Abstract

We obtain analytic solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with negative scattering length in highly asymmetric traps. We find that in these traps the Bose-Einstein condensates behave like quasiparticles and do not expand when the trapping in one direction is eliminated. The results can be applicable to the control of the motion of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Matter-Wave Solitons in Two-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates with Time-Dependent Scattering Length in a Harmonic Trap

We present three families of one-soliton solutions for (2+l)-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation withboth time-dependent scattering length and gain or loss in a harmonic trap. Then we investigate the dynamics of thesesolitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) by some selected control functions. Our results show that the intensitiesof these solitons first increase rapidly to the condensation peak, then decay very slowly to the background;thus thelifetime of a bright soliton,a train of bright solitons and a dark soliton in BECs can be all greatly extended. Our resultsoffer a useful method for observing matter-wave solitons in BECs in future experiments.

Dynamics of Bright/Dark Solitons in Bose–Einstein Condensates with Time-Dependent Scattering Length and External Potential

Ai‐Xia Zhang, Xue Ju-Kui

We present an analytical study on the dynamics of bright and dark solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates with time-varying atomic scattering length in a time-varying external parabolic potential. A set of exact soliton solutions of the one-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equation are obtained, including fundamental bright solitons, higher-order bright solitons, and dark solitons. The results show that the soliton's parameters (amplitude, width, and period) can be changed in a controllable manner by changing the scattering length and external potential. This may be helpful to design experiments.

Spatial solitons of trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate

We present two families analytical solutions to the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), which describe the dynamics of bright and dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensations(BECs) with varying coefficients of two and three-body interactions in a parabolic and complex potential. The properties of the dynamical evolutions of the bright and dark matter-wave solitons are investigated. It is interesting that the matter-wave can be controlled by applying the external magnetic field and a background.

Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive 1∕r interaction: The case of self-trapping

I. Papadopoulos, P. Wagner, G. Wunner +1 more

Amplifying on a proposal by O'Dell et al. for the realization of Bose-Einstein condensates of neutral atoms with attractive $1∕r$ interaction, we point out that the instance of self-trapping of the condensate, without an external trap potential, is physically best understood by introducing appropriate ``atomic'' units. This reveals a remarkable scaling property: the physics of the condensate depends only on the two parameters ${N}^{2}a∕{a}_{u}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}∕{N}^{2}$, where $N$ is the particle number, $a$ the scattering length, ${a}_{u}$ the ``Bohr'' radius, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ the trap frequency in atomic units. We calculate accurate numerical results for self-trapping wave functions and potentials, and for energies, sizes, and peak densities, and compare with previous variational results. We point out the existence of a second solution of the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation for negative scattering lengths, with and without trapping potential, which is born together with the ground state in a tangent bifurcation. This indicates the existence of an unstable collectively excited state of the condensate for negative scattering lengths.

Atomic soliton reservoir: How to increase the critical atom number in negative-scattering-length Bose-Einstein gases

Humberto Michinel, Víctor M. Pérez‐García, Raúl de la Fuente

We study the stabilization of a large negative scattering length Bose-Einstein condensate by using a multisoliton fringe system. Each fringe behaves like a quasiparticle and the whole cloud forms a stable system when the trapping in one or two directions is switched off. The resulting system can be used as a coherent source of atomic solitons. A discussion on how to generate the soliton fringe system experimentally is made.
