Mixed-State Entanglement and Distillation: Is there a “Bound” Entanglement in Nature?

Abstract

It is shown that if a mixed state can be distilled to the singlet form it must violate partial transposition criterion [A. Peres, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1413 (1996)]. It implies that there are two qualitatively different types of entanglement: ``free'' entanglement which is distillable, and ``bound'' entanglement which cannot be brought to the singlet form useful for quantum communication purposes. A possible physical meaning of the result is discussed.

Bound Entanglement Can Be Activated

Paweł Horodecki, Michał Horodecki, Ryszard Horodecki

Bound entanglement is the noisy entanglement which cannot be distilled to a singlet form. Thus it cannot be used alone for quantum communication purposes. Here we show that, nevertheless, the bound entanglement can be, in a sense, pumped into a single pair of free entangled particles. It allows for teleportation via the pair with the fidelity impossible to achieve without support of bound entanglement.

Distillability, Bell Inequalities, and Multiparticle Bound Entanglement

Antonio Acín

We study the relation between violation of Bell inequalities and distillability properties of quantum states. Recently, Dür [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 230402 (2001)] has shown that there are some multiparticle bound entangled states which are nonseparable and nondistillable, that violate a Bell inequality. We prove that for all the states violating this inequality there exists at least one splitting of the parties into two groups such that some pure-state entanglement can be distilled, obtaining a connection between Bell inequalities and bipartite distillable entanglement.

Irreversibility in asymptotic manipulations of a distillable entangled state

Guifré Vidal, J. I. Cirac

We provide an example of a distillable bipartite mixed state such that, even in the asymptotic limit, more pure-state entanglement is required to create it than can be distilled from it. Thus, we show that the irreversibility in the processes of formation and distillation of bipartite states, recently proved in [G. Vidal and J. I. Cirac, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5803 (2001)], is not limited to bound-entangled states.

Experimental Entanglement Distillation of Two-Qubit Mixed States under Local Operations

Zhiwei Wang, Xiang-Fa Zhou, Yun‐Feng Huang +3 more

We experimentally demonstrate optimal entanglement distillation from two forms of two-qubit mixed states under local filtering operations according to the constructive method introduced by [F. Verstraete, Phys. Rev. A 64, 010101(R) (2001)10.1103/PhysRevA.64.010101]. In principle, our setup can be easily applied to distilling entanglement from arbitrary two-qubit partially mixed states. We also test the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shinmony-Holt inequality for the distilled state from the first form of mixed state to show its "hidden nonlocality."

Bound Entangled States With Negative Partial Transpose Exist

Indrani Chattopadhyay, D. Sarkar

We prove the existence of bound entangled states with negative partial transpose (NPT) in any d × d(d ≥ 3) Hilbert space with a simple assumption on Schmidt rank two states. Obviously they belong to the class of conjectured to be bound entangled states by Divincenzo et.al [Phys. Rev. A, 61, 062312(2000)] and by Dür et.al [Phys. Rev. A, 61, 062313(2000)]. PACS number(s): 03.67.Hk, 03.65.Ud. The basic issue on the classification of mixed state entanglement at least on the level of bipartite systems solely depends upon whether there exist bound entangled states or not. The existence of PPT-bound (PPT means positive partial transpose) entangled states [1] and also the existence of NPT N−copy undistillable states [2, 3] for every positive integer N naturally indicates there may exist NPT-bound entangled states. In this work we are able to show the existence of NPT-bound entangled states with a simple assumption on Schmidt rank two states. We first briefly describe the issue and the importance of the problem. In recent years it is found that quantum entanglement is an useful resource in performing several tasks in quantum information theory and quantum communication [4]. Maximally entangled states shared between two parties are essential ingredients in this respect [5]. Now due to the interaction with environment, states are in practice found to be mixed. However there is a process called distillation by which we can distill sometimes maximally entangled

Bound entanglement and local realism

Dagomir Kaszlikowski, Marek Żukowski, P. Gnaciński

We show using a numerical approach, which gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of local realism, that the bound entangled state presented in Bennett et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 5385 (1999)] admits a local and realistic description. We also find the lowest possible amount of some appropriate entangled state that must be ad-mixed to the bound entangled state so that the resulting density operator has no local and realistic description and as such can be useful in quantum communication and quantum computation.
