Quantum Superposition of Parametrically Amplified Multiphoton Pure States whitin a Decoherence-Free Schroedinger-Cat Structure

Abstract

The new process of quantum-injection into an optical parametric amplifier operating in entangled configuration is adopted to amplify into a large dimensionality spin 1/2 Hilbert space the quantum entanglement and superposition properties of the photon-couples generated by parametric down-conversion. The structure of the Wigner function and of the field's correlation functions shows a decoherence-free, multiphoton Schroedinger-cat behaviour of the emitted field which is largely detectable against the squeezed-vacuum noise. Furthermore, owing to its entanglement character, the system is found to exhibit multi-particle quantum nonseparability and Bell-type nonlocality properties. These relevant quantum features are analyzed for several travelling-wave optical configurations implying different input quantum-injection schemes

Amplification of Quantum Entanglement

The new process of quantum injection into an optical parametric amplifier operating in entangled configuration is adopted to ``amplify'' into a large dimensionality spin- $\frac{1}{2}$ Hilbert space the quantum entanglement and superposition properties of the photon couples generated by parametric down-conversion. The structure of the Wigner function and of the field's correlation functions shows a decoherence-free multiphoton Schroedinger-cat behavior of the emitted field which is largely detectable against the squeezed-vacuum noise.

A new class of all-optical Parametric Schroedinger-cats

S. Branca, F. De Martini, F. Mariani +1 more

The process of quantum-injection into an amplifier operating in a novel entangled configuration is adopted to “amplify” into a large dimensionality spin-12 Hilbert space the superposition properties of the entangled photon-couples generated by parametric down-conversion. The process is applied to the cases of mode-degenerate and mode non-degenerate Parametric Amplification. The quantum structure of the Wigner function and of the field correlation functions shows in both cases that the Schroedinger-cat behavior of the emitted field is largely detectable against the squeezed-vacuum noise. The absence of decoherence is explained in terms of a basic property of nonlinear complex systems.

Universal Quantum Cloning and Macroscopic Superposition in Parametric Amplification

F. De Martini, Valentina Mussi

The new process of quantum-injection into an optical parametric amplifier operating in entangled configuration is adopted to amplify into a large dimensionality spin-½ Hilbert space the quantum entanglement and superposition properties of the photon-couples generated by parametric down-conversion. The invariance properties of the OPA interaction hamiltonian show that, under certain conditions, the device may act as a Universal Quantum Cloning Machine (UQCM) of the input qubits. Preliminary results here reported show the first experimental realization of such a device. The structure of the Wigner function and of the field's correlation functions shows a multiphoton Schrödinger-cat behaviour of the emitted field which is largely detectable against the squeezed-vacuum noise.

Wigner-function theory and decoherence of the quantum-injected optical parametric amplifier

Nicolò Spagnolo, Chiara Vitelli, Tiziano De Angelis +2 more

Recent experimental results demonstrated the generation of a macroscopic quantum superposition (MQS), involving a number of photons in excess of $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{4}$, which showed a high resilience to losses. In order to perform a complete analysis on the effects of decoherence on these multiphoton fields, obtained through the quantum injected optical parametric amplifier, we investigate theoretically the evolution of the Wigner functions associated to these states in lossy conditions. Recognizing the presence of negative regions in the $W$ representation as an evidence of nonclassicality, we focus our analysis on this feature. A close comparison with the MQS based on coherent $|\ensuremath{\alpha}⟩$ states allows us to identify differences and analogies.

Realization of a Classically Distinguishable Multi-photon Quantum Superposition

F. De Martini, Fabio Sciarrino

We report the successful generation of an entangled multiparticle quantum superposition of pure photon states. They result from a multiple universal cloning of a single photon qubit by a high gain, quantum-injected parametric amplifier. The information preserving property of the process suggests for these states the name of ”multi-particle qubits”. They are ideal objects for investigating the emergence of the classical world in quantum systems with increasing complexity, the decoherence processes and may allow the practical implementation of the universal 2-qubit logic gates. Typeset using REVTEX 1 Since the golden years of quantum mechanics the interference of classically distinguishable quantum states, first epitomized by the famous ”Schroedinger-Cat ” apologue [1] has been the object of extensive theoretical studies and recognized as a major conceptual paradigm of Physics [2,3]. Entanglement and Non-locality in a Micro-Macroscopic system

F. De Martini, Fabio Sciarrino, Chiara Vitelli

In recent years two fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics have attracted a great deal of interest, namely the investigation on the irreducible nonlocal properties of Nature implied by quantum entanglement and the physical realization of the 'Schroedinger Cat'. In the present work a macro - state consisting of about 3.5 x 10^4 photons in a quantum superposition and entangled with a far apart single - photon state is generated. Then, the non-separability of the overall micro-macro system is demonstrated and the corresponding Bell's inequalities are found to be violated. Precisely, an entangled photon pair is created by a nonlinear optical process, then one photon of the pair is injected into an optical parametric amplifier operating for any input polarization state, i.e. into a phase-covariant cloning machine. Such transformation establishes a connection between the single photon and the multi particle fields. We then demonstrate the non-separability of the bipartite system by adopting a local filtering technique within a positive operator valued measurement.
