Abstract

We propose an efficient method to produce multiparticle entangled states of ions in an ion trap for which a wide range of interesting effects and applications have been suggested. Our preparation scheme exploits the collective vibrational motion of the ions, but it works in such a way that this motion need not be fully controlled in the experiment. The ions may, e.g., be in thermal motion and exchange mechanical energy with a surrounding heat bath without detrimental effects on the internal state preparation. Our scheme does not require access to the individual ions in the trap.

PREPARATION AND STORAGE OF ENTANGLED STATES FOR MULTIPLE TRAPPED IONS IN THERMAL MOTION

Wen‐Xing Yang, SU-ZHEN ZHANG

We present an alternative scheme to prepare entangled states of multiple trapped ions in thermal motion. In this scheme the vibrational degrees of freedom are only regarded as intermediate states and the ions exchange energy via the mediation of the vibration of the vibrational mode in coupling processes. The scheme is insensitive to both the initial vibrational state and heating if the system remains in the Lamb–Dicke regime. Since the effective Rabi frequency has a small dependence on the vibrational quantum number, the heating will have no direct effect on the internal state evolution. The scheme can also be used for the storage of entangled states.

Fast scheme for the generation of entangled states of multiple hot trapped ions

Shi‐Biao Zheng

We propose a simple and fast scheme for producing maximally entangled states for many trapped ions. The scheme only requires a single laser beam tuned to the ionic carrier frequency. Our scheme works in the regime, where the Rabi frequency is of the order of the vibrational frequency. Our scheme operates in a fast way and is insensitive to heating of vibrational motion, which is important in view of decoherence. Thus, our scheme opens promising prospects for entanglement engineering in a scalable way.

Ion Trap Quantum Computer with Bichromatic Light

Anders Søndberg Sørensen, Klaus Mølmer

In the ion trap quantum computer, quantum bits are represented by the internal state of the trapped ions, and the collective vibrations of the ions are exploited for the coherent manipulation of the state of several bits. We have developed a method to perform gates on different ions by illuminating the ions with bichromatic light. Our gates are independent of the motional state of the ions and they may be applied to ions in any state or, e.g., thermal mixture of vibrational states. Moreover, our proposal allows the production of multiparticle entangled states even in situations without experimental access to the individual ions in the trap. Maximally entangled states of any number of ions are produced by simply illuminating all ions with the same beams of bichromatic light.

Robust Entanglement for Multiple Trapped Ions in Thermal Motion

Zheng Shi-Biao

A robust scheme is proposed for producing maximally entangled states for many trapped ions in thermal motion. In the scheme the ions are simultaneously illuminated by two standing-wave laser fields. During the operation the phases of the lasers are inverted, which not only cancels the vibration-dependent parts in the evolution operator, but also suppresses direct off-resonant coupling of the internal states. Thus, our scheme allows the production of entanglement for hot trapped ions with laser fields of high intensity, which makes the entanglement speed extremely high.

Preparation of Entangled State for Trappedions

Zhang Su-zhen

We present an alternative scheme to prepare entangled states of three trapped ions in thermal motion. We simultaneously drive the three ions with two laser beams with diferent frequencies. In this scheme the vibrational degrees of freedom are only regarded as intermediate states and the ions exchange energy via the mediation of the vibration of the vibrational mode in coupling processes. So our scheme might be more simple and feasible.

Simple schemes for preparation of multipartite entangled states of trapped ions

Feng Zhong

Three experimentally feasible schemes are proposed for generating multipartite entangled states of cold trapped ions.In the first scheme,a GHZ state can be simply synthesized in a single step. The second scheme is to prepare fully symmetric W states with two steps. The third scheme describes the sequential generation of linear cluster states. In addition,a method to create a larger cluster state was also presented by fuzing the end qubits of two smaller cluster states in order to decrease the distortion caused by decoherence, which can speed up the generation of large cluster states. The above schemes involve the collective interaction between multiple ions with the vibrational ground state and a large detuned laser. Compared with previous schemes, the above schemes have four advantages.Firstly, they do not require the vibrational mode of ions as memory.Secondly, they do not need to address the ions individually.Thirdly, they are free from the effects of phase fluctuation of laser field. Finally, they need less operations.
