van der Waals interactions in a magnetodielectric medium

Abstract

The van der Waals interaction between two ground-state atoms is calculated for two electrically or magnetically polarizable particles embedded in a dispersive magnetodielectric medium. Unlike previous calculations which infer the atom-atom interaction from the dilute-medium limit of the macroscopic, many-body van der Waals interaction, the interaction is calculated directly for the system of two atoms in a magnetodielectric medium. Two approaches are presented, the first based on the quantized electromagnetic field in a dispersive medium without absorption and the second on Green functions that allow for absorption. We show that the correct van der Waals interactions are obtained regardless of whether absorption in the host medium is explicitly taken into account.

Body-assisted van der Waals interaction between two atoms

Hassan Safari, Stefan Yoshi Buhmann, Dirk‐Gunnar Welsch +1 more

Using fourth-order perturbation theory, a general formula for the van der Waals potential of two neutral, unpolarized, ground-state atoms in the presence of an arbitrary arrangement of dispersing and absorbing magnetodielectric bodies is derived. The theory is applied to two atoms in bulk material and in front of a planar multilayer system, with special emphasis on the cases of a perfectly reflecting plate and a semi-infinite half space. It is demonstrated that the enhancement and reduction of the two-atom interaction due to the presence of a perfectly reflecting plate can be understood, at least in the nonretarded limit, by using the method of image charges. For the semi-infinite half space, both analytical and numerical results are presented.

van der Waals interactions between excited atoms in generic environments

Pablo Barcellona, Roberto Passante, Lucia Rizzuto +1 more

We consider the van der Waals force involving excited atoms in general environments, constituted by magnetodielectric bodies. We develop a dynamical approach studying the dynamics of the atoms and the field, mutually coupled. When only one atom is excited, our dynamical theory suggests that for large distances the van der Waals force acting on the ground-state atom is monotonic, while the force acting in the excited atom is spatially oscillating. We show how this latter force can be related to the known oscillating Casimir-Polder force on an excited atom near a (ground-state) body. Our force also reveals a population-induced dynamics: for times much larger that the atomic lifetime the atoms will decay to their ground states leading to the van der Waals interaction between ground-state atoms.

Field Quantization and Radiative Processes in Dispersive Dielectric Media

Peter W. Milonni

The electromagnetic field in a dispersive dielectric medium is quantized in a straightforward manner based on the classical expression for the field energy away from absorption resonances. Results for spontaneous and stimulated radiative rates, and absorption and gain coefficients, are obtained and compared with other expressions in the literature. Local field corrections, when they exist, are included. A level shift for an atom in a host dielectric medium is obtained and interpreted as the van der Waals interaction between that atom and its neighbours in the host medium.

van der Waals interactions between excited-state atoms and dispersive dielectric surfaces

M. Fichet, F. Schuller, Daniel Bloch +1 more

van der Waals interactions between atoms and dielectric surfaces are reinvestigated. To describe the nonretarded interaction potential between a dispersive dielectric surface and an atom in an arbitrary internal energy state, we derive a general expression in terms of an integral, over real frequency, of the combined atom and surface polarizabilities. It is shown that, for excited atoms, the expression is equivalent to the one obtained by Wylie and Sipe [Phys. Rev. A 32, 2030 (1985)]. We thus demonstrate how to extend this approach to excited atoms interacting with birefringent dielectrics. For isotropic dielectrics, a method of integration in closed form allows us to derive an approximate formula for the van der Waals interaction constant in terms of resonance frequencies and oscillator strengths of both the atom and the dielectric. Frequency-dependent ``dielectric reflection'' coefficients are introduced for virtual atomic dipole couplings either in absorption or in emission. In absorption, the reflection coefficient is always positive and smaller than unity. In emission, it may take arbitrary values, positive or negative (corresponding to van der Waals repulsion). Such a behavior is shown to be related to resonant excitation exchange between the atomic system and the dielectric medium, when an atomic transition frequency gets in resonance with a dielectric absorption band. Numerical calculations performed for the cesium-sapphire system are shown to be in good agreement with data obtained by selective-reflection spectroscopy. Finally, experimental tests of the birefringent character of the sapphire response are discussed.

The van der Waals energy of atomic systems near absorbing and dispersing bodies

Stefan Yoshi Buhmann, Ho Trung Dung, D.‐G. Welsch

Within the frame of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in causal media, a rigorous derivation of the van der Waals energy of an atomic system in the presence of an arbitrary arrangement of dispersing and absorbing dielectric bodies is given. As an application, the van der Waals potential of an atom in the presence of a dispersing and absorbing sphere is derived. Closed expressions for the long-distance (retardation) and short-distance (non-retardation) limits are given, and the effect of material absorption is discussed.

Electromagnetic field quantization in a magnetodielectric medium with external charges

Majid Amooshahi, Fardin Kheirandish

The electromagnetic field inside a cubic cavity filled with a linear magnetodielectric medium and in the presence of external charges is quantized by modeling the magnetodielectric medium with two independent quantum fields. The electric and magnetic polarization densities of the medium are defined in terms of the ladder operators of the medium and eigenmodes of the cavity. The Maxwell and constitutive equations of the medium together with the equation of motion of the charged particles have been obtained from the Heisenberg equations using a minimal coupling scheme. The spontaneous emission of a two-level atom embedded in a magnetodielectric medium is calculated in terms of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities of the medium and the Green function of the cubic cavity, as an application of the model.
