Stochastic wave-function method for non-Markovian quantum master equations

Abstract

A generalization of the stochastic wave-function method to quantum master equations which are not in Lindblad form is developed. The proposed stochastic unraveling is based on a description of the reduced system in a doubled Hilbert space and it is shown that this method is capable of simulating quantum master equations with negative transition rates. Non-Markovian effects in the reduced systems dynamics can be treated within this approach by employing the time-convolutionless projection operator technique. This ansatz yields a systematic perturbative expansion of the reduced systems dynamics in the coupling strength. Several examples such as the damped Jaynes-Cummings model and the spontaneous decay of a two-level system into a photonic band gap are discussed. The power as well as the limitations of the method are demonstrated.

Stochastic wave-function unraveling of the generalized Lindblad master equation

Mervlyn Moodley, Francesco Petruccione

Recently a generalized master equation was derived that extends the Lindblad theory to highly non-Markovian quantum processes [H.-P. Breuer, Phys. Rev. A 75, 022103 (2007)]. We perform a stochastic unraveling of this master equation by considering $n$ random state vectors that satisfy the corresponding stochastic differential equation for a piecewise deterministic process. As an application we consider a two-state system randomly coupled to an environment consisting of two energy bands with finite number of levels. Our numerical results are compared to results obtained from the time-convolutionless projection operator method using correlated projection superoperators and the exact solution of the Schr\"odinger equation for this system.

Non-Markovian Dynamics in Physical Systems

Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Francesco Petruccione

Abstract This chapter applies the time-convolutionless projection operator technique to some typical systems featuring strong non-Markovian behaviour. The first example models the decay of a two-level system into a reservoir with arbitrary spectral density. For this problem the expansion of the master equation is carried out to all orders in the system-reservoir coupling. As specific cases the damped Jaynes–Cummings model and the spontaneous decay into a photonic band gap are studied. The model is used to exemplify the breakdown of the expansion in the strong coupling regime, and to illustrate the emergence of completely positive master equations which are not in Lindblad form and involve negative decay rates. The chapter also treats the non-Markovian dynamics in quantum Brownian motion and in the spin-boson model, and illustrates the stochastic unravelling of non-Markovian quantum processes.

Quantum jump unravelings for non-Markovian open system dynamics: a review

Federico Settimo, Jyrki Piilo

Stochastic unravelings provide a useful way to represent open quantum system dynamics in terms of pure state realizations, and have been widely studied both from a fundamental and from a computational point of view. They were initially formulated for Markovian dynamics described by the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation. However, due to recent technological and experimental development, most physical relevant dynamics present temporal correlations beyond the Markov approximation. Such correlations cause decay rates to turn temporarily negative, thus requiring the generalization of stochastic unravelings from Markovian to non-Markovian scenarios. Indeed, many unraveling techniques have been introduced in this regime, and a comprehensive review of the different jump methods is currently missing. In this work, we provide an overview of widely used quantum jump unraveling techniques for non-Markovian systems and also discuss them in terms of their numerical efficiency, divisibility requirements, Hilbert space extension, and measurement interpretation.

Stochastic unraveling of time-local quantum master equations beyond the Lindblad class

Ulrich Kleinekathöfer, Ivan Kondov, Michael Schreiber

A method for stochastic unraveling of general time-local quantum master equations (QME) which involve the reduced density operator at time t only is proposed. The present kind of jump algorithm enables a numerically efficient treatment of QMEs that are not of Lindblad form. So it opens large fields of application for stochastic methods. The unraveling can be achieved by allowing for trajectories with negative weight. We present results for the quantum Brownian motion and the Redfield QMEs as test examples. The algorithm can also unravel non-Markovian QMEs when they are in a time-local form like in the time-convolutionless formalism.

Stochastic wave-function unravelling of the generalized Lindblad equation using correlated states

Mervlyn Moodley, S Paul, T Nsio Nzundu

We perform a stochastic wave-function unravelling of the generalized Lindblad master equation using correlated states, a combination of the system state vectors and the environment population. The time-convolutionless projection operator method using correlated projection superoperators is applied to a two-state system, a qubit, that is coupled to an environment consisting of two energy bands which are both populated. These results are compared to the data obtained from Monte Carlo wave-function simulations based on the unravelling of the master equation. We also show a typical quantum trajectory and the average time evolution of the state vector on the Bloch sphere.

Projection Operator Techniques

Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Francesco Petruccione

Abstract This chapter is devoted to the foundations and to the basic mathematical structure of the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of open systems. It gives a survey of the Nakajima–Zwanzig projection operator methods with the help of which one derives so-called generalized master equations for the reduced system dynamics. In the non-Markovian regime, these master equations involve a retarded memory kernel, i.e. a time-convolution integral taken over the history of the reduced system. The chapter also describes an alternative method of particular relevance in many applications, which is based on a time-local quantum master equation, and which is known as the time-convolutionless projection operator method. This method serves as a starting point for a systematic expansion in terms of ordered cumulants and forms the basis for a non-Markovian stochastic unravelling of the reduced system dynamics.
