimal measurements, exemplified by displacement, phase, squeezing, and loss parameter estimation using Gaussian states.

Quantum Correlation Based on Uhlmann Fidelity for Gaussian States

Liang Liu, Jinchuan Hou, Xiaofei Qi

A quantum correlation N F G , A for ( n + m ) -mode continuous-variable systems is introduced in terms of local Gaussian unitary operations performed on Subsystem A based on Uhlmann fidelity F. This quantity is a remedy for the local ancilla problem associated with the geometric measurement-induced correlations; is local Gaussian unitary invariant; is non-increasing under any Gaussian quantum channel performed on Subsystem B;and is an entanglement monotone when restricted to pure Gaussian states in the ( 1 + m ) -mode case. A concrete formula for ( 1 + 1 ) -mode symmetric squeezed thermal states (SSTSs) is presented. We also compare N F G , A with other quantum correlations in scale, such as Gaussian quantum discord and Gaussian geometric discord, for two-mode SSTSs, which reveals that N F G , A has some advantage in detecting quantum correlations of Gaussian states.
