Abstract

We investigate the quantum properties of fields generated by resonantly enhanced wave mixing based on atomic coherence in Raman systems. We show that such a process can be used for generation of pairs of Stokes and anti-Stokes fields with nearly perfect quantum correlations, yielding almost complete (i.e., $100%$) squeezing without the use of a cavity. We discuss the extension of the wave mixing interactions into the domain of a few interacting light quanta.

Squeezing Light with Atoms: Generation of Non-Classical Light via Four-Wave Mixing

Nathan Super

The goal of the project is to produce a pair of polarization-entangled light fields using four-wave mixing in hot Rb vapor. In this process, interaction of atoms with near-resonant strong control optical field results in strong amplification of a nearly-collinear probe optical field and in generation of a quantum correlated conjugate Stokes optical field. In order to establish the quantum correlation between the Stokes and probe fields, we have adopted a homodyne detection scheme. If the differential noise between the Stokes and probe fields is below the quantum noise limit, then intensity fluctuation entanglement has been achieved, and it is possible to produce the polarization Bell states.

Cooperative quantum correlations between Stokes and anti-Stokes modes in four-wave mixing

N. A. Enaki, Marina Ţurcan

We study the cooperative effects between Raman and hyper-Raman processes in which two quanta from a pumping field are absorbed and another two entangled photons are generated. The symmetries of the involved operators can be reduced to SU(2)-algebra in which the Casimir vector of quasi-momentum of the two fields is conserved. Quantum correlations between the pump and the generated field states are investigated. Cooperative stabilization of two-mode coherent states between Stokes and anti-Stokes photons is shown using both semiclassical and quantum approaches. We show that the relaxation of the system is described by coherent states of the two-mode field. The possibilities of observing cross-correlations between the pump field and the generated field are analyzed.

Quantum-enhanced coherent Raman spectroscopy with broadband squeezed-light detection

Konstantin E. Dorfman, Vladislav V. Yakovlev, Shaul Mukamel

Quantum correlations offer the possibility of surpassing classical limits in optical measurements, but their integration into nonlinear vibrational spectroscopy has remained largely unexplored. Here, we introduce a quantum-enhanced implementation of coherent Raman spectroscopy that employs broadband squeezed-light detection to interrogate relative intensity correlations between Stokes and anti-Stokes fields generated in an ultrafast four-wave-mixing process. By exploiting nonclassical correlations between these fields, we suppress the nonresonant background and enhance the signal-to-noise performance in both temporal and spectral domains, enabling detection sensitivities beyond the classical shot-noise limit. Importantly, the quantum advantage demonstrated here does not arise solely from improved detection statistics. Rather, it originates from microscopic intermolecular correlations mediated by cascaded exchange of a virtual photon between molecular pairs. This mechanism establishes a fundamentally distinct and significant pathway for information extraction in vibrational spectroscopy, providing access to structural and dynamical observables that are intrinsically inaccessible by conventional classical Raman techniques. Numerical simulations illustrate the power of the technique by resolving intradimer [Formula: see text] bond splitting in cyclobutane thymine dimers following ultraviolet excitation, highlighting its potential for probing ultrafast photochemical processes with quantum-limited sensitivity and for label-free biomedical optical sensing and imaging.

Quantum parametric double Raman oscillators with co- and counterpropagating fields: Relative intensity squeezing and spatial photon correlations

C. H. Raymond Ooi, Konstantin E. Dorfman

We present a comprehensive study of co- and counterpropagating Stokes and anti-Stokes quantum fields in double Raman four-wave mixing parametric oscillators using full quantum Heisenberg-Langevin framework with noise operators. General analytical solutions of the fields operators at any point in the Raman medium are obtained for four cases: two possible copropagating (forward) and two counterpropagating (backward) Stokes and anti-Stokes. We analyze the symmetrical properties of the complex linear and nonlinear susceptibilities spectra of the quantum fields, nonclassicality of two-photon correlation functions, spatial variations of the quantum fields, and the two-mode relative intensity squeezing. We compare the results of forward and backward cases for several limiting double Raman schemes. We find interesting resonant effects of medium length, laser detunings and laser field strengths (Rabi frequencies) for backward-propagating geometries. Analysis of the solutions provide insights on the resonant conditions while computation over multiple variables enables us to identify the values of laser detuning, field strength, and propagation length that give enhanced nonclassical intensity squeezing and persistent correlations. The present work sets the crucial foundations for optimization of the nonclassicality of photons in double Raman systems and would be useful for quantum information storage, quantum nonlinear optics, and quantum spectroscopy.

Quantum coherence and squeezing in stimulated Raman scattering

Joseph W. Haus, Kee Choon Yeong, Alexei Vladimirovich Chizhov

Two models are considered to examine quantum correlations between the Stokes and anti- Stokes fields generated in stimulated Raman processes; the first is a cavity model and the second treats propagating fields. The coherence introduced through the dynamics evolution are manifest through their higher-order correlation functions where sum-squeezed states are identified.

Coherent manipulation of the biphoton generation in cavity-QED system

Jia-Ni Yang, Xin-Yi Ling, Yuan Feng +2 more

We theoretically investigate the coherent manipulation of biphoton generation via spontaneous four-wave mixing in a cavity-QED system with a single atom. The atom is driven by pumping, coupling, and driving fields, and the generation of the Stokes and anti-Stokes photons are enhanced by two cavities. By solving the master equation in the steady state, we analyze the spectral brightness, as well as the degree of the auto-correlation and cross-correlation. Our results show that when the pumping and driving fields are in two-photon resonance, the dark state established between the ground and Rydberg states. efficiently enhances the controllability of the driving field over the biphoton generation and the quantum statistics. In contrast, under large two-photon detuning, the control capability of the driving field is significantly reduced. The coupling field, which directly relates to the electromagnetically induced transparency, modifies the linewidth of the biphoton, while the atom-cavity coupling strength only changes the brightness without affecting the linewidth.
