Abstract

The interaction of a trapped ion with a laser beam in the strong-excitation regime is analyzed. In this regime, a variety of nonclassical states of motion can be prepared either by using laser pulses of well defined area, or by an adiabatic passage scheme based on the variation of the laser frequency. We show how these states can be used to investigate fundamental properties of quantum mechanics. We also study possible applications of this system to build an ion interferometer. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

A scheme for the preparation of nonclassical states of motion in a three-dimensional harmonic ion trap is proposed. The technique is based on adiabatic passage along dressed energy levels of the strongly coupled ion-trap system by varying the laser frequency.

Quantum motion of trapped ions

R. Blatt, J. I. Cirac, A. S. Parkins +1 more

A single ion trapped in a harmonic potential and laser cooled at the node of a standing wave can be described in terms of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian known in quantum optics. Similar to nonclassical states of light we propose to prepare nonclassical states of the ion motion in a harmonic trap. In particular, several schemes for the preparation of Fock states are presented, and techniques for the preparation of squeezed states and coherent states of the ion motion are indicated. For an observation of these nonclassical states we propose to measure quantum collapse and revival in the population inversion of a single trapped ion.

Zhongjie Wang

A method to prepare nonclassical states of the motion of a trapped ion that interacts with a traveling wave light field has been proposed, which is based on modulation of the frequency of the traveling wave field. In the end, an experiment configuration about its preparation is proposed and discussed.

Preparation of nonclassical states and measurement of the Wigner function for the collective motion of N trapped ions

Zheng Shi-Biao

We propose a scheme for generating nonclassical states for the centre-of-mass vibrational mode of N trapped ions, including superpositions of several coherent states on a circle and Fock states. In the scheme N trapped ions are driven by a laser beam tuned to the carrier. The scheme also provides a new prospect for laser cooling. The scheme can be used to measure the Wigner function of the collective vibrational mode.

Nonclassical Features Interchange Between the Cavity Field and Quantized Trap

Zeng Heping, LIN FU-CHENG

A novel recipe is proposed to generate nonclassical vibrational states of the center-of-mass motions of ions in a quantized trap, based on the quantum conversion between the quantum cavity fields and the quantized trap. It is shown that, when an ion trap system interacts with the eigen mode of a single-mode Fabry-Pérot cavity where the trap was set in, and a particularly selected external laser pulse through Raman transitions, the interchange of the quantum features between the quantum light states and the quantized trap states occurs. This kind of quantum conversion can be used to prepare some nonclassical trap states in an ion trap as well as to measure the properties of initial nonclassical vibrational states.

Quantum chaos of an ion trapped in a linear ion trap

G. P. Berman, Daniel F. V. James, D. I. Kamenev

We describe the transition to quantum chaos of an ion trapped in a linear ion trap and interacting with two laser fields. Under the conditions of adiabatic illumination of the upper level of the ion, and when the frequencies of the two laser beams are slightly different, the system is reduced to a quantum linear oscillator interacting with a monochromatic wave. The property of localization over the quantum resonance cells is proposed to exploit in order to facilitate the process of measurement of the probability distribution of an ion on the vibrational levels. In the regime of strong chaos the time-averaged values of the energy and dispersion of energy are computed and compared with the corresponding classical quantities for different values of the perturbation amplitude. In the exact resonance case, the classical analog of the system possesses an infinite inhomogeneous stochastic web. We analyze the quantum dynamics inside the inhomogeneous web. It is shown that the quantum system mimics on average the dynamics of the corresponding classical system. Formation of the quantum resonance cells is illustrated in the case of a finite detuning from the exact resonance, and under increasing of the wave amplitude. The parameters of the model and the initial conditions are close to the real physical situation which can be realized in the system of cold trapped ion perturbed by two lasers fields with close frequencies.
