Abstract

Since its discovery in 1993, we witness an intensive theoretical and experimental effort centered on teleportation. Very recently it was claimed in the press that ``quantum teleportation has been achieved in the laboratory'' (T. Sudbery, Nature, 390, p. 551). Here, I briefly review this research focusing on the connection to nonlocal measurements, and question Sudbery's statement. A philosophical inquiry about the paradoxical meaning of teleportation in the framework of the many-worlds interpretation is added.

Is Teleportation a (quantum) mystery?

Since its discovery quantum teleportation has often been seen as a manifestation, indeed the epitome, of the very paradoxical and mysterious nature of quantum theory itself. It is commonly regarded as genuinely quantum and essentially paradoxical. Although a common approach to teleportation amongst physicists nowadays is a somewhat operational one, some researchers are making an effort to deflate the above views. On the one hand, it was recently argued that the paradox of information transfer taking place in teleportation is dissolved (Timpson, 2006) by appealing the very notion of information. On the other hand, it was demonstrated that some classical versions of teleportation retain its important features, which hitherto were considered genuinely quantum (Cohen, 2003; Collins&Popescu, 2002; Hardy, 1999; Mor, 2006; Spekkens, 2007). I will present a special version of a quantum teleportation protocol which is in a sense split into classical and quantum steps. This description provides us with a unified picture of teleportation in both domains. It will be explicitly shown how classical teleportation is embedded in the quantum protocol. Moreover, the classical step can be successfully accomplished even if the state shared by the parties is completely disentangled [this is consistent with the result obtained in (Wang, 2005)]. Yet, all the (apparent) paradoxical features usually associated with quantum teleportation are clearly present in this step. In particular, this demonstrates that entanglement cannot be ultimately responsible and not necessary for the (paradoxical?) information transfer. Thus, even if one considers teleportation as mysterious, all its mysteries are shifted from quantum domain into purely classical one.

THE OBSERVER PROBLEM IN MODERN PHYSICS: Reassessing Consciousness, Measurement, and the Nature of Reality Author: Yeshayahu Ben-Yehudah Affiliation: THE BEN-YEHUDAH INSTITUTE This scientific paper examines the observer problem in modern physics, focusing on the unresolved relationship between quantum measurement, consciousness, and the nature of physical reality. Although quantum mechanics has demonstrated extraordinary predictive accuracy, fundamental questions persist concerning the transition from probabilistic quantum states to definite observable outcomes. The research critically reassesses four major interpretations of quantum mechanics: the Copenhagen Interpretation, Many-Worlds Theory, Bohmian Mechanics, and Objective Collapse models. Each framework provides a distinct explanation of quantum measurement and wave function behavior, yet none has achieved universal scientific acceptance as a definitive resolution of the measurement problem. Central to this investigation is the distinction between physical measurement and conscious observation. The paper examines whether the observer should be understood solely as a measuring instrument, a participant within a mathematical framework, or a more fundamental component in the relationship between consciousness and experienced reality. Le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven and the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, reimagining reality-changing dreams as shifts between preexisting parallel worlds. By framing Le Guin's philosophical debate between Taoism and Utilitarianism in terms of the Copenhagen and many-worlds interpretations, the paper investigates profound questions about identity, human control, and the nature of reality.
