Towards high-fidelity interference of photons emitted by two remotely trapped Rb-87 atoms

We investigate the requirements for achieving high-fidelity interference of photon pairs emitted by two independently trapped Rb-87 atoms at remote locations. For this purpose, one has to ensure indistin-guishability of the single photon wave packets. The crucial parameters here are the synchronization of the two setups, the frequency matching of the photons, as well as their spatial mode overlap. We show that in our experiment these parameters can be controlled to a high degree. This is a first step towards entangling two trapped atoms over a large distance.

Quantum interference from remotely trapped ions

We observe quantum interference of photons emitted by two continuously laser-excited single ions, independently trapped in distinct vacuum vessels. High contrast two-photon interference is observed in two experiments with different ion species, Ca + and Ba + . Our experimental findings are quantitatively reproduced by Bloch equation calculations. In particular, we show that the coherence of the individual resonance fluorescence light field is determined from the observed interference.

Controlling the interference of single photons emitted by independent atomic sources

Alessandro Ceré, Victor Leong, Sandoko Kosen +3 more

Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between independent sources is a fundamental primitive of many quantum communication and computation protocols. We present a study of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference of single photons generated via two different physical processes by two independent atomic systems: scattering by a single atom, and parametric generation via four-wave mixing in a cloud of cold atoms. By controlling the coherence time and central frequency of the heralded single photons generated by four-wave mixing we observe quantum beat and a varying degree of interference.
